Sneak and lock picking skills shouldn't of been in game

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:59 pm

I wouldn't say it doesn't fit the character, just lack of choice. A mage could easily cast a open lock spell but there isn't one and a warrior could just bash the chest open, yet no option for that either.

I must admit, sneak is a bit insane at higher levels. I personally hate the perk system. If you are level 30, and want a level 30 perk, you still have to obtain the level 25 perk before it. For example, I did not want the sneak perk where stepping on a pressure plate no longer triggers it. I love trying to avoid stuff like that, but I was forced to take it if I wanted to get higher sneak perks. (Fortunately I'm playing on PC so I can remove it)

Also, the no longer need to be crouched perk, love hate there. There should've been a range for that, if I'm two feet behind someone, I should have to get back into a crouch, but again, love hate. It is fun sometimes to completely ninja rush someone but it makes things a bit too easy at times.

I hate it when people write should of, would of etc., instead of have -.-

On topic, there is a point to both lockpicking and sneaking. Lockpicking lets you open locked chests and whatnot, whilst sneaking lets you remain undetected.

I'll admit sneaking levels up too fast though, especially considering successful sneak attacks adds to sneak.

You're right! Most the time I do type should have but typing quick on my PS3 controller, didn't really double check what I wrote.

Lock picking is easy, even with master locks

I'll agree that this is a bit too easy. My ranger with no lockpick perks or racials and a skill of around 25ish can open master locks with some patience (no reloads...that's lame). I might break 10-15 picks, but I probably shouldn't be able to do it that easily.

I will add that I do like the Skyrim lockpick minigame soooo MUCH more than the Oblivion one.

Lockpocking is not frustrating enough! It needs to be even more frustrating! Breaking 15 lockpicks, heck no, I want to snap my whole inventory!

What are you talking about? You always have to be crouching to get in a sneak attack, or am I misunderstanding what you're referring to?

The biggest problem I have with lockpicking is the availabilty of lockpicks. Without buying them you'll drown in them soon enough, making the whole perk system for them pointless.
Then again, had they put less in and removed vendors for them people would just save and reload and still moan about it so it's a lose-lose for Bethesda on that one.

Sneak is hardly OP; I've been playing a stealth-based character and if I goof up, I might as well just reload my save.

Sure, you can one-hit kill via stealth, but this is balanced out by the fact that a competent mage or warrior will one-hit you in return if they discover your whereabouts.

I guess you haven't done the quest where you meet the wizard who got insanely rich enchanting unbreakable display cases and furniture? Sorry for the spoiler!

A little girl challenged my master thief to a game of hide and seek.

[censored] didn't know what she had just gotten herself into. I think my guy starved to death with how long he was hiding.

Wanted to say something to this, but I can't make myself respond to a post that has this in the title: "Replying to Sneak and lock picking skills shouldn't of been in game."

Like in Fallout 3, if you needed to pick a lock you needed a certain skill number before you could. Like if you tried to pick a lock it would say for master need 75 lockpick points. Or something like that.

Yeah I was kind of hoping they would have implimented this in Skryim in order to bring validity to the lockpicking skill/perk tree.

There's a perk called Silence "Walking and running does not affect detection ." I was saying how it makes sneaking even easier when you can run to an enemy undetected even if you are just feet behind him. It'd be more realistic if you can run to an enemy but at a very close range you should have to go back to crouching. I was kind of rambling though

Ahhhh. Cool. I thought I was missing some monumental effect of the perk where I didn't even have to crouch. I would have felt pretty stupid if that was the case.

As has already been stated, the different difficulties of locks should require a skill level to even attempt them. Otherwise (as has also already been stated) you can be a master thief at level 1.

They should just make it harder to pick without the appropriate level perk (adept, expert etc) but not impossible.

Which is why you shouldn't even be able to open locks unless you have the level. Just my opinion though.

yeah, do agree

I agree, it should be similar to Fallout, how you couldn't even attempt if you didnt meet the minimum requirements.

Would make all of my fortify lockpicking items with my fighter that much more valuable.

The Silence Perk is nice, but why wouldn't you go into sneak mode when you're close to your target? the sneak executions are so much cooler, And as for the lockpick system... I did enjoy fallout's style, and I agree that a limit should have been placed, but what can you do about it? Role play! it's way to easy to unlock a master lock with low skill, all you have to do is remember Happy Gilmore..."just tap it in" put a tiny but of pressure on the lockpick, until it gets closer to opening the lock :)

There is no point to them whatsoever. Lock picking is easy, even with master locks, sneaking feels cheap when you get the perks. Plus when I'm picking locks in dungeons, I really don't want it to level my character up. I honestly cannot see any reason why they added these skills in apart from just making it look like there is more choice.

You are new to the series, yes?

If you do not like sneak or lockpicking, then don't sneak or pick locks. :)

Sneak perk tree is fine (some perks being a bit op perhaps, but nothing like bs/ench/alch)

The lockpicking tree on the other hand is mostly pointless, a few decent perks awash in a sea of terrible ones, I really think the sneak/lockpicking tree should have been merged, and unarmed combat given its own tree.
