A while ago I brought the Decimation pack, haven't used the FY71 because well, I have skill assessments I want to complete. I haven't been able to play the new maps either but I'm happy with the retail ones so far. So I put the Smoke grenade on my levelling loadout and went into battle.
But playing with it for a while I've found it's not as impressive as I thought a Crysis 2 smoke grenade would be actually. In fact, it's almost a 'exactly what it says on the tin' description, all it does is produce smoke and that's it. Maybe I was expecting too much but I haven't had much success with the smoke grenade either offensively or defensively. It blurs your vision somewhat while in the cloud but nanovision can see right through it, even making it more effective because there's no environment to distract you from the bright glow of body heat.
It has a similar fuse type to a fragmentation grenade, pull the pin and five seconds later {PBOOTSSSSHH}, I've heard accounts that people can be blinded a la flash-grenade when the smoke goes off but not in the playthroughs I've been. At most this smoke grenade only makes it harder for snipers to see what's going on in crash sites since they can't nanovision from so far away. But the overall radius of the smoke screen is so piddily you'd have to be crouching by the grenade to have complete coverage.
It feels to me there's a few things that could make the smoke more effective. Larger radius so it can cover an entire crash site from the centre, shorter fuse time a la flash-grenade and maybe even some nanovision disrupting effects.
Better yet, who's to say the smoke grenade can't make enemy units /easier/ to see, maybe cloud could be luminescent, temporarily painting those who walk into the cloud and making them somewhat more visible even while stealthed and untagged? Would make a great idea for a new grenade type. Smoke for making it harder to see and a 'Firefly' grenade to make things easier to see?
Well my anolysis/opinion has been stated, for anybody who has seen or used the smoke grenade, what are your thoughts?
