Smithing Perk Tree

Post » Thu Sep 15, 2011 11:06 pm

So I have a complaint.

The smithing perks are listed below. Can anyone guess at why you'd ever want to "specialize" at smithing, by choosing all smithing perks? It seems to me that you'd just want to pick one or two armor types, plus arcane blacksmith, and then be done with this particular perk tree. I am a little bit disappointed in the amount of variety we have in the smithing perk. It seems like there could be a bazillion other options - lower encumbrance, damage reflection, magic resistance, combo magic, etc...

Thoughts?

Also, I tried complaining about this in another topic, but no one seemed to care. Meh.

Smithing perks:

Steel Smithing Create Steel armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Arcane Blacksmith Improve magical weapons and armor.
Dwarven Smithing Create Dwarven armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Elven Smithing Create Elven armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Orcish Smithing Create Orcish armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Advanced Armors Create scaled and plate armor at forges. Improve by double.
Glass Smithing Create glass armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Daedric Smithing Create Daedric armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Ebony Smithing Create Ebony armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Dragon Smithing Create Dragon armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double

Just "lower encumbrance" would be a "Smithing Factor", the others: "damage reflection, magic resistance, combo magic, etc... " are all covered by Enchantment.

And the Smithing Skill description says: "...create new Weapons and Armor with Raw Materials, or improve Armors and Weapons".

And2 we don't know exactly what "Advanced Armors Create scaled and plate armor at forges. Improve by double." will cover. Maybe it's some kind of customization/upgrade from "normal" Armor. For example...
1 - I have a Iron Armor
2 - I use my "Advanced Armor Perk" at the Smithing Station.
3 - Now it's a Scaled Iron Armor.
4 - ????
5 - Profit.

Pretty boring it is true. The low level ones may be prerequisites for the later ones, I really don't know.

Well... You cant pick any perk right out of the gate. Its a tree that you have to follow. Also, many of the effects you describe come with enchanting. Lower encumbrance? Add feather effects. Damage reflection? Shield. I could go on but meh. The point with smithing is to create new weapons and armor and to improve your stuff by DOUBLE what anyone else can do. So that armor youre wearing? You can improve way past normal threshold, but only with the right perks.

It's in a "Tree" format, so probably (IMO) there will be two branches: Light Armor and Heavy Armor (And a "Inter-Branch" between the two for the "Advanced Armors")

Plus, it's a lot cheaper to make your own armor and you may end up with higher quality armor than you'll ever find.

Hey now! Where this come from? I guess I missed something.

Sweet Arcane blacksmith! That's exactly what I wanted to see.
I wish they specialized weapons and armors though. Would of gave more variety and I really only cared for the weapon aspect.
Looking at those perks all I need is Steel and Arcane; well at least that leaves more perks to dump into illusion.

You can't just go jumping ahead in the perk tree, to get the best perk you have to pick the others first.

I still wonder if it is worth taking, since you can find all the gear as well. But who knows.

It seems that you are mixing "Enchanting" and "Smithing" in your argument.

Arcane Blacksmithing sounds like it's Lv. 50 Blacksmithing from Oblivion, allowing repairs (buffs now) to enchanted armor/weapons.

Advanced Armor sounds like we'll have 4 tiers available for wider armor variations. (2 for Light Armor, 2 for Heavy)

You have to pick the lower ones before the higher ones. And I for one will be choosing it. And after my first character I will use ArtMoney to change data values so I can pick every perk...

I have the sneaky suspicion that you can only SMITH dragonbone armor. Kill dragon. Get bones. Make armor. I find it highly unlikely that some random shopkeep would have access to dragon bones... Just sayin

I find it highly unlikely that only the PC can kill dragons, and that dragons are immortal to NPCs.... Just Saying.

He's not the only one. But making your own will probably be much cheaper than buying one. (And selling it would cause much profit)

Ummm... Have you seen the dragons? He made a GIANT his (censored), then practically ate the guard. If a giant gets owned, I seriously doubt the other npc's will fare better. Also, the only reason that the PC doesn't get owned is for some reason the dragon can't just fling him all over the place til he's dead.

Oh and the entire POINT is that as Dohvakin you are the ONLY person who can fight back against the dragon scourge.

I hate to be a "told you so" guy, but I feared things like that would happen. People will be really disappointed by perks because they don't live up to their expectations.
Perks offer next to nothing to specialize your character, they only cut your skillprogression into incremental steps.

Exactly, we don't know what improvements you can do on armor and weapons.

By the Pickpocket and Smithing perks I would say that...

For example, your Smithing Skills tells you how good you is at Smithing. While your Smithing Perks tells you what you can do with that "High Smithing Skill"
The same applies to Pickpocket, I can be a good "Pickpocketer" by having a high Pickpocket Skill. But just the Pickpocket Perks will tell me what I can do with all that skill.

It's "specialization" in a sense; I can be skilled in Swimming (High Swim Skill) and not know how to swim backwards (A Swim Perk).

I agree that this is certainly the case in the smithing tree, but the pickpocket tree IMO looks rather appealing. Im not even making a stealth character but there are pickpocket perks that i think i might choose for my battlemage (e.g extra pockets which gives you 100 extra encumbrance) :)

Also, excuse my noobiness, but what does "improve by double" mean?

Arcane Blacksmith Improve magical weapons and armor.

Ebony Smithing Create Ebony armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double.
Dragon Smithing Create Dragon armor and weapons at forges. Improve by double

Um you dont tend to pick all the perks in any skill certainly you dont pick all the two handed weapons perks nor do you pick all the destruction perks. I expct you will be going for eaither heavy or light armor msmithing perks with the resultant weapon making abilties thrown in too.. I expect arcane stuff advanced armor are a third branch or an offshoot of light or heavy armors making.
