Snow that behaves realistically

Post » Sat Jan 30, 2010 9:24 am

since a more significant portion of skyrim will be snowy.....im assuming anyways..........realistic snow physics would add to the game.

make snow angels

roll up snow and make snowmen

ski and nord-board

snowball fights..........no not the magical ones

snow forts

igloos

making snow traps

That might be tough unless they had them as character actions, like looking at the place you want the snow angel or snow fort, then you mostly watch while your character makes it. I think they tried to make snowball fights in Bloodmoon, maybe they'll try again.

Uh... Not even going to mention how both incredibly tedious and hard this would be to do, it's probably not even possible on for some people unless you have a god computer. My character isn't a 9 year old either, not sure why they'd be making snow angels. :L

This!

Jeez, seriously. I am tired of all of these people asking such stupid things. Think a little, try to imagine if it would be possible and then make a constructive post!

While iI doubt they'd have any way to interact with the snow to that degreee it's FULLY possible to have snow with depth that reacts to movement through it, and no it wouldn't take a super computer.

Play uncharted 2, it had the best loking snow in a game to date, I hope Skyrim's is even better.

hmm, that would be freaking awesome, but I don't think they have time for that in the game seeing as it is so close to release. But a snow angel in a snow fort on top of a mountain would be a sweet easter egg.

there is a mod called RTS for fallout 3 which lets you place buildings anywhere in game........well almost anywhere. in igloo or a snow fort would be simple by comparison. for snowball fights im thinking along the lines of you see your character bend over and pat a ball of snow together and then throw it (would also be a good excuse to bring back thrown weapons as well). snow angels would be a simple texture like bloodspatter or do it like shooter games that let you see damage by showing a hole in the wall or ground. skiing games have been around forever so no need to clarify that.

what i do see are a bunch of people commenting that apparently know absolutely nothing about how games work. and assuming that you need a super computer all the time is a bit silly as well.

Nordboard! Thats creative and wonderful to think about. In the end, there should be sleds but not skis.

Although the OP is going way too far, I do think some form of advanced snow physics and particle effects ARE needed in this type of setting.

Unfortunately though for totally realistic snow you'd need a computer powered by the very universe itself. Some sort of realistic snow would be nice, but I'm not holding my breathe for it.

Foot-prints in snow is enough, and being able to move the snow realistically by... etc doing a destruction spell or hitting it with a sword.

That's what you can realistically expect from a game 2011 (or actually almost 2012).

I'd rather have more lore & more quests than snowball fights, please.

Besides, in countries where there's permanently snow, I doubt they frequently have snowball fights.

Have you pled uncharted 2? The snow in it was amazing. It had depth to it and actually moved from objects in it.

That shows it off fairly well.

If we have that kind of snow in TES V I'll be happy with it.

Good example, I agree completely. Snow like this should exist. Looks pretty realistic... instead of just having a snow texture you walk on now matter what, which is just plain awful.

Yeah that snow looks nice.

I definitely loved walking through the snow in oblivion and listening to it crunch under my feet. It would be great to actually SEE it crunch under my feet too! I'm curious though, how will snow react to say... an giant AoE fireball?

OH OH!! you know what would be AWESOME? having areas that are completely inaccessible because of the amount of snow but can be cleared with sufficiently poerful fire spells!!! (think: the incinerate plasmid from bioshock used to clear ice.)

I dont want to repeat myself too much, but heres something I posted in the "Disappointed by Location" thread:

"If they did make large areas of snow and mountain top, but made the snow progressively deeper and walking through it progressively harder (while giving greater and greater stat penalties for activities done there) then they can effectively cordon off areas of the map for higher level players.

Imagine trudging up the side of a mountain, your vision slowly disappearing to the blizzards of snow, only able to see a few feet ahead of you and only able to progress at an extremely slow pace because of the deep snow when suddenly a mountain monster jumps out at you and all you can do is casually swing your sword for all the effort in the world. You would be terrified of that area, but would be constantly thinking about it (what is there, what am I missing out on). 20 levels later you think maybe you can bare it again, maybe you’re ready. You walk up the mountain again slowing almost every yard for the deep snow. But when you get there, find a temple and some amazing loot and an awesome book that tells of the ancient cult that once worshiped here and of the forgotten history of the area. That would be satisfying beyond words.

lol, I think I'm getting carried away, I doubt they will implement something like that. Oh well, one can dream  "

That's what I was going to recommend, but if they implement bump-mapped decals then I'll be ok with that.
