SOE network is offline

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:03 pm

From what I can tell it's not possible to gain access to any of their sites. I tried the SWG site and you just get a message saying they've "had to take the service down" do to an issue they've discovered, connected to the recent investigation. I can't play SWG either.

I'm beginning to think it wasn't such a good idea to subscribe to SWG. On the plus side I only opened my account during the early hours of this morning. It's been a few days since they realised they'd been hacked but that was supposedly only for the PS3 network but I'd of thought all the details that the Hackers got would have been taken a few days ago, when the problem was first detected, what do you think?

Also when things do come back online do you think it would be a good idea to change my password etc. and is it possible to remove my CC details from my account with them, they're not needed at the moment anyway as I've got 30 days until the subs. are due?

The news we got was that they were taken down because a problem with the servers was detected while they were at work on the PSN. That means your data should be safe, it's likely just the right time to add whatever new security they came up with to the SOE network, too.

I just realised I bought the game through Steam, only they have my CC details. Will they have given it to SOE, i.e. to add to my Station account details. I'd have thought that when my 30 days were up I'd then have to personaly add my CC details to my Station account?

That is right, when you entered your serial number into the account you got your free month of playtime. And no, Valve did not hand your CC info to Sony, for that would be highly illegal.

Thanks, everthing should be fine my Station account can't have my CC details, as I didn't enter them. It got me thinking though, so I removed my CC details from my Steam account.

Yeah, I am over at Starsider's unofficial forum (for those who don't know, Starsider is one of the game's servers), and the general consensus is that they are upgrading their security because of the PSN incident. Either that, or they found there was a security problem with those servers as well.

Hope it's back up soon...

That's probably it but the message on their site doesn't fill you with much confidence. What is the site address you mentioned I'd like to keep up to date with things?

It's http://www.starsidergalaxy.com - mostly full of the roleplayers on the server, but it's pretty friendly.

Here's the station.sony.com maintenance announcement:

We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).

Sony is now saying there has been a security breach and 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been compromised along with credit/debit card info! This is crazy. They are saying this isn't a second attack. It is part of the ongoing investigation from the PSN hack.

it's funny because the first thing they confirmed stolen was account details, they never said anything about credit card information being compromised as well unless they released that information recently

This isn't about the PSN, it is SOE. Something completely different. Sony Online Entertainment. People who have signed up for MMO's like Final Fantasy XIV, Free Realms, DC Universe Online may have been compromised. 24.6 million.

Sony released this info today. I just saw the update on IGN. This is separate from the PS3 PSN incident. Credit and debit information for Sony Online Entertainment accounts have been compromised.

I'm pretty sure my new account is safe as they stated that the theft took place on 16-17th Apr and I only opened the account yesterday, plus as I mentioned I haven't updated my CC details to that account. But I did play SWG a few years ago, around 06-07 and they said that the only CC/DC details stolen were from an old database from 07, so my old card details may have been stolen. SOE can't contact me about it (which they state they will for customers affected), as back then I had a different PC, Email and Station account (lost the Username and Password details years ago). I know that card ran out in 08, so it shouldn't matter but I was reading somewhere that the card details still may be used, as with transactions credit companies simply charge the new card if the old one is billed. This doesn't sound right to me and if it is true, surely it would only be for a short time after activating your new card, not after 3 years. Anyone know anything about these things?

SOE did also state that the "3 digit security codes weren't stolen" with the rest of the catd info.

I'm on my phone so I couldn't provide a link. My apologies.

Also, "only 12,700"? Only?

as i suspected all the altruistic crap coming from the hackers was just a bunch of [censored]. normally i dont mind anonymous and his gang but these guys are getting a bit big for their britches. now potentially millions of people are going to have to cancel and get new cards and others might end up having to fight fraudulent purchases with their cards.

Apparently anonymous didn't do this.

Millions of accounts stolen =/= millions canceling their subscriptions. Even if they did obtain all that information, they really couldn't do too much with it. Not with that sheer amount of data.

So unless I'm horribly wrong, the most anyone needs to do is change their password.

they better get the word out then cause some people on other forums are saying he did do it. one of the problems when you work from the shadows is that anyone can claim to be anonymous and you either get the blame or the credit. alot of these people are just idiots who constantly whine and complain about "corporations" as they sit on their computer built by a corporation that their parents most likely paid for working for a corporation and using internet provided by a corporation and eating mcdonalds.

I don't think it matters if anonymous gets blame or credit, since they're nameless and faceless. Anonymous is just an easy group to pin the blame on, but it doesn't really matter to them either way.
