my opinion on this is
they put it in the cinematic, it would be cruel for them to leave it out
i love sniping but i admit that there are a bunch of douches (am i allowed to say that?) out there that do it, often ignoring objectives

The gun the guy has is in the game (It's the Drognav/SR-93), it just doesn't do as much damage as the cinematic implies. The cinematic was probably made long before they thought about weapon balance anyway.

But I don't think that its any different from other game cinematics. In the Dawn of War trailer (first that came to mind) You had a space marine cutting orcs in half with his chainsword left and right. It takes a lot more melee hits than that to kill orcs in that game. People don't go complaining about that though. "I thought the chainsword was a OHK weapon". The reason is that people don't have an idea of what the chainsword should do before they even get into the game.

So why not drop your preconceived notions about what an FPS game should be like, give the devs some room to be creative, and wait until you actually play the game to complain?

It doesn't look like there's going to be a need or opportunity for any long ranged sniping in Brink. An assault rifle with a scope is probably going to be the closest we'll get, and that should do just fine.

But you know there's gonna be players who will do everything they can to design a sniper rifle that behaves like a sniper rifle. They will experiment with weapon attachments and player abilities, and find the perfect mix, mainly just out of spite to the game - like a "ha ha, I made a sniper anyway."

I picture a lot of players choosing Engineer to snipe - for the damage boost. This could be bad, seeing as Engineers are a primary objective class, and seeing a that your team has a lot of Engineers, yet no one is completing objectives, could be frustrating. Players wouldn't know if the Engineer is actually an Engineer, or a wannabe sniper.

If they can make it a viable weapon/playstyle, I say go for it. But if they're just sitting back and not getting involved because they're waiting for that perfect shot, their team is likely going to get fed up with them for not contributing.

Engineer is usually an area denial specialization which a sniper also is/fire support. There will likely be wannabe snipers in Brink but like all snipers some can be effective. A light engineer between a buffed rifle, turret, and mines is going to make life annoying for the enemy, It makes sense for the light to keep the enemy at range and draw them either into the turret or a mine.

Interesting, I came up with the exact same train of thought today.

Also they don't just have claymores to secure their position, but full-blown turrets.

The guys over at Splashdamage could solve this problem easily: let players kick other players mid match. Put it up to a vote for sure, but if you can get 4 other people to side with you? Good-bye useless camper that does bugger-all for the team.

Allowing players to kick other players (this applies mostly to XBL) is an awful idea. I have been kicked out of countless L4D matches simply because I didn't use my mic. I had one - I could hear what they were saying. I just don't like talking to people I don't know.

Or getting kicked because you're new and start to learn the game or because you're too "good" for others. I can already imagine guys complaining: "He stole my objective, kick him"

I know that feeling.

I also know that feeling and can see it happening.

Exactly. Giving players the ability to kick other players to kick on XBL, would be like giving Dracula the keys to the blood bank.

If you ask me, occasionally getting kicked from a room for doing too good trumps having rooms that ruined by a hacker with no way to get rid of them. It would be really nice if just relying on a hack detector could work, but people are always figuring out new ways to avoid those.

Doesn't your concern have more to do with having good anti-cheat software, rather than a kick feature. Besides, you'll be playing on PC - chances are a mod will kick any players with suspicious behavior before it becomes a problem.

Even good anti-cheat software has holes. Its impossible for them to patch the holes the moment someone with a hack gets in undetected, and for those times a kick function is needed, or else hackers can ruin a game.

Active mods are nice, but are rarely able to ban instantly either. Sure, you can report them and hope they will get banned eventually, but it wont save the game that you're in.

I'm pretty sure there's dedicated servers for Brink, so you can just have an admin ban them from the server if they're hacking, right?

On PC yes. But that's not really possible on consoles, because they work with a host.

I have no idea if the question has been asked before. But at about 1:20 in the "Minds on the brink" video someone fires a weapon that (to me) resembles some kind of semi-automatic (possibly bolt action) rifle.
Is this the "Sniper rifle" or is it just one of the assault rifles?

Neither, its likely one of the two short rifles that light players are able to use. They resemble a sniper, but shoot faster, and do less damage. They don't kill in one shot, even to the face.

Think of it as a "Marksman's Rifle" High power and high accuracy, but not as specialized as a sniper.
