Sneaking not working!

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 1:36 am

Hey guys this is the first real bug I have ran into.

For whatever reason when I go into sneak mode NPC's instantly see me when I get them no matter how slow I move. I have every skill in the Sneaking tree maxed. I have tried sneaking with nothing on, with light armor on, heavy, nothing makes a difference. When I get in the general direction of someone it's like they instantly hear me and come running and spot me. I am not wearing any sort of sneak boost equipment, and also there is no current magic effect that is reducing my sneak ability.

Someone please help! Is there some console command or something I can do to fix this?

I've read about a stealth bug where if it goes to 100 it breaks. I can't say more than that but I'm sure others will be along to clarify the matter. I'll be watching since my Stealth skill is at 99.

Well my stealth has been at 100 for a while now. I was playing on my Xbox 360, then I took my save over to PC to continue playing on my Desktop. I NEVER had any sort of problem on my 360 with this save. I modded this save a bit with some console commands to give me all perks in every skill tree, and really just to fool around with everything. I was already level 81 on the 360 before I converted my save over to the PC. Just really confused about all this.

I bet it has something to do with me modding (unknowingly/accidentally) my sneaking skill higher then it was supposed to be. Because before this everything worked fine...

Thanks! That is sort of what I been working around with at the moment, I set my skill back to 99, then it raised up to 100 while sneaking around a NPC, so far so good. But it seems as soon as I put like Ancient Assassin's gear on they instantly can find me. Gonna test some more.

Well I set it to 99 and advanced it to 100 just by sneaking close, and it seems whichever gear I choose to wear actually works now. Very odd indeed.

Seems to be working fine =)

Honestly don't know what triggered it in the first place, but simply setting it back to 99 worked so far!

Are you able to change armor without it breaking or are you stuck with the set that you were wearing when you hit 100? Or am I mis-understanding the situation?

Okay here is exactly what I did.

I already had my char to level 81 on Xbox 360 with all the sneaking perks maxed. Never had an issue with sneaking.

Then I transferred over my save game from 360 to my pc to do a little bit of modding on my home in Windhelm, the one that usually glitches from blood on the ice quest. My home was not glitched, but I missed the option to clean up the house and was doing a workaround to clean up bits and pieces with console commands. Then I went a lil further and modded some of my perks to give me max perks in all skills with a bat file. Also did the same with shouts, and some other minor tweaks with weapons and stuff just to spice the game up.

Now here is where the problem come into play. I had already had the quest to find the Assassin of Old to get the Ancient Shrouded Armor. So I decided while I was on my PC just to go ahead and do it. Upon entering the Cavern it seemed like everything noticed me right off the bat and was attacking me while I was sneaking. I never paid much attention to this as I thought throughout the entire quest everyone was just aware of me. My quest was obviously glitched because after I got to the part to obtain the armor the handle to open the place to get it was not there at all. So I had to disable clipping and go through the wall to get the armor and complete the quest. After I got the Ancient Shrouded Armor and left I went into another bandit cavern and was noticing with my heavy dragon bone armor that NPC's could hear me move from a great distance away and come looking for me. I was easily spotted and even easier to alert them to my presence.

So I switched up to my Ancient Shrouded armor and the same occured, I then switched to nightingale and same occured, then I tried it wearing nothing at all and I still alerted them to my presence nearly instantly. It was as if I had been set to -1 Stealth or something.

*Now* After all this happened I tried set.playerav stealth 99, then I moved around an enemy and instantly went up to 100. On some occasions my sneak was still glitching. But after many loads I finally seemed to get everything back in order. I just kept setting my stealth back to 99 and letting it bump itself up to 100 and it finally began working with all sets of armor.

I have heard on occasion some people have had a glitch with their stealth after going into the Deepwood Redoubt and then coming out at Hag's End. Maybe this quest/area glitches your stealth. I have not yet had a chance to actually test this, but this seems to be the place where it all started.

Hope this extra info. helps anyone with the same problem.

Thank you for taking the time to write up your experiences in such detail. This will certainly help.

I leveled up to 100 stealth last night and everything seemed to work as expected so I'll keep an eye on it for now and use this thread as a reference if anything odd starts to occur.

Thanks again.

I was just about to start a thread about this. I've been at 100 sneak skill for awhile now with all perks except only 3/5 for the initial Stealth perk, and my sneaking was working just fine. Then I contracted Sanguinus Vampiris from a Volkihar Master Vampire in some dungeon. My sneaking seemed to work just fine for the rest of that dungeon, but after I left I decided to finish up that daedric quest where you have to kill everyone in Knifepoint Ridge stealthily. The people there are now going "Huh, what was that?" while I'm still like 20 feet away from them, then running directly to me and attacking. I'll see if setting stealth back to 99 will help.

