Sniper Builds

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 10:37 pm

I was interested in hearing everyone's thoughts and suggestions on a sniper build... My current playthrough is consisting of primarily a sniper build, high agility and luck and perception, and i have Legendary drop hunting rifle, Two Two Hunting Rifle. effect is it shoots two projectiles at once, high damage and good range, still need to mod it more. But i digress, does anybody else play with a sniper build? and if you do, what're your stats, gear, etc. also any suggestions on how to get certain equipment that are good for a sniper build would be appreciated too. I just want to make an OP sniper build, or at least as OP as i can get while playing on the hard difficulty of Fallout 4.. Thanks everyone for your feedback, どうもありがとうございました!

I dont play a "sniper" build. I snipe regularly though.

It depends if u are a vats guy or real time.

If you play real time luck is not needed.
Personally i go with ninja sandman and sneak perks with a silenced hunting rifle and a big boost to rifleman.

This stacks a huge amount of damage with the silenced weapon boost on top of sneak attack boost and armor pen.

In terms of gear, a full upgraded sniper rifle using .50 cal rounds, one of those fancy tracking scopes and a suppressor. I wear a chameleon chest piece which makes it harder for people to see you when you're stationary.

When it comes to perks, I lean towards rifleman, Sneak, Ninja and Bloody Mess. Basically everything needed to make sure I shoot to kill the first time, and don't end up being shot at. :P

Chameleon chest? Do you mean shadowed, or is there some unique piece that gives this chameleon you're talking about?

Chameleon is a possible Legendary armor effect.

The only attribute you really need is Perception. Luck isn't all that great because you don't really need the crits with how much damage sniper rifles already do. Just enough Agility for the Stealth perk is fine, although if you use VATS a lot I could see putting more in for the AP. Also enough Intelligence for Gun Nut as you really do need those weapon mods. I would personally have a 6 in intelligence, since the best weapon mods need a rank in Science! Not to mention plasma sniper rifles are pretty op and need science for all of their upgrades. Only downside is they don't get a silencer, but that damage is just so good.

As for gear, if you're trying to be stealthy keep the armor light and try to find legendary pieces with the Chameleon effect. The only gun I can think of off the top of my head that's particularly good is the rifle sold by Tinker Tom in the Railroad, but really any ol' hunting rifle works just fine, especially once you can upgrade them to .50 caliber receivers.

I still like to include luck in my sniper build, because I can take advantage of my high AP, better criticals and gunslinger in close quarters to decimate anyone foolish enough to get close! Otherwise I focus on rifleman, sneak and Ninja to maximize my damage (I didn't have enough Skill points in my planned build for Mr. sandman, because I am capping myself at level 50).

So, how much better is "chameleon" than "shadowed", or could you mod legendary chameleon armor to be shadowed?

I'm not entirely sure how much better chameleon is than shadowed but you do go invisible as if you're using a stealthboy when you're stationary.

Well, it won't hurt, since sooner or later you're going to have to fight something that gets in your face, and for that i prefer an automatic weapon. Which of course benefits from a high critical chance.

That's the plan anyways I'm only 20. I run with crafted shadowed gear, modified a short hunting rifle into a sniper rifled (Shaun).

It's ridiculously better. The very first legendary piece i found was a Chameleon chest piece - I think I was about Level 7 - bad guys have to pretty much be within 20-30 feet and be looking right at you to see you. With my beloved Laser Sniper, nothing gets that close.

Side question. Does light from laser weapons still effect stealth?

Yeah, I'm thinking along these lines as well- critical boosts are really the most helpful if you use automatic weapons. With a rally low fire rate as a sniper Luck/crit boosts don't seem as useful. I'm doing a sniper build but with the twist of using energy weapons primarily (once I start finding more ammo, that is...). One thing I THINK I'm understanding correctly as for my plan of laser sniper is that you no longer have separate skill development branches for Energy Weapons- this is just tied to the type of weapon (rifle or pistol or automatic weapon, etc.) Yes, there are a couple of high-level Intelligence perk branches for radiation weapons but other than that it doesn't matter if you're shooting shells or laser beams as long as you develop the skills for the right type of weapon. Can anyone confirm that? That has to be the case, if not Energy Weapons guys are s.o.l.

I use Rifleman, Mister Sandman, Sneak and Ninja primarily, with perks in Armorer, Gun Nut and one in Science! for crafting. I also have a few in Gunslinger for backup.

My armour is self-crafted Shadowed Leather stuff with a Combat Helmet and an upgraded set of Military Fatigues beneath. Of course, if I could find some Chameleon armour that would be amazing, but no luck so far.

My main rifle, 'Ask Questions Later', is a highly modified Supressed .50 Hunting Rifle, and I use the Medium Night Vision Scope. My sidearm is a modded version of a certain silenced pistol from the Railroad quest line.

Overall it's a highly enjoyable character to play, although it can feel a bit too easy at times. But hey - that's what the higher difficulties are for, right?

Shotguns and rifles benefit from the same perk making for a viable build that works with both short and long distance encounters. Here's how I would do the build...

