Some Questions About Reinstalling

Post » Wed Oct 07, 2015 12:44 pm

Hi All

Because of some problems at modding, I have to reinstall my Skyrim and this time I want it to be totally stable and problem-free. So I obtained Skyrim Legendary Edition which includes Dawnguard, Dragonborn, Hearthfire and High Resolution Texture Packs 01-02-03 and it is ver.1.9.32.08. My questions are.....

1. To increase the stability I want to use these programmes....

- Antifreeze (Boris Vorontsov) http://enbdev.com/download_patch_skyrim.htm

- Cell Stabilizer http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/41592/?

- SSME - Skyrim Startup Memory Editor http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50305/?

- SKSE 1.07.03

Do they ALL work together without a problem or do any of them conflict with each other? Should I make choice among them?

2. In my first game I used TES5Edit 3.1.1-25859-3-1-1 to modify master files Update, Dawnguard, Dragonborn and Hearthfire. However after this modification my game became more unstable. Is this programme somehow be harmful? (my game was already unstable before this modification)

Thanks

Don't mod the Skyrim and DLC masters. If you want to make a change do it in a .esp file. Unless you mean you want to clean them. I wouldn't clean them. You shouldnt need to.

TESEdit isn't inherently harmful. It is the potential changes you make in it that can cause problems.

What is your system? WHat kinds of framerates are you getting? How does Vanilla SKyrim (no mods) play? If that is crashing then there could be problems not related to the game at all.

Skyrim should update automatically in Steam to the latest version so you shouldnt have to worry about updates.

About modifying master files, I meant cleaning these files as specified in this video....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw3g_N1jcZQ

My sistem is.....

- P45 mobo

- Intel E8500 @4.00 Ghz

- Ati 6950 1 GB VGA

- 4 GB ram

After the problems I experienced, I checked my system and found that my CPU cooler was not installed properly. I installed it properly and the max temperatures under Orthos stress test reduced by 10-12 C degrees, so maybe it was a factor for crashes.

When I click Skyrim launcher it recommends ultra settings. I play the game with no AA and AF and the other settings are at max. With these settings my fps is generally 55-60 fps, no stutter problem and fps is never lower than 25. However when everything goes smooth it suddenly crashes and crashes often (especially in snowy ares and with snow dragons). The only mod I use is a water visibility improving mod (GreenWaterFix_v2withDawnguard-14007-)

I don't think the Hires DLC will work well on your system. You may want to consider deactivating it. Anyway:

  • Sheson's work (SSME) has been implemented into SKSE since version 1.7.0. You're using the same memory manager -twice. Remove it and add the following lines to your SKSE.ini (if you don't have one, create it in ./Skyrim/Data/SKSE):
[Memory]DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB= 768ScrapHeapSizeMB= 256

These will work.

  • Cell Stabilizer (Stable uGridsToLoad) can be useful, if you're playing with uGrids frequently. If you don't, you may not need it.
  • Boris Vorontov's Antifreeze, has been superseded by ENB's memory manager, long ago. To play without the graphics enhancements part but with the memory manager active, open enblocal.ini and change "UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics" from "false" to "true"
  • I've never had problems with cleaning masters with TES5Edit. Your problems may stem from the fact that you don't seem to have installed the unofficial patches which, among other bugs, also fix crash-prone ones. Pay attention to the load order though:
Skyrim.esmUpdate.esmUnofficial Skyrim Patch.espDawnguard.esmUnofficial Dawnguard Patch.espHearthfires.esmUnofficial Hearthfire Patch.espDragonborn.esmUnofficial Dragonborn Patch.esp[Your other ESM files]HighResTexturePack01.espHighResTexturePack02.espHighResTexturePack03.espUnofficial High Resolution Patch.esp[The rest of your mods]
You can also install Wrye Bash and use it to generate a bashed patch, which in your case, will make the vanilla masters to behave well with each other -contrary to popular belief, they don't always.

Temperatures are possible. How high were they? Those tend to produce blue screens.

I second SKSE and ENB memory manager. I wouldn't play with Ugrids. As suggested, you can try cleaning your masters if you like as well as creating merged and bashed patches.

The issue may also be outside SKyrim. What kind of crashes are you getting?

ANyway try the above stuff first. See what happens.

@Atkara

If I start the game with hi-res texture packs and then deactivate them later, does it create a problem or crash?

Sorry I couldn't understand the Vorontsov part and couldn't find "ENB Memory Manager" on the net. Should I use this antifreeze programme or not?

