Sniping in Brink

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 2:04 pm

I doubt anyone will be able to dominate the scoreboard by concentrating on kills.

Well shame since that ability is gone for the soldier.

When did this come out??? i was really looking forward to that ability D:

I think the most recent http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/18/brink-video-feature-and-screens-from-james-bonds-villain-base/ shows that the slow-firing long rifles are viable in a normal firefight, and that there are areas that are wide enough open for a scope to be useful.

I have a feeling this is a semantics debate more than anything. People mean different things when they type "sniper," which is making it difficult to communicate. Thats what I'm seeing, at any rate.

As far as I know, Brink is not going to be a game that encourages people to camp in one spot and try to score OHK's on people randomly running by. Doing this is going to give you little in the way of XP, and Xp is the only way the game measures your success in a match. If K/D ratios were involved, this type of strategy would be more viable, but Brink is going in another direction.

It will, however, be possible to use rifles to shoot enemies from a distance, and with the right specs this might be a viable and effective tactic.

That's what I'm trying to get at too.

And Brink-style snipers will be viable for periods of area-denial, but should be prepared to move on quickly when circumstances change.

Like I've said multiple times before, they're now precision support weapons rather than cross-map kill cannons. And the map design and emphasis on objectives should greatly reduce the number of useless campers, sniper-campers in particular. Judging from the most recent gameplay video, I think they look pretty much perfect.

All in all, I think snipers will still have their place in Brink. It just won't be a "conventional" sniper role. Can you imagine trying to attack a location defended by an engineer's turret and a sniper? I imagine it would be very difficult at best.

You would likely have to eliminate the sniper and the turret before easy access would be allowed. Sounds like a job for an operative.

Seconded.

My suggestion:

Get behind them, hack turret, then play counter-sniper.

The sniper rifle gameplay in the new vid didn't look all that bad. There's no shame in a two hit kill. Unfortunately, it seems like the bolt action long rifle will largely be ignored. The damage difference is negligible when it's going to take at least 2 hits to kill.

By "patient camping sniper" I mean the kind of player who will find ONE spot they like and wait for someone to come their way.

Willingness to move to a better position, or from one that's been compromised, is a necessary skill. And one a lot of FPS snipers don't have.

Right, but I think we've reached this point before, that's just a camper that happens to be sniping. :P I was simply disagreeing with the use of "patient" in contrast to "moving" neither need imply camper and both could very well be referring to the very same sniper.

And Brink-style snipers will be viable for periods of area-denial, but should be prepared to move on quickly when circumstances change

I think we're sitting on the same page, just different ends of the same thought. Your "brink style sniper" is what I consider a legitimate sniper. Much like Wraith does not accept the imitation "ninja assassins" as anything more than imitations, I don't accept imitation "snipers" as snipers. :D

The advantage with the barrett is that you can headshot light players with one bullet. If you wanted to be a true sniper, its the way to go. For people who are just looking to have a light body type and a precise weapon (many people fit into the group), the Drognav is the way to go. I personally plan to use the Drognav with a simple reflex sight, reserving the Barrett for sniping if I ever get the urge.

I think I'll use the Drognav if I ever really need to snipe. The other rifle takes forever to cycle the bolt, so it wouldn't be a very good suppression weapon. That seems like the role snipers will take: area denial. Can't really do that if you can only fire a shot every 3 seconds.

I'm not sure i've read this right but your saying that snipers are a suppression weapon?
If that is the case then i'm sorry but your wrong snipers are a support role in any millitary they support the troops from long, medium and short rang and are well versed in many weapons. Suppression is only for the gun group that is their role on the battlefield a good example of this would be the Heavey with a mini gun that is suppression fire. or otherwise known as heavey figher support.

In theory, you could use sniper rifles for suppression, bunch of guys watching a corridor from behind cover that your team needs to get through? have the sniper at the back fire a clip at the edge of the cover, should make the enemy duck back long enough to get closer.

I was thinking that snipers are more area denial and area supression.

Well, its true enough. When you know where a sniper is, you either avoid the area or actively hunt the sniper. If you are in the area and not keeping tabs on the sniper, you tend to have a short lifespan.

Yes, most of us are basing our theories of sniping IN A GAME off of games.

I wonder why that might be?

To be honest, I can't believe this discussion is still going on. :P

I still think snipers should be support, picking off enemies or softening them up. This could already provide a huge help in a Team-based game.

Generally I would consider the sniper a support role, but he does provide area denial in that role. I think this is another case word choice, as suppressing fire is not what the sniper provides, but one shot from a sniper can supress/deny an entire unit from advancing on the battlefield.

It can till they find an alternative route, but as far as guarding the most used paths sounds solid.

Exactly why I plan to play Neer with a Long Rifle.

Letting it soften the enemy up opens the opportunity for single-body-shot incapacitations.