S 3
P 4
E 3
C 6
I 6
A 6
L 1

I would not put points on scrounger, scrapper, or any luck its not needed.. Guns are relatively heavy to farm for what they give breaking them down. I value local leader and science perks as more valuable than increased sneak critical damage early in the game so I left agility at 6.. You could decide for yourself or wait for the bobblehead or just put a point into agility at level 2. Get the perception bobblehead you should run into it early....

Armorer, gun nut, rifleman, lockpick to expert, sneak to at least rank 1... Improve your armor and guns.. Add muffle to the legs and pocketed or deep pocketed to other items... Don't bother with radiation protection you'll stumble upon hazmat suits. Build lots of water purifiers for water and sell the water to buy ammo and materials... At least 4 or the large ones for 160+ water... Local leader gives you caps and extra venders to barter ammo and materials with. Terminal hacking to expert comes in handy. Find yourself charisma boosting suit hat and glasses for barter prices.

Should be a stronger than avg build.. I don't use vats much as its accuracy leaves a bit to be desired for me... Sniping without vats works great in this game as does shotty at close range.

doesnt luck effect quality and amount of loot? and legendary creature chance? i started with 5 increased to 6 at low level and am wearing undershirt&jeans for total of 7 and im only up to level 15 and not done much at moment but have found a huge array of highly modded guns & armour including stuff with lvl2 mods starting around level 7-8 (need to be level 13 to make lvl 2 weapon mods!)and have found 12 legendary creatures so far including 3 legendary ghouls together in fiddlers green trailer estates. am also thinking of ditching my army helmet for one of the luck hats boosting it too 8 as i dont feel armor does anything really, but that army hat looks pretty cool on my character

i also have tonnes of ammo and havent been close at any stage of the game from running low let alone out. and despite not really selling anything at all just raider armour and unmodded pipe pistols and spending 1100(?) on building the weapons and the junk stand still have over 4000 caps

isnt this because of high(ish) luck???

if i remember i started with 3 5 1 4 5 5 5

now im on 3 6 2 6 6 6 6 raw and then with armor/stuff im wearing im at 3 7 2 7(10 with dedicated cha gear) 7 7 7

i have no combat skills yet, spent my perks on stats/crafting/scrapping/lockpick/hacking/local leader so far yet but have been playing as a sniper and once start working on combat perks will build along a sniper path.

i found a short hunting rifle at level 5 and modded it to full stock, long barrel, and scope straight away and everything died from miles away with never seeing me, the raider in power armor with fatman in lexington i sniped, sneak attack headshot, from so far away that when my first shot didnt kill him (just a tiny sliver left) he just ran back and foward in "caution" cause was so far away lol even when i stood up to see if he would fire at me he wouldnt cause i was just too far away. cant hit anything at distance in vats though lol.

robots i have found to be pretty tough (wonder if energy weapons hurt them more?) but i can just stay waaaaaaaaaay out of their range where they cant detect me and just snipe (the protecteron over by the fort hagen filling station took 8 sneak attack headshots to kill!! and the misty gutsy there took more, body shots though)

have found a legendary hunting rifle which im using now too, cant remember what its called but has unlimited ammo capacity, is kinda funny running around with 286 rounds in the mag haha.

i use a medium scope for better peripheral as i dont feel i need a longer scope (yet atleast)

i love my sniper rifle and combat shotgun combo, when that one unlucky ghoul manages to figure out where i am he runs into a wall of lead from the shotgun probably should have stayed where he was and taken the headshot haha

The issue I have with Chameleon is it messes up my pip-boy. Almost all of the textures on it go away and the text goes retina burning white. I have to stop sneaking to use the pip-boy.

I don't believe so, I have used the laser musket extensively as my early sniping weapon on my test build.

I would recommend using the SPECIAL book you find in sanctuary to boost your luck to 2 for scrounger. On my test build I didn't have the perk, but after investing in the first 2 levels on my sniping build by level 10, I not only have plenty of the ammo I want (.45, .308, .50) as a sniper, plus all that overflowing .38 and 5.56 ammo I am now picking up is getting sold to purchase rarer ammo such as the .44 ammo and EC!

Dont care if its a junk weapon or not, but the laser musket seems pretty awesome. Love the animation and look for it, its just so awesome. Would be more cool with a bayonet what happened there that they left that out? Its like what ALL muskets had, haha. They need to add that in because its weird not having it as an option.

Rifleman and gunslinger 4 stars

Sneak

Sandman (both my pistol and sniper have silencers)

I've had ample ammo without it..
If I need ammo I buy it from vendors trading it for purified water... I haven't needed it I just have extra purified water to barter.

Good point! I didn't think of investing in a water purifier in a settlement (I assume that will make a lot of extra purified water) as a source of caps!

There is also a pistol that you get from the RR called the Deliverer. A great 10MM pistol with a scope. One of the best pistols in the game. And quiet as a mouse. You can almost anything down with it, even at range.

Also carry a nice shotgun... for those up close and personal moments.
