What kind of soldier?

Well i was thinking about that and: I am leaning towards as soldier who wields standard SMGs and Assault Rifles, but when he has Power Armor generally uses Big Guns :) Need any more info just ask

To start, you'll obviously take some Big Guns skill to handle the big weapons when the time for that comes. Medical and repair skills to heal yourself and your equipment in the field, especially SMGs and Assault rifles which break down pretty often.

Combat armour looks kinda US Armyish if thats the kind of thing your going for.

I wouldnt worry as much with speech, barter, or personality, you don't need these to go shoot things that your officer tells you to shoot.

Intelligence ~ 6 , A Soldier Needs To Be Smart

I disagree there. A soldier's job is not to think. Not to interact with civilians. A soldier must close all the feelings he has, all the free thought he might possess. Too smart soldiers never make it.

For the build itself, I won't throw in SPECIAL suggestions, as every human and thus every soldier is different.
Must-have TAGs are
Small Guns (obviously)
Explosives ('nades)
Repair (healthy gun, healthy soldier)

Armor: Combat armor + helmet (this and only this)
Weapon: Assault Rifle, combat/trench knife, 10mm pistol. 3 frag grenades.
Ammo: 240 5.56mm, 35 10mm. You can have more in your home lockers, but never take more than the mentioned amount with you.

Never, ever take Big Guns for a soldier. That ruins the RP, as big guns are traditionally only for power armored soldiers in Fallout games.

Have you ever considered the fact that when someone asks for a character build, It doesn't mean they want to role play?
Let him take as much ammo as he wants or whatever weapons.

 Fallout 3 is a role-playing game. You're always role-playing. You create a character and choose what kind of character you're going to be (sniper, soldier...). Role-playing doesn't mean you should eat food a few times a day and rest after every step you take. That's just one part of role-playing and it's completely optional.

I agree that a soldier should start with a low charisma and average intelligence(they dont have to think for themselves when there's an officer around, and the job doesn't really entail a great deal of public relations). On the other hand, if youre going for an officer build, these 2 aspects of SPECIAL will be fairly important. As for equipment restrictions, it should all depend on your play style. If you're good enough to only carry 3 grenades, then great. If you go certain places where combat is fairly intensive(raider camps for example), you could probably resupply that number of grenades by looting bodies and grenade boxes. The same goes with ammo.

Restricting the amount you take presents an interesting challenge and forces you to hone a particarlar playstyle. Like I said there's pros and cons.

A soldier's job is not to think? Are you kidding me? Soldiers need to constantly think and assess their surroundings. They aren't a bunch of mindless idiots who only know how to follow orders. College graduation rates in the military are higher than those among normal civilians. Not to mention that to be an officer you NEED a four-year degree.

If your serious on creating a realistic soldier character, I would suggest you use the "kevlar vest" mod and the "M4A1 Assault Rifle" mods. The M4A1 mod replaces the standard assault rifle, and the vest mod adds in a BP vest that can be worn over most outfits.

Sorry if I caused offence dude. I'm only being hypothetical for the purposes of creating a character build. An average intelligence doesn't denote a mindless goon. I've had a very small amount of military experience and many friends of mine (personal and net gamers) come from military backgrounds so I can see where you're coming from.

Yeah but having a degree doesnt automatically mean the person is smart. Ive known a few "educated idiots" in my time.

I would tailer the build around combat armor when first leaving the vault, you can get the armor from Rivet city around level 4 and prior by an encounter with Talon company. Soldiers need balance.Take repair, lock pick and guns. Strength about 7 and all others except Karma (3 or 4 for now)6. Do not take gun nut, you can find enough skill books early on to raise this skill. Stay away from big guns for now. Take comp, Strong back and raise karma and any specials lower then six by level 10. By level 10 aid Reilly's rangers and pick the suit for plus 1 luck at 12 take animal Friend as they will Allie with you against an enemy. If you have point lookout, go get the superior defender perk and this will raise the lethality of convention weapons and the A3-21 plasma, but if you want the feel of a say "operation anchorage soldier" stay away from energy weapons. Get Sydney's ultra smg and the Xuanlong assault rifle and superior defender perk raises lethality by 40 percent. Quests related specials take ant strength and help Bigtown for the lucky 8 ball. Would not hurt getting the lucky shades too. My personnal opinion if you want to do a soldier build, stay away from big guns. This is a squad based weapons system built around two or more people (the operator, and ammo loader(s). Realistically you would not carry thousand of rounds for miles and a XM214 5.56mm "mini-minigun , even if your first name was Chuck, Arnold, or Sylvester "Yo Adrian". Good luck and have fun with the build.

Why do you say this? I want to reduce the amount of ammo I carry, for a better RP experience, but 240? Do you pick up more in the field or is that the max you'll carry at any one time?

Sheesh...only using an AR!? Brutal...lol...in the early levels bullets'll be flyin' everywhere but into the target...lol

No Combat Shotgun?...maybe if the setting was Vietnam...lol...the Frankensteins take some killin' and you need a good can opener for the tin cans running around...

I'm not attacking your opinion, I'm thinking about using it, I just want to get a better idea of what your vision is.

Let him take as much ammo as he wants or whatever weapons.

I did not say there is any RP in there. Gameplay limitations, more likely. And besides, if you spent even a little time using your head, you'd realise that a "soldier build" is all about the equipment.

He wanted to be a soldier. A soldier follows the orders of his/her superior. Everything else comes from the plain survival instinct. By saying "not supposed to think" I mean that the soldier is not meant to do maths while in the trenches. You took it as I said a "non-thinking" soldier rushes to the enemy, throwing grenades all over the place.

What comes to the ammo, I recall that a modern US soldier is given 240 5.56mm to go with his/her M4. Also, in Operation: Anchorage, if you choose the assault rifle build, you get 240 ammo for it. Hence my ammo rule.
You can pick up ammo in the wasteland. The point is that when you leave home each time, you take only the 240 with you. You could have, say, 500 as max. amount of ammo overall, if you actually manage to loot so many in just one wasteland adventure.

You could always use a combat shotty, but that must be your only gun then. Real life soldiers don't carry miniguns, snipers, nuclear catapults etc. with them. Two hands, one gun. Of course you can HAVE other weapons too but only one with you at time. Others shall remain in your home locker.
And you can also get Sydney's Ultra to replace the pistol. The assault rifle can be changed into for example Xuanlong, if you find the normal AR too challenging.

But as I said, playing a soldier let alone RPing as one is all about the equipment. If you start wearing power armor and use miniguns to mow down the Enclave, you become just another Lone Wanderer.

Yet of course, if you find that too challenging, just set down the difficulty level.
Playing with low ammo is fun without any other rules, too. For once you have to actually think about your ammo consumption, and you gotta take them down one-by-one to avoid the unnecessary burst fire to take some muties down. Get close, use VATS and set 3 rounds of automatic fire on its head. 9 bullets, one dead mutie.

If you pick all the guns and ammo under the sun, you just become another Lone Wanderer. If you want to play as a soldier, then you must be like one, eh?
