solve a dilemma: first time car buyer addition

Post » Thu Nov 13, 2014 7:46 pm

so i got another job, this time at a burger king. sadly it isnt across the street like my last job, its a good three miles from where i live. so im looking at buying a car to travel to and from (probably go offroading every so often also) and me and my dad have finally narrowed it down to three or four cars, all of them pretty much bumper cars but still,i need help choosing which one to get because they all appeal to me a bit. i want to hear your opinions and reasoning behind buying one of these cars. so here goes the cars,

a 2008 jeep commander, with 99,000 miles on it, two wheel drive with a 3.7 liter engine for 9400$ total

a 2007 jeep grand Cherokee with 119,000 miles on it, a four wheel drive with another 3.7 liter engine (think its about 7500$)

and a 2006, stock to hell and back, Mitsubishi outlander with 109,000 miles on it, two wheel drive with a 2.7 liter engine. right around 6500$.

from what little iv learned about cars, even though they all have quite a few miles on them, with the regular servicing they should last at least 250,000 miles, right?

I would scratch the Mitsubishi off the list right away. Not that I have anything against the car, just looks to be an iffy deal. I'm no car expert, but my brother is and I brought the question up to him.

You mentioned off reading right? Well I'm guessing you'll want to customize the vehicle to become more capable for that. You'll have a much easier time with that process with your first two choices rather than the last. Nothing against foreign vehicles, but they're just harder to gather parts for. Your first two options are great for off-roading. Without seeing the vehicle, driving it, personally inspecting it and going only from the information you gave, the 2007 seems like the most reasonable option.

If you want to get a car for other things, that's fine and dandy, but seriously? Driving for 3 miles? I can walk that in like an hour, and riding a bicycle that's an extremely comfortable distance. Burger King is probably going to be paying you minimum wage, or close to it, so why throw so much money away on a car? A bicycle is much cheaper up-front, cheaper to maintain, no insurance (insurance will probably cost you 20% of your paycheck alone), and has no fuel costs.

If you really want autonomous travel, you can get an e-bike kit and then have an electric motor on your bicycle.

In the mean time save the money up and get a nicer car.
