Snackable Moments

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 11:43 am

Ok, I realize this thread is begging to be turned into a childish flamewar but I actually realized that this is something important in game design that people often forget about... Namely, if you're playing this game for 3+ hours in an evening or afternoon (ok probably more than that in November anyway but we'll just pretend we have self control) you're probably going to want to have a soda/beer and some chips or a bowl of carrots while you play (see: not unhealthy). This can easily turn into a "har har fat people thread" or "Get up and take a break then" thread so I reiterate, we ALL eat snacks and often while we play games or watch movies or socialize with friends, it's natural. I usually do while I play games, and even though bringing it up will likely get me accused of being a fat slob (I am certainly not) I would think it's an at least minor part of a game design, I work in the film industry and I know for a fact that it's a part of designing that experience. Too much intensity means people can't enjoy a snack or rest their brain a bit, which while not part of the experience of the game, is part of how THEY experience the game, and too much action/intensity is not enjoyable over a sustained period.

I find certain games tend to be ill suited for snacking while playing, requiring hands on control at all moments for anything to advance (any FPS for example), while others have lots of nice little "grab a few chips, I mean... carrots" moments. In Oblivion/morrowind I would occasionally pop walking on auto just to free my hands up for a swig of soda occasionally and during conversations you could enjoy your snack and keep having the conversation not to mention the load screen intermissions, and I'm hoping that carriages etc. will involve ways to continue playing while going hands off for a bit without missing anything. Pausing a game OF course is an option all the time, but I don't want to have to pause the game or have my character just stand in the middle of the road each time I want to take a sip of my drink. That makes the real world an impediment to your progress instead of a compliment. This is mainly a console problem as well, it's much easier to free a hand up on pc than with the console controllers.

I'm begging for flaming here, so I should clarify that I don't want the game to play itself or have lots of boring, cutscene moments and excessive load screens, I just wonder if the developers think about things like this, I know we do in the film industry. Will Skyrim have snackable moments too, or will every second be stuffed with slaying beasts and pressing buttons, leaving us the option of quitting or going hungry?

Here it comes...

Two words:

Pause Button

Cause you're not seriously expecting me to eat in real-time, right?

this is my point: pausing is annoying, it stops the gameplay altogether.

So, you want the devs to INTENTIONALLY make the game less fun and intense so you can grab a bite to eat from time to time?

I see this and do either this :banghead: or this :brokencomputer: . you can deside which...

This is a bit ridiculous lol, play an MMO if you want to be casual and snack while you play imo.

You tell it!

 This is my point: I can live with a pause or two. Your lack of patience is not everyone's problem, but only your own.

I'm sorry? It's something pretty much required when it comes to games. Like reloading saves and turning on your Xbox. Guess you'll just have to get used to it.

A developer's ultimate reward for non-pausing snackers: amusing, if not mildly offensive idle character animations.

I doubt you'll be flamed for this, no matter if people agree, so no need to keep bringing it up (of course, there's also the report button ;)).
I know I like to watch TV while I'm eating and I like to have a snack or a drink while I'm playing a game so it does annoy me a bit when I have to stare at the pause menu, even just for a couple of seconds. I actually enjoyed that I could hold a drink while watching the conversations in Dragon Age II without having to stop everything altogether. But it's definitely not an issue. There are games that have their slower moments and there are those that don't. For the latter, I simply press pause. Or don't eat. In fact, I think that's what's going to happen with Skyrim.

I tend to leave my game going and get up to grab and sandwich. That way while I'm eating, I can watch my character as the camera pans around and can also pass the time I needed to wait on anyhow for the shops to open.

You could make it really, really, really challenging and in the middle of dragon fight, run to the restroom. :lmao:

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. You're trying to be serious and talk about pacing. Yes, pacing is important.

Sit on a bench in a town while you eat. Or just stand and watch the world go by in the wilderness. If you don't wanna pause it, I doubt that you will be constantly [censored] by the wildlife and such. Just chill, kick back, and bask in Skyrim's glow. ^^

You should grow two more arms.

Problem solved. Or invent some kind of tray bib thing that holds food up to your mouth while you play. Or tell someone to stuff chips in your mouth while you play.

I got IT!

Now...one that matches a bag appearing in the game, then include one in a special "Deluxe Snacker's Edition" of the game. :D

Great for those dragon slaying all-nighters!

Sorry OP I'm just being really tongue and cheek today.

I'd go with the that one posters idea and just find a tall mountain and sightsee and let those little snack breaks be the time to plan what your going to explore.

This is what's wrong with the film industry it seems, please don't spoil my games as well...

A good script should stand on its own, not be adjusted to your snacking habits... meh, I'll just go with the feedbag already posted. A win-win situation for sure :P