I think it's both setting it back to 99 then advancing it again to 100 (player.incpcs sneak) that is needed for the "fix" to work, in case just setting it to 99 doesn't work for you.

Well once I take two steps while sneaking it went back up to 100 anyway. I've tried this like 22 times now and it's still not working. I've tried just player.setav sneak 99, I've tried curing the Sanguinus Vampiris (it hasn't advanced past the initial disease part yet) then player.setav sneak 99, and I've tried player.removeperk 00058214 (to remove Shadow Warrior) then player.setav sneak 99. At all times trying to sneak up on someone whose back is towards me sitting down at about 10 feet away he stands up turns around and almost instantly starts shooting lightning at me.

Haloboy, you said after many loads it worked. About how many is that? Was 20 tries for me too low or something? I don't really want to keep repeating this over and over if it's not gunna help....

Hey I just got back and seen this or I would have replied sooner.

What I kept doing was resetting my stealth to 99, then when I would sneak near an npc it would instantly jump to 100. So I kept sneaking around them and testing it. Sometimes they would detect me and sometimes they wouldn't. It took me maybe 3-4 loads of tinkering with it until it finally stayed fixed. I kept trying different sets of armor and even tried no armor just to make sure everything went back to normal.

I really don't know what else you could do to make the fix stick. I'm gonna test it out some more when I get home to see if it perma fix'd my sneaking problem. But as of last night everything was working fine with any armor I wore.

Try removing all Sneak enhancing gear, setting it to 99, saving, exiting out of Skyrim completely, then loading it back up.

There's a bug with Quickloads where they don't flush all the variables they should, allowing enemies to instantly detect you if you quickload near one after getting detected and/or killed.

Just as an extra note, all my saves and loads were hard saves. No quick loads or auto's

I would love to get this little problem pinpointed, because I don't think it affects anyone on the console as much as it is with PC user's. Because I pretty much did everything on my save file on the 360, and just xfered to the PC for some extra fun. After that the sneak glitched.

Yeah, I was using quickloads/saves. I tried it like this a couple times and it still didn't work, but then I fast traveled to the nearest town, removed everything I was wearing even though none of it enhanced sneak (unless you count shrouded gloves) even my weapons and arrows, set my sneak to 99, made a hard save, exited out of Skyrim completely, loaded it back up, sneaked around a guard a bit to get it back to 100, and then fast traveled back to Knifepoint Ridge. This seems to have done the trick. I was able to stealthily kill everyone and complete the quest.

Awesome! I'm glad we're getting somewhere this. I didn't re-call doing any quick saves or quick loads on my account, but it very well may have happened.

I'm happy the hard save, reset and reboot did the trick!

Well I just booted my game back up and now it seems the fix has vanished again.

Same old stuff, get close and instant detection.

I have tried taking off everything, resetting back to 99 in Whiterun, then hard saving, reloading, getting 100 sneak from a guard, then going to halted steam camp only to be seen in seconds in the dark. Now I'm back at square one and a little stumped =\

Very weird, it appears the fix works if I enter a Cave, but in the open world Npc's detect me immediately now. Ughh *sigh*

*edit* Gotta hit the bed, got work in the morning so no more time to work on this.

It's a very very very odd glitch. In open world it seems the sneak is broken, they detect me fast. But If i get away and let them reset going back to their business I can rush as fast as I want in sneak and they never detect me. BUT if the get back to their normal routine, the second I try to sneak at them they spot me. However upon entering a cave on one tested occasion no one inside was able to detect me sneaking up to them. My head hurts.... =[

Not to sound like a smart ass, but do you think it could possibly be that light affects sneak outside? Did you try this in the open world at night?

Yea I skipped time to when it was in the AM and pitch black out, well as dark as it could be anyway lol. Nothing seemed to work because I would even be behind something a good distance away from the NPC and start to move and the eye would begin to open and they would be like, "Did you hear something?" and then come running to attack me.

I'm gonna have to try some more testing on this to see whats bumping my sneak skill back to 0.

It's crazy because I used to be able to sneak up behind someone in broad daylight while moving as fast as I wanted (in sneak mode) and with whatever armor I had on.

*Edit*

Also if it means anything I was playing on version 1.1 on the PC and just updated last night to 1.3 and it didn't make any difference.

if anyone would like to check the save out and see what they can come up with I'd be more then happy to mail a copy of my hard save to try out for yourself to see what its doing. I'm at work atm so I can get in touch later this evening.

Is it Sneak or muffle the issue. I can be crouched, and the ai have a hard time seeing me, but if im moving around with my muffled boots and/or muffle spell, its like im walking normally, someone always hears me. I guess it could be both. Needs to be fixed.