Thanks for the other recommendations...

@jasper1979

I installed Skyrim Performance Monitor v3_7-6491-3-7 to check the temps but didn't need to use it cause my GPU has one cooler fan and it makes a pretty high noise under full load. While playing Skyrim, GPU wasn't so loudy so I thought it was not under a high work load. I thought the same thing for CPU. Also, general fps rate was around 50-60 and stutters were rare. However the crashes were weird. They were not to the desktop or regular blue screen with error codes. The crashes were GSOD (grey screen of death) and I had to hard reset the PC.

"I second SKSE and ENB memory manager." Sorry, I didn't understand this part.

I don't know why this game have to be so problematic and hard to install. Actually I missed Oblivion and its vivid colors a lot. Plus, it was simpler. If a mod creates problem, just deactivate it and you wouldn't have much of a problem. Offfff....

Other than warning you about the missing plugins (which are dummy esps anyway, existing for the sole purpose of loading the texture packs) the game won't feel a thing -neither your save will.

Ofcourse, since you're deactivating the texture packs, you'll also have to deactivate the Unofficial High Resolution Patch.esp as well -if you have it. Otherwise, the game will quit upon reaching the startup screen.

As for Vorontsov's work, you can find it http://enbdev.com/mod_tesskyrim_v0279.htm (the link should load up properly). This is the latest ENB version, it contains the most recent memory manager code and using it, means you don't use anti-freeze.

@Atkara

OK, I did it all and made the necessary changes in "SkyrimPrefs.ini" file as specified. A few final questions....

1. """Sheson's work (SSME) has been implemented into SKSE since version 1.7.0. You're using the same memory manager -twice. Remove it and add the following lines to your SKSE.ini (if you don't have one, create it in ./Skyrim/Data/SKSE):"""

I created SKSE.ini and put it in ./Skyrim/Data/SKSE. However CellStabilizer.exe file is also here in "plugins" subfolder. Do they somehow conflict, should I prefer one of them and erase the other?

2. """To play without the graphics enhancements part but with the memory manager active, open enblocal.ini and change "UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics" from "false" to "true""""

I installed Vorontsov's latest programme. Considering my PC, should I do this modification or not?

3. In launcher screen graphic adapter is still seen as Ati 6900 series not as ENB. I remember it as ENB... in my first game.

http://i.hizliresim.com/1rnbjp.jpg

Did the Vorontsov's programme kicked-in or not (when I start the game Vorontsov's programme name is seen at the upper-left side of the screen)

Thanks

I'll keep with the numbering, to keep things clear:

1. I don't think Cell Stabilizer will have any problem with SKSE & the included SSME. But having it there, won't really do you any good -unless you've been messing with uGrids settings, which you don't seem to be doing. I'd say take it out.

2. Even if you don't use the highres dlc, keep ENB there, as an extra measure for the occasional memory spike.

3. ENB has come a long way since the anti-freeze days. Nowadays, it uses a host application (enbhost.exe) to offload and process data from the game, instead of the game. It will even use multiple threads, if needed. What you was seeing in the past was an earlier implementation, in the form of a dummy video card. Since you see it in the startup screen, it's working.

Also, since ENB essentially takes over things, it doesn't like ingame AA/AF. It won't have any problems with driver-forced AA though. If you want to enable anisotropy or vsync, do it through enblocal.ini, like below:

[ENGINE]ForceAnisotropicFiltering=trueMaxAnisotropy=16ForceLodBias=falseLodBias=0.0AddDisplaySuperSamplingResolutions=falseEnableVSync=trueVSyncSkipNumFrames=0 [LIMITER]WaitBusyRenderer=trueEnableFPSLimit=true (or false -it depends on you)FPSLimit=60.0

There's one more thing I need to know: Do you run x86 or x64 Windows?

@Atkara

1. I made the changes in SkyrimPrefs.ini that ENBSeries v0.279 wants to be done. They are..

bFloatPointRenderTarget=1

bTreesReceiveShadows=1
bDrawLandShadows=1
bShadowsOnGrass=1

So I guess I should keep CellStabilizer.

2. (UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics" from "false" to "true""). So I should make this change if I deactivate hi-res texture pack. Allright....

Thank you a lot for your help and patience man. I really appreciate it....

Have a nice day :smile:

1. Take out Cell Stabilizer -you don't need it.

2. This is a change you make, whether you use the hi-res texture pack, or not.

Have a nice day too :)
