[BETA] Solstheim Castle: a cover version

Post » Sun Jun 02, 2013 7:08 pm

Have you considered adding some paintings? The picture of the fireplace is a good one - a painting instead of a wall basket would be nice there. I know a couple decent resources, like Celtic Decor, and a few others. A nexus search for 'painting' should pull up plenty. You could also mod those resources to add custom paintings/screenshots. I know that Blary recently released a set of alchemy wall paintings, which could also be changed to show custom content.

Just throwing ideas out there. I really enjoy your work.

Thanks! There are some paintings in one or two places, but I'm trying to use the barest minimum number of external resources that I can get away with. I think I've used two paintings in the mod. I'll take another look when I've finished the walk-in wardrobe that I'm currently working on - the last interior in the main castle. I'll do a walk through the castle and that's the point where I start to swap out things I'm less than happy with. I might also take another pass at the dancehall, see if I can somehow construct some bay windows out of wire grills and the cathedral tileset.

OK, I'm sick, and I actually do decent modding when I'm sick (the feverishness kick-starts my imagination), so I'm doing a little bit of work on this now. I've decided to nix the private study in the master suite because it just is not working (for some reason it is impossible to walk through the hidden door!) and instead I'm going to add another room to the upper floor as a shared area. I've also added an informal breakfast room to the downstairs, between the formal dining hall and the kitchen. I've got a few corrections to make to the interior but broadly I'm at the navmeshing stage. I then have to start the incredibly daunting task of making the exterior, then make all the surrounding buildings, then add all the people ... so still many months' work to go!

I've run into a bit of a hitch with the exterior which might, paradoxically, shave a fair amount of time off the creation of this mod:

The "footprint" is much too large to fully recreate Korana's mod. Assuming that Horker Island is geographically in the same location as Ripplewood Grove, it would extend too far southwards and bump into the Dwemer ruin that wasn't in Bloodmoon's Solstheim.

I'm therefore using the old "sea levels have risen" explanation (hey, it's been 200 years!) to ditch the surrounding village and grounds of the castle, and instead - while keeping the essential shape of Korana's castle - I'm modelling it loosely on the real-life Bodiam Castle in England by having it rise directly out of the water for a moat effect. I'm creating the castle in an interior cell to avoid distractions and then I'll copy-paste the lot onto the water just south of Horker Island (which would formerly have been known as Ripplewood Grove). Then, because I have absolutely no experience of landscape modelling, I'll just lift the seabed up to meet the bottom of the castle walls, so it's not actually floating on the water.

For the castle services (barracks, smith, trader and stables), I'll create a new courtyard in an interior-as-exterior cell, so when you walk through the kitchen to the exit, instead of walking out into a cell that completely surrounds the castle, you'll walk into a courtyard instead with entrances leading off to the various buildings, and a little garden for some greenery.

Since the sea has swallowed the village to the south, the residents now live on a ship moored next to the castle, which hosts a floating tavern and market.

Thanks, but the castle is built (and that design doesn't fit with the architectural style). I just http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1454073-help-cant-copy-paste-into-exterior/ put it into the exterior, since it's currently in an interior-as-exterior cell. Basically, the whole project is stalled now until someone helps me.

Thanks to Expresate, the castle is now in its exterior location and I am altering the height of the seabed to come up and 'meet' the bottom of the castle. After this, I'll build the interior-as-exterior courtyard and the rest of the interiors.

I am excited about this, still!!

Sadly, I have yet to appreciate the screenshots that have been submitted thus far, as photobucket is nothing less of thumbnails. Have you entertained the idea of uploading them to imgur? That way everyone can admire your amazing work. :tops:

... even the blind elderly.

I've only just completed the island it stands on, but I'll jump in and try to get a few pics of the exterior within the next couple of days. I still have to make the castle courtyard and the other interiors (barracks, dungeons, etc) plus the village-on-a-ship.

Yup - just a few hours a week as time allows.

Heheh. Thanks for the compliments. However, I'm puzzled: surely when you click on the thumbnails they expand into full-sized pictures?

:edit: Bad news, I'm afraid - turns out that the area it's in is right on the border, so you hit the 'you can not go this way' message just before you reach the front door! Luckily, there's a fix that each person using this mod will have to do:

Add bBorderRegionsEnabled=0 in the [General] section in Skyrim.ini.

I've http://s43.photobucket.com/user/princess_stomper/library/Solstheim%20Castle%20-%20a%20cover%20version of the exterior.

I realised from my attempts at exterior shots that there's really no way to get a decent image of the outside of the castle, basically due to its size. It's given me the inspiration to try to add a miniature of the castle to a room somewhere. I'd also like a room where you could get a view from the inside of the exterior, so I think I'll have to add a balcony or suchlike. Gaah! This thing keeps getting bigger!

That's a good thing, right?

As far as the shots... I click on the thumbnail, but it only enlarges to twice the size. :sadvaultboy: It doesn't enlarge to full screen like Imgur.

Oh - well, I thought the size (what is it? 800 x 600?) was big enough, but if you want to check out some details, click once on the enlarged pic to make it pop up, and then there's a little magnifying glass icon on the bottom right. Click that and then you get the huuuuge version. Here's a few blown up that way:

I'm afraid this links are the same as the others. There is no mag glass available to me. I guess one must sign up to access that. I'll just wait for it to be uploaded to the Nexus. I'm sure it is quite nice.

Just click each picture at center which will dim the content of the page with another copy of such picture in center of the screen - and mag glass is in right bottom corner there.

I hear what you guys are saying. Clicking an image or a mag icon is rather fundamental. I'm telling you I don't have that option.

Here are the initial http://i.imgur.com/8EX0JJS.png

And http://i.imgur.com/7TH4oUH.png when I click on one of them.

I very much appreciate your diligent efforts to assist the elderly, but it is what it is. I can wait for the release. Well, I can hardly wait but you get what I mean. :D
