Some complications saving. Need help.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:33 am

The title pretty much says it all. Tried reinstalling the Construction Set already. Couldn't save my mods for some reason. Came up with some error message, and I'm not sure how to rectify the problem. The problems likely due to my lack of experience with the program, but either way, I can't seem to save my work. Any of you guys have any ideas as to what's causing the problem?

There are several possible causes for this. You may be using the wrong version of the CS, your game may not have the latest official patch, you may be using Windows Vista/7 and have Oblivion installed to the default directory (i.e. C\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion), or something completely different. What does the error message say?

It says this:

File 'Test-1.esp' is a master file or is in use.

Please select another file to save to.

Thing is, that's the file I'm working on, and for some reason, it won't let me save it.

There are still outstanding questions from "The Vyper" that you have not answered.
My guess is you have W7 or Vista and installed the game in the default 'program files' folder and your not running the CS as administrator. Or your not setting the 'set as active plugin' when you edit an existing mod.

I'm using Windows XP, actually. Pretty sure it's the Professional one(been a while since I had to check). Not sure on the other stuff you said though, so I'll check that.

Well, I checked both. Neither of those are the problem.:(

I assume you were able to save the file when you first started it? And have subsequently been unable to? Are you setting your test esp as the active file?

Are you setting your test esp as the active file?

The OP replied to my post above with the same question that it did not help.

Since that one is hosed, start a new mod and see if it allows you to save it. And you do know you cannot load more than one ESP's contents?

That's the problem precisely, actually.

Well, I tried loading the main file and my test file. It loads, but didn't save. Perhaps that may be the problem. I'll check.

I tried to just load the file I was workin' on, and it didn't work then either.:( The mod I'm doin' now is a simple one, but I still need to figure out the problem early, since if it's messing up now, it may do so later on, when working on a more complex mod. Better to figure out the issue early.

You never really said if you were clicking the 'Set as Active Plugin' button when you have your mod selected and before you load it.
It should say 'Active File'.

Need to know which version of the CS you are running, version of the game you have, where it is installed, and the exact error message you are getting when trying to save, and failing....... Operating system would be good too....

if you start a NEW esp file, can you save that one? (and then open it up, and save again later?)

Let's see what I can find.....

Computer OS is: Windows XP Professional 2002 version.

For Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, this is the path file: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion

For it, I purchased whatever the latest upgrade was at the time, and that wasn't long ago either. A few months at most.

For the TES Construction set, it's apparently to the same file folder as Oblivion, by the looks of things. Hmmm.... can't seem to find out which version it is. (tried going to Properties for it, and I didn't see it there.)

The game version should be seen on the bottom left of the 'Oblivion game menu' screen.

The CS version can be found on the toolbar by clicking 'Help' and "about".

Throughout the course of this forum, a few things have been learned in regards to my current problem, but no solution has been found. To aid in figuring it out, I'm gonna summarize the thusfar learned details here:

The problem: Was able to save the file when I first started. Was unable to save afterwards.

Known details:

Have set the file as the active file.

Error message says:
File 'Test-1.esp' is a master file or is in use.

Please select another file to save to.

And yet, the file I'm working on is the one I'm trying to save.

Further details:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional 2002 version

Oblivion path file: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion

Construction Set path file: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion

Oblivion version: 1.2.041G

Construction Set version: 1.2.404

With all that knowledge, does anyone here know what the problem is and how to fix it? The mod I'm working on now is a simple one, and thus easily restarted. However, if it messes up this early on, there's a high chance of it messing up again later, so I'd like to learn as soon as possible how to fix this issue should it come up again later.

You haven't esmifyed the file in Wrye Bash have you? If you have WB, might try setting the flag, and then removing it, and see if that makes any difference.

If you have Wrye Bash. Fire it up, find the file you are working on in the mods tab, right click on it, and select "ESMIFY SELF". wait a few seconds, and then right click on the file again, and you should have the option to "ESPIFY SELF". do that. try the CS again. If you get the ESPIFY option on the first attempt, do that...... and then try the CS.

Unfortunately, I don't have Wrye Bash. Where might I download it? I'll try what you said once I get it.
