Sniper's life for me!

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 12:57 am

I'm sure this may have been covered in previous posts but here it goes...

How many out there think FO4 will have a more robust and improved sniper mechanic than it's predecessor? Will there be loss of velocity and bullet drop factoring, etc? Will attachments such as scope and silencer be options? Will sniping through walls/windows be a possibility? What about ricochet? Will the option to prone be added? Do you care for any of these elements to be included in FO4? :geek:

I love sniping. This is what I think we know at this point about it.

- I think some people have said there is going to be a "hold your breath to steady aim" feature for sniping now.

- There is already a perk that appears to let you shoot through walls

- No information on bullet physics or being able to go prone or ricochetting bullets though.

I would assume you can silence a sniper, but I don't think there has been any footage released showing that you can do so. I always create a sneaky sniper character, so I am very interested to see how the sniping mechanic has changed and how the sneak mechanic has changed.

I doubt bullet drop will be implemented. From what can be gleaned from the combat gameplay we've seen, it's simply not there.

Scopes and silencers are already confirmed.

There's a Perception perk that appears to allow you to shoot through walls and/or around cover.

Ricochet I doubt.

Going prone I also doubt, though it's something I'd personally like and - if it's not in the core game - do hope a mod is made to allow for it.

The one thing that we've certainly seen (with a close examination of the "Atom Bomb Baby" video) is that you can hold your breath to reduce gun sway when aiming with a scope. That's an exciting feature to have for us sniping enthusiasts. Plus, with the addition of the highly extensive weapon modding system, we can craft our sniper rifle to suit our own tastes, and can even have an Energy Weapon sniper rifle.

I don't think we'll see bullet drop but weapons have had velocity variation since FO3. Just some individual weapons hving higher or lower velcity than standard but still.
Silencers are most likely available and a lot of different scopesfor at least some weapons are confirmed. Perception 9 perk has something to do with shooting and walls but beyond the perk picture, it's just speculation atm. No word on prone or ricochet but I don't think we'll see those.

Go right ahead - snipe a Death Claw.

Early game sniper rounds only irritate him - and draw his attention.

I do like sniping as well and i'm thinking of a Laser sniper for now.

I hope that PER 9 perk will be indeed as speculated, the same goes for the holding breath option.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for prone TBH, as for the silencer and scopes, as said above confirmed and already working out some ideas in my head.

Ricochet is an awesome idea i haven't thought about, would love it but i don't think they'll include it.

I've always found great pleasure in pulling off a very difficult shot. I liked taking care of the NCR correctional facility from the large ridge nearby. There are some tough shots there with a lot of the NPC's moving around

I hope they severly tone down sniping efficiency....cause it was way too easy in new vegas and it was boring....on the other hand i hope sneaking up on a guy and stabbing him will be viable

There was bullet drop in Fallout 3, to an extent; the projectile settings had a gravity parameter that would be used. But I don't think we'll be shooting at a far enough range to actually notice anything.

Me too love sniping and now with power armor seems we can go high ground buildings, mind you you probably have to jump building to buildings to get high.

Holding breath is confirmed in the video.

Personally, i find sniping the most boring thing you can do in FPS games. And it is almost always the easiest way to fight.

I'm a scout rifle/sniper girl myself - mainly because I'm scared of pretty much all the enemies in Fallout!

I'll be a Sniper until I get power armor, then its Tank all the way. Miniguns, explosives, and supersledges.

Sniper here too. I tend to fall apart in close range when things get hectic, and the best way to even the odds is to thin the herd before wading in with guns blazing.

I echo many of the sentiments here. Close-quarters combat can be hectic and stressful, trying to turn around as foes move behind / around you, catching up to them as they run, etc.

Not sure, exactly, how Skyrim did it differently but there I rarely had a problem sneaking up on foes and skewering them with a dagger without alerting their buddies. Perhaps it was the large number of dungeons and such that made that tactic easier? Sneaking up on someone out in the open is extremely hard in Fallout-3 (been practicing recently).

The main appeal of sniping, to me, is that you control the fight. You decide when the fighting starts, and -- oftentimes --- you also determine when it ends (after your one shot :) ). Sniping has the further advantage that ~usually~ you are far away from melee range and sometimes so far away that even if other foes are alerted they can't pinpoint you before you can snipe more (or move).

The down side of sniping is, of course, close quarters and being surprised. The one time I played a multiplayer game with my brother and some friends, I quickly snuck to the second story of a building and started sniping them. Unfortunately, being un-used to fighting respawning ~player~ foes, I didn't realize they would figure out where I was.... imagine my surprise when I'm staring down the scope, looking for targets, only to hear a loud boom, turn and see my brother with a shotgun to my face (how he missed the first time, I do not know).... with a sniper rifle equipped, I ~tried~ to shoot back, but at that close range it was too easy to miss, and reload takes forever (normally not an issue).

So sniping definitely has its place and its own method of play... but there are times it simply does not work well. That can be said of other weapons ./ styles of fighting, too, though. Rock-paper-scissors kind of thing ---- an expert martial artist is not going to be too effective against a sniper stationed at extreme rifle range and up high inside a building, sniping at the martial artist who is standing in an open field, for example. Turn the tables and put the martial artist ~in~ the building with the sniper who is stationary at the window as the martial artist sneaks up on him, though.....

As a consummate Pistoleer...Not really.

The only time I bust out a Sniper Rifle is when it's near tactically necessary to advance on the place I'm breaching. Otherwise, I prefer small arms and melee.

I prefer the stealthy up-close kill myself, so I can't really call you all cowards without being a hypocrite.

Cowards.

I thought the perk for perception was more like a wallhack feature for your pip-boy, allowing you to see enemies/people through walls.

I try to avoid using out and out overwatch/sniping tactics since when done correctly they turn the game from a challenge to a cakewalk (reposition after each shot, always have a covered exit from position, leave something behind when you reposition like a frag mine).

Instead I try to get by with a medium to long range rifle (the Battle Rifle in the FNV Gunrunners pack turned into my bread and butter gun), then switch to a high capacity handgun or a shotgun after advancing on an objective.

To be fair, I use everything except melee (maybe once or twice). I always adjust to the situation at hand using what inventory I have in the moment and rarely will fast travel back for readjusting unless it specifically is a "NEED". I've always enjoyed sniping when it comes to camps & forts where I have the high ground. Otherwise I like stealth. Once I'm in Power Armor, roll out the big guns like a tank!!!

If they did add bullet drop then in all likely hood the laser sniper rifle would be everyone's sniper weapon of choice. But they won't few games bother with such a realistic feature that frankly gets in the way of fun. Who actually wants to calculate bullet drop while staring down a scope?
