Smithing...

Post » Tue Sep 21, 2010 4:01 am

When I heard blacksmithing was in the game I got excited, but then I thought, it might be nearly identical to the smiths of Bliss/Crucible...
I hope we have to actually forge the items, shaping them as far as our practice, amount of ore, and imagination allow us...

what do you hope and what do you expect?

EDIT (To clarify my idea better): (I don't know that much about smithing) First you melt the ore, then you take it out of your "oven" (forgot what those things are called) *If you use your hands to remove the ore (and are not Dunmer) they will melt off* then you shape your pile of halfmelted ore by hitting it with hammers and cut in symbols with a knife (or something)... but be cautious, the damage your blade will deal will be determined by its sharpness while the damage of your hammer will be the weight of its head... and if you make your blades to thin they might crack, leaving you with a smaller weapon or a choice to start over... it would also be cool if you could melt already existing weapons back into ore... (this idea is mostlikely not going to happen but it would be cool as hell if it did...)

I doubt it will be anything like an in-game Construction Set for weapons and armor. More likely, it will be something similar to the Bliss and Crucible smiths but for all types of armor in the game. If we're lucky, we might be able to mix and match certain aspects of other armors together and make some really cool looking stuff.

Regardless, it sounds like a great idea and I'm excited for it, even if it isn't super-impressive.

Well, I like the idea of all the random jobs and stuff you can do---this time they really have animations for it all I think, so that's good.

That said, I dont expect it to be much more than a menu for combining elements and choosing armor/weapon style--then you see the animation of it.

I hope the smithing isn't limited to a few types of armour/weapons, but that we can forge (almost) any type there is. Rarer types would require more skill and the recources for it would be harder to find.

Well... not what I'm hoping for (thats total costumation, in other words: Sculpting) but its better than what I expect (Shivering isles style, were there is ore in every dungeon)...

Can't believe someones even less optimistic than me, but on the other hand... the left one... I would rather want smithing cancelled than Shivering isles style.

Yes, first option, with an ability to customize to a certain extent.

Edit: I put further explanation in this other thread. Now try to think of the image of the typical goggled Spangen type viking helmet. Imagine you could gild the eyeguard and ridge to the back, add eyebrows and a duck's beak on the noseguard. Now that would be a helmet do die for.

I hope it will be part of a quest for Daedric armor. You would have to collect enough raw Ebony to forge each piece(Bring back the different grades of equipment) The item would have to be fine or better.Find and capture a suitable Daedric soul.Enchant said piece with said soul and voila.

What I expect is it will be similar to the campfire model in FONV and used to create and or improve wpns and armor.Use silver ore to add the ability to hit undead to an iron wpn.

Since it uses the same engine, I imagine it would be just like it was in New Vegas.

It is not using the same engine. There's going to be a whole new engine for Skyrim.

They're not using Gamebryo anymore? I missed that, my bad.

i feel like it would be hard to cut every individual piece of our armor, but if bethesda can figure out a way to let us completely create our own armor and maybe have some templates that would be awesome

I hope that it will be some sort of involving method, where you actually have to do something, and there's some animation to it.

I expect something like......... click on anvil, which will open up a menu. Select materials, select style of weapon (short sword, long sword, et al) click on Create. Boom, sword.

I would love to see the return of ebony mines (and other mines even!), where you find ore that you can use to smelt into weapons. I would like to see the system fleshed out, and allow for deep customization if possible. Remember how they said they are adding decals? It would be nice to see the ability to put some kind of "decal" or decorative variation on weapons and armor. That is what I would love to see, further customization.

If anyones played runescape i hope its something like that, maybe not the mining part but melting the ore and then creating armor/weapons would be very neat.

I'd like to create our weapons as uniquely as possible. I doubt we will get option 1, but option 3 doesn't warrant a skill.

I'd like there to be a variety of weapon styles, a large variety.
Then each of these styles can be forged in each material. Harder weapon styles require higher levels, rarer materials would also require higher levels.
If we could have options for more customization, that would be awesome.

I'd settle for this, I of course would love more.

i like the proper gothic games smithing but even more in-depth.
You get ore you then forge the ore (many different kinds) into blanks, hilts, pommels, etc.
Then forge these together how you want with magical effects, and the same sought of thing for armour.

I forget to mention that I hope to see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fletching in the game, since I favor a bow and arrow dominate warrior. I would be over joyed to hear them say they are adding something like this to their craft and smithing skills.

I'm not particularly interested in being able to craft my own armor/weapons
I'm only interested in the end product. If the game has many good looking gears, there's no reason for me to ever do any smithing.
Altering the appearance of armor/weapon would be nice, just in case the best gears happen to be ugly or I find some weak low-lv gear that I like.

Bethesda has to be the laziest corporation I know when it comes to animation. Probably because there always trying to keep the fps low but still you will probably only get a shivering isles type deal across the board. The thing is people don't really fight hard enough for more realistic animation and such. I have had thread after thread for it but it always get's shot down by the mod community. They would crap a brick if it ever had the amount of animation that fable has lol
