Smithing light armor is pointless?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 7:40 pm

Let me just start of buy saying that being able to smith dragon armor is the end goal when it comes to smithing.

we also know that daedric weapons are the strongest craftable weapons as well.

Now, my point is, why in the bloody hell cant i go from making dragon armor down to daedric armor when both points connect? im at 100 smith skill yet i have to start off again at the bottom and go through dwarven orc and ebony just to get to daedric, just because i decided to make.

If you dont understand go take a look at the smithing tree in-game, you cant go from dragon down to glass or dragon down to daedric, even though your skill is beyond the requirement and the paths connect.

WTF, this makes one side of the whole smithing tree useless as the further in the game you get the more useless those previous armor and weapons become.. i eman what, do they expect you to stick with glass weapons with dragon armor if you decide to be a light armor smith?

FYI weapons/armor you create and hone yourself are stronger than the ones you find lying around

"Useless" is a fairly extreme term. Glass weapons are still capable, especially if improved properly.

If your goal is the strongest, then yes, you should have gone with heavy armour to begin with.

Uh... it doesn't make one side useless. It makes you "pay your dues" on both sides of the light / heavy spectrum.

Light armor may not offer the highest AR of what plate does, but:

1. It's much less annoying for the majority of the game for travelling, encumberance and stamina regen. It may offer less protection, but it also depends on what kind of character you are playing.
2. If you are playing a build that uses stamina frequently, the 50% stamina regen perk is pretty good. Sure, you can just spend a bunch of time raising Restore for the heal that also returns a ton of stamina, but not everyone wants to do that.
3. Smithing + Enchanting is so brokenly overpowered that even Glass armor and weapons can be forged to be MUCH better than anything you can possibly find. Do you really need to be hitting for more than 250 per swing with a one-handed weapon? If so, then sorry...shoulda gone Daedric. :obliviongate:

ok, what if i want light armor, but a daedric weapon, that means i am forced FORCED to spec the entire tree.

why do that when you can just spec the heavy side and once you get to dragon armor, BOOOM theres your badass light armor and your daedric weapon

But perks are at enough of a premium as it is.

If Heavy Armor and Light Armor are skills that functionally do the same thing once you get THOSE perks (because of them suddenly not having weight, etc.) why not just stick to heavy armor?

Think about it like this.

As someone who wants to make light armour / weapons (that is how you spell armour, bethesda  ) you are at a disadvantage to heavy armour makers, because THEY get the option to make daedric weapons, whereas the light armour users only get to go up to glass weapons.

All they need to do is allow the person to go backwards from dragon to daedric, although not further than that.

Since the OP has obviously not seen this yet...

Gear fully Enchanted
4 X Weapon Enchants and 4 X Armor Enchants. (Note I used the +32% self made Enchanting Potion to Power the Enchants... if you don't do this, your results will be 20%ish lower)

Full Daedric Armor: 2175 Armor
Daedric Bow: 562 Damage
Daedric Dagger: 171 Damage - Too bad one handed enchants don't work for daggers... I guess sneak attacking with fully enchanted swords is better.
Daedric Two Handed Sword: 605 Damage
Daedric One Handed Sword: 518 Damage

Glass won't do quite that much, but it will be relatively close. So close that it would feel like you are playing on Novice if you have it set to Master difficulty as far as how fast enemies drop.

Going up the light side is a complete waste of perks if you go for 100 smithing, and it'd still be a waste of a perk if you could go around to grab daedric. Going light will give you better light armors early on, for a significant disadvantage once you're at the point when you can craft dragon scale and daedric or ebony both of which are superior to glass.

You guys need to actually realize the differences between light/heavy besides the AR. I don't think you understand just how incredibly long it takes for you to hit 70 in Heavy Armor, and even after it's weightless there are still perk differences. Light offers better combat/travelling perks and even though Heavy does not "slow you down" after 70, you still regen stamina quite a bit slower.

The perk tree has basically created two skills in one. Oh well.

Pretty much this is the only real answer.

Theorycrafters will always say that light armour smithing is a bad idea. And they're right, it is inefficient. However, its not a "bad" idea. There are far worse perks that you can select.

Its still quite a bit about the journey, not the destination. Getting 70 heavy armour is still time consuming, or costly. While some are willing to play the grind game, many are also just looking forward to playing Skyrim. Light armour provides an excellent source of exceedingly lightweight gear.

omfg i am not debating about being a heavy armor class or a light armor class, im specially talking about what a [censored] waste of perks it is to go on the light armor side of smithing vs the heavy side, THE END RESULTS STILL ALLOW YOU TO CREATE LIGHT OR HEAVY DRAGON ARMOR so y the [censored] would i spend points for the lgith armor side even if im a light armor guy when taking the right side will still give me the SAME results WITH daedric weapons WITH a few extra saved perks to spend elsewear

i dont give 2 [censored] about the differences between light armor classes vs heavy when the smithing tree is obviously biased.

