Smithing confirmed as a skill?

Post » Thu Oct 14, 2010 3:10 pm

You have all probably read http://bethblog.com/index.php/2011/02/18/ladies-and-gentlemen-start-your-creation-engines/ article. We all know Conception isn't a real skill, but look at the extreme right, there's a skill that starts with 'Smith' and at the extreme left, one that ends with 'aft'. Sorry if this has already been pointed out, used search engine and nothing came up.

Is it a skill? I was under the impression it was just a sort of past-time, similar to woodcutting. Suppose it'd be almost identical to the 'Armourer' skill from previous games.

Seeing as there's a skill for it, I'd say yes, it is a skill, my guess is that "smithing" will cover both making weapons and armor and the funtion of armorer in past games.

Myself, I think the picture linked tomore or less answers the question, and I've actually used it as evidence that smithing is indeed a skill before, albeit the unedited version that shows destruction rather than conception.

And I'm guessing the skill that ends in "aft" is "speechcraft".

Back on topic, smithing will probably be a combo of armorer and making new weapons.

Yes. From the Game Informer podcast where they interviewed Todd Howard:

12:55 Are you going to be able to craft spells, potions, and other items?

"We do have crafting within each discipline now. We do have smithing, enchanting is back as a skill, and then alchemy we're sort of treating as - it doesn't matter that much anymore (stealth/magic/combat categories) - but it's sort of in our stealth category now. We have a blended skill list, so alchemy is sort of the most magical of the stealth skills. And then we have lots of other things that are NOT skill based that you can craft, like cooking and things like that."

It's been confirmed a skill, and I have a hard time believe you didn't find any results on this via the search engine considering this thread is made pretty much daily, and I just found 3 using the search engine.
