Smithsonian "Art of Video Games" Exhibit

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:06 am

The Smithsonian American Art Museum revealed the winners of its public vote to decide what games will be featured in their exhibit, The Art of Video Games, today. The exhibit creates a visual history of the evolution of gaming from its humble beginnings through the present. The vote, which took place between February and April, helped to pick the majority of the exhibit, with only a few iconic selections guaranteed entry.

I was expecting to see Crysis in that list, but I'm pretty happy to see Portal, Fallout 3, Halo 2, and Brutal Legend in there. I love those games.

Well, at least they put Fallout 1 on the list, but why Fallout 3? Just dungeon crawling garbage.

There's a distinct lack of adventure games in that list, such as Grim Fandango, Monkey Island series, and The Longest Journey.

Also: Fable and not Daggerfall (or even Morrowind)? Really?

This is what happens when you let random internet users choose games in 3-way matchups (and not by classical genre, either). Grim Fandango and The Secret of Monkey Island were both on the shortlist but got out-voted. It's no surprise the adventure genre got the shaft.

Morrowind, though, wasn't even in the running. I remember being struck by that one. Oblivion was, though. :meh:

I know art doesn't just include visuals, but how could they not have Mirror's Edge or Red Dead Redemption, the two most beautiful game ever created? At least BioShock made it in there. Also, that is a ridiculous number of Zeldas.

Could someone please explain precisely in what way Pac-Man is art?

Because it's not art. None of the games there are art. They have art in them (graphics, music), but the poll is essentially just another top video games of all time poll, except that it's made by a museum. As with every such poll, the results wont agree with anyone.

So my question is, WTF Smithsonian? Why do you want to [censored] with something I enjoy doing?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man

Pac-Man succeeded by creating a new genre and appealing to both genders.[12] Pac-Man is often credited with being a landmark in video game history, and is among the most famous arcade games of all time.

Yeah, Pac-Man deserves to be there.