I'm just going to get every Smithing perk. It's my role-play. It's my characters "Job" so to speak. Gameplay wise I may just need to go up the heavy side to be economic with my Perks. Being honest I don't really need to go far up. I'm happy with a Steel Axe and Leather Armour so far. I can see myself using buffed Orcish weapons, and Enchanted Leather Armour at endgame just because that's my style. I still want to be able to forge Dragon and Daedric kit (and Glass come to that).

I say, just go for whatever suits you. If you really want those Light Perks then accept the hit of going up the other side to get Daedric. If you'll just end up using Dragonscale/Plate then just go up Heavy. If you don't care about Daedric then just go up Light.

(that is how you spell armour, bethesda  )

You are correct and wrong at the same time.
Most words ending in an unstressed -our in British English (e.g. colour, flavour, honour, neighbour, rumour, labour, humour) end in -or in American English (cf. color, flavor, honor, neighbor, rumor, labor, humor). Wherever the vowel is unreduced in pronunciation, this does not occur: e.g. contour, velour, paramour and troubadour are spelled thus the same everywhere.

This isn't an MMO, the chances of this getting fixed in a patch are slim to nil. Just bite the bullet like I did and dump the 5 perks in the heavy armor line..

edit: They censored f-a-n-b-o-y-s... wow.

yeah thats the thing, i already dumped my points into the light armor side, got the dragon armor, and was surprised to see that there wasnt ANY dragon weapons...or that i was unable to go down to daedric.

so [censored] it, im restarting the game over, i WAS lvl 44 but i dont like wasting points

Wait, the best weapon/armors in game are crafted? That's kind of lame, makes exploring dungeons and stuff less fun when you make your stuff.

Who the [censored] would take smithing/enchanting if it didn't make the best stuff in the game?

Im on pc so I just use the addperk command for smithing. Is it cheating? Maybe but I spent $60 so ill do what I want! Of course im not just adding all the perks as I don't like to make it to easy on myself but its an option if I want to use it.

For reference, understand that I did go "full circle" on Smithing, with a light armour main, with daedric weapons. I actually bit the bullet on the matter long before getting to 100 smithing though, choosing to buy all perks as I went so as to make better use of looted ores.

Still, once again, yes, it hurts. It is inefficient. But that's OK, it doesn't need to be balanced. The actual differences between glass weaponry and daedric weaponry are minimized when cheesing it out with alchemy/enchanting and the proper smithing improvements. Oh no, you now 2 shot mammoths instead of one shotting them.

I've decided to use light armor so this pissed me off too.

Then I looked over this thread
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1289727-2419-armor-6399-damage-using-smithing-alchemy-enchanting-only-33-perks-329k-backstabs-post-4/page__p__19446969__hl__perks__fromsearch__1#entry19446969

It shows how damage possibilities scale when you add max smithing and enchanting benefits. I did a little math and it turns out that "optimally smithed" glass weapons are not even 6% weaker than optimally smithed daedric weapons.

This is because an optimally smithed weapon's base damage is MUCH more heavily influenced by smithing skill (boosted by enchanting) than it is by the weapon type. In fact, the base damage of an optimally smithed weapon is about 7% attributable to weapon type and 93% to smithing skill. Weapon type essentially doesn't matter. This is true even if you don't abuse exploits with alchemy.

I am now significantly less pissed off

That's incredibly silly, unless you're utterly addicted to wielding super-min/max-power weapons. I've gone up the Light Armor side. I haven't gone nuts with the Smith-Enchant-Alchemy thing - to smith my top gear, I've just used a couple +Smith armors I found and a +Smith potion I found. Legendary Glass sword? Pretty good. Legendary Dawnbreaker? Pretty good, too (~96 dmg). Legendary Daedric sword (found it in a box) - yeah, I don't get "double" improvement, but I still ended up with Legendary, 103 damage. And those swords let me kill stuff quite nicely.

The 500+ damage crap you see people talking about is only if you go nuts with recursive crafting bonuses. Unless that's what you're after, there's no need to re-roll at level 44. (Honestly, you don't need to powergame that hard to succeed in this game. Finish out your play of this character, then try the heavy armor side with your next build.)
