Sniping

I was going off of the videos. But you're right, Damage varients could be completely different by the game's release.

based on the demo at QuakeCon, here is what Lane said:

"the amount of bullets it takes to kill seemed to balance the game perfectly. Splash Damage has really outdone itself."

having a sniper rifle doesn't necessarily make you a sniper.
can't find the link H0RSE provided about real sniper teams so...

and i would expect recons to scout O.o
not be a lazy guy and not move for months.

How do you survive headshots? Bullet hits your jaw instead of your head?

This isn't exactly a realistic game. Really, I'm just gonna role with it.

If the game focused more towards realism I would suggest it OHK to the head.

I think you might be surprised by how many people survive headshots.

That's just luck, not because they have a lot of skin.

actual there was a guy who tried to shot himself in the head 2 times and both times the gun was not at the exact right angle and his skin deflected it.

I don't snipe at all- I despise it. To me, putting an emphasis on sniping is one of the things that killed FPS games, along with health regen, insta-kill melee attacks, and ironsights.

how did ironsights ruin FPS?

Just got done watching their interview, great stuff, and looked at the action frames. It seems each player takes ten hit points to kill with a extra 10 points for the kill. 1 guy was hit with a shot to the chest, took 1 hit point, then nailed in the head a couple times to equal a total of 9 points. Another guy died to a several chest shots with what looked like a headshot that cause 2 hit points. so from the looks of it, damage could either be a defined number of hit points each bullet takes or kind of like a RPG when there's a ratio of how much damage a shot can do.

*sigh* I seriously think people are misunderstanding me.

From the sound it, they want everyone to round and aim for the chest and "If you're lucky" enough to land one or two shots into their head it might do 1 or 2 hit points extra.

I just summed up the entire post in two neat little lines. Oh look, someone is wrong. Even if they only do 1 or 2 more points of damage, it's still better than aiming for the chest. So that makes no sense now.
I doubt headshots only do very little extra damage. I'm betting the "snipers" are not as powerful as you think. You're thinking Intervention, think more like a bolt-action EBR.

I think someone was using a rifle in the Dev video. Around 2:03. A semi auto, I think high damage, high recoil weapons is being used.

I for one am looking forward to the close-mid ranged combat, i play engineer in BC2 and its so so annoying getting shot in the face from some 12 year old hiding in the brush, fairplay to SD to take these steps

Well I for one am looking forward to mid-longer ranged combat, I play TF2 and I'm bored of meatshotting people as scout. :P

Seriously though I don't think the SMART system will be of much use in CQ combat however sliding around behind cover in the mid-range firefights will be very interesting. Additionally running around the rooftops as a light sniper/rifleman would be a lot of fun.

I hope it's comparable to the W:ET sniping. Dealing considerable damage, but no 1 HKO whenever someone's at full health.
I prefer something like this:
In order to kill a (full health)
- Light: 1hs + 1 shot at a random place on the body
- Medium: 1 hs + *atleast* 1 chest shot
- Heavy: 2hs

Since the game is fast paced, I don't think people will easily get hs when somebody's moving.

Well, thats not how its going work. They aren't sniper rifles. They are short rifles. So they are lighter, and cannot kill in one shot by default. They seem to take like...4 or so. They wanted them to be used to "soften the enemies up" or finish them off.

1. Player levels could work like ranks, with leaderboards only amongst friends.

2. I hate getting sniped in FPS games by some random in the bushes. I'm a bit more of a Shotguns In Corridors guy personally, who likes melee attacks but not OHK melee. So personally, I like the focus in CQC.

3. Rifles in Brink should be more like high damage semi-auto guns, but not enough to OHK. More focus on aiming, but not for a single perfect shot.

On a separate note- Quick scoping is the worst thing ever in an FPS. Where's the logic in the idea that waving the scope in front of your face will make your shots more accurate then shooting from the hip?

Well aiming down a sight would make it more accurate than firing from the hip... no where near as much as lying still in a prone position would but it'd be a fair improvement over firing from the hip.

To be honest, I hate being killed by the "Shotguns In Corridors guy personalities" but have nothing against being killed by the killer-bushes. But hey, I am a killer-bush myself and enjoy a little sniper war.

Quick scoping isn't aiming down the sight though, it's waving it in front of your face. That would cause so much gun wobble that the only person safe from a bullet would be the person you were aiming for.

And if you resent being killed by "Shotgun in corridor" people, Brink probably isn't the game for you. It's confirmed that the game will be more focused around close quarters rather than long range snipers. As everyone has been saying. This isn't meaning to be offensive, it's just true.
