Smithing heavy or light armor?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:36 pm

So what side do I need to go? Go make light(glass) armors or go for heavy armors(dwarven) if I wear light armor myself. What is fastest or what route is better to go?

Are you for real? If you wear light armor, then you should probably go up the light armor tree silly.

Light glass... Lighter and easier to navigate and quicker attack speed with the Mace.... I'm working with my Mace skills at the moment. Heavy armors will make you more like a tank... IMO

Technically speaking, from a metagame point of view, its better to go the heavy armour route with smithing in all cases.

If you actually wear light armour, you still get dragonscale (the best) from the top perk in smithing. But you maintain access to daedric weaponsmithing.

Only issue I have heard is there is a weapon (Chillrend) that has a pretty good damage output (rivaling a Daedric sword), but uses glass for the purposes of upgrading.

agreed, but both have their perks and disadvantages. also depending on your class either or would be a smarter choice.

Well I was just asking because it might be quicker leveling while making heavy armor/ more rewardable/ you can just go heavy armor because you will find enough good light armor in the game.

That's why I asked it in the first place.

Since all smithing levels at the same rate, its "quickest" to craft iron daggers. Don't do this constantly though, its a bad idea.

Once again though, given that the best light armour can be crafted by going the light or heavy route, but the best weapons can only be gained by going the heavy route, it is technically superior to go the heavy route.

You won't get to upgrade your armour as you level it, but once you get to the top you win.

I agree, I will probably go that way. Though I'm a mage and won't use weapons that much :whistling:

Assuming you dedicate and perk into it, the stuff you make will be stronger than the stuff you can find in-game. I personally find that a little weird, but there you go.

I wear light armor but went up the heavy armor side of the smithing tree. Mostly because I wanted the daedric weapons. I'm wearing the DB armor with the nightingale mask. Plan to keep it that way, if I do switch maybe I'll switch to heavy armor.

No go the right side of the tree to get daedric (for the weapons) then dragon (for the light armor).

You can't only think about the end game, most of the time playing will be in the middle, and you would be better served during the middle part to take light armor smithing.

Besides, with the way armor work legendary glass weapons are almost as good as legendary deadric weapons anyway.

If you're focused on getting the best gear, go heavy. You'll still be able to get the best light armor (Dragonscale), and you'll also be able to upgrade Daedric gear.

the op asked specifically for a mage so weapons don't matter. My mage is taking the light armor route and doing really fine. I'm just above 70 but glass armor looks really awesome + heavy armor looks evil and my charakter is a good one.

I'm a mage and I'm going the light armor route too. Also I like using a summoned bow and I like the speed and stamina regeneration of light armor. There is no wrong way to do it though.

Are you sure? I looked at the wiki and it seemed glass weapons are superior in base damage to daedric in some cases. The wiki, of course, could be wrong.

Just checked, Daedric is still the highest.

But you're a Mage!!! You need some robes (hood, ring, and amulet too!) with boosted Magicka regeneration, and you should be double-casting Ironflesh, and using Greater Ward.

Well, I tried that route..and I can say I still die in 1/2 hits...With light armor so far my survivability has been much greater.

I have my mage/bow guy wearing dragonscale and his armor value is 499 right now. Can't sneeze at that.

What is the highest you can get with Ironflesh?
