Soldier Discussion

The official site says the soldier can choose to "specialize in grenades," probably through the use of unlockable abilites.

I think since "specialize in grenades" is used in the role description, it means that that's one of the Things Soldiers Do; I interpret it to mean that every Soldier is a grenade specialist. Obviously, if true, that would mean there will also be buyable abilities to enhance your grenade loadout, since that's a class trait.

yeah, I see it like turrets fro engineers - they all have them, but they can really make them shine with abilities.

So Soldiers can specialize in grenades, shielding teammates, resupplying ammo. Anything else we know of?

Maybe demo charges? Like a skill that lets you plant them faster, or makes them take less energy, or makes you harder to kill somehow while you're planting one.

If they have skills that can affect core objective abilities (like the HE charge) I would expect every class to have similar skills (faster hacking, faster building/repairing, etc.)

They probably will. Also carrying an idea over from the Engineer should the Soldier be able to carry a deployable machine gun turret?

No, that's too Engineery. Maybe a portable barricade?

I think the Soldier is primarily meant to function as an offensive class, since they've absorbed the Field Ops role from previous games. More grenades = better against camping defenders; ammo resupply = extended operations far from areas you control; shield = protect specific allies who are trying to complete objectives. A machine gun nest is a very defensive thing, and it would also detract from the firepower advantage of being a heavy character.

Maybe but a turret is not a sentry. The soldier would have to get in it and it would be like a minigun. How big would a portable barricade be and how would he carry it around?

In that context you make an excellent point. However the soldier isn't always going to be on the offensive team. He will be on the defending team 2. However his other abilities make him good on attack or defense but he shines on the offense.

I don't think they should have skills that can change the effectivness of core abilities -like if it takes 10 secs. to arm a charge, it should always take 10 sec. - it was set to take that long for a reason, balance. Although, other abilites that don't affect objectives, could be "augmentable." It kind of reminds me of the magnum ammo spec from BC2 - magnum ammo increases the damage bullets do for guns. This is a useless skill to me. If the guns have stats and do a certain amount of damage, they should be that way all the time. If they wanted the guns to be stronger, they should have made them stronger from the start. Because of this skill, practically everyone you fight has it, so it also makes the variety rather dull.

Each team will need to do some offense and some defense, even though one is The Attacking Team and one is The Defending Team. Side objectives will ensure that. Plus, an offensive ability isn't only useful for offense; I'm just convinced that there is a thematic streak of aggression in the Soldier's tools.

In other words, "yes, I agree".

My Grandmother's family came from Florence, so I grew up eating a lot of homemade, fresh Italian foods. Lobster stuffed Ravioli, Pasta sauce and homemade noodles with Rabbit meat (made from my Uncles rabbits), fresh breads and desserts, etc. it kinda spoils you :)
