Some Screenshots

Post » Wed Nov 10, 2010 5:37 pm

I'd agree that the one picture with the house looks a little on the bland side, not bad, although the textures on the rocks could be better, it just doesn't show anything particularly striking.

The forest one is nice, although it doesn't really show anything that we haven't seen before, other than the stream, which wasn't in the previous screenshots showing this forest, and the stream seems to be pretty nicely done in concept, if only the water didn't look like it was from 2006,

The water in that screenshots looks a lot better compared to Oblivion's water.

argg... triple post.
I think i know how these double posts are happening now. You post something, then wait for a reply, refresh but its actually resending the same post.

The roots i see arnt directly from the tree's but poking out of the ground near the waters edge. Look right of the Nirn Root

Ah, yes those are roots. But not roots from the trees. It's "roots" from ... eh, the stone (lol :P). Same as in here: http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/LakeWaterfall_wLegal.jpg

It does, but what would you expect? Oblivion had the worst water ever possible, pretty much. It's hard to do any worse :o

There are a few things that makes me wonder of the water in that screenshot. Where are the reflections? Where is the transparency that shallow water has? Why isn't the sun reflecting in the water?

I really hope the Dagur's faces aren't permanently clenched and twisted in agony like the super mutants in Fallout 3's, it was just awkward to search a dead body that looked furious even though every living thing on earth relaxes all it's muscles when it dies.

it would be awesome! also if they would like m,aybe exhale in relief after taking killing blow

What do you think of draugr pic? Because it is sweet!

Anyone but me think that their arms are a little... Long?
Like, the one on the left with a helmet, look at his left arm (right from our perspective)... That's a long ass arm! /IMO
Oh and would you look at that... Walls that have been carved out into burial mounds... In a cave... Deja vu anyone?

The other two pictures are bloody amazing though.

Screenshot 1: Looks nice although a bit barren, not the best screenshot to show off your game with in my opinion.
Screenshot 2: Looks nice in general, nice atmosphere although the leaves on the trees look a bit bad in my opinion. But I think that won't bother me at all when they are in motion. But like I said, nice picture in general, I can almost smell the forest. :P
Screenshot 3: I love how the Draugr look, but like previously pointed out it is too well lit for a dungeon. I also dislike the plastic shine on all the stone. And the sword looks a bit blunt and made out of plastic, but that could just be me.

For me:

Screenshot 1:

Looks like Fallout 3 to me, especially in the distance. I like how they have used bump maps to really show the rugged terrain though, something they were never good at in previous games. I love that building as it just looks like a lot of time was spent
on it to get it fitting in with the theme. The rocks though at the front need some more rugged bump maps like the terrain I mentioned earlier. The grass looks exactly the same as Oblivion's, I am hoping the grass has physics like Red Dead or L.A Noire not
just static wind animation grass.

Screenshot 2:

I'm not arguing with anything here it looks great, having to create a full frontal forest recently I know it's not easy to get it looking natural. It seems to me like they have used a mesh to make the river look like it is carved out. Generally using terrain tools,
you would not be able to make carvings like that. I hope we don't notice any seams where the mesh meets the terrain.

Screenshot 3:

I couldn't care less about the brightness, as long as it is only like that in a few areas. The Draugr's here look very nice and I can see they are using bump maps again to exacerbate their features. The rocks in the background don't look dirty enough (texture-wise)
so it is making them look a little bit like plastic. I assume that is from the bump map being too shiny though, so if they dial it back a bit and add some extra grainy detail, it would look ace. The marks on them though add a bit of focus and detail, I like that. The blood decal looks
much better than Oblivion's.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

pretty sure the brightness in all three pictures has to do with some low screenshot quality thing on GI's part. notice how none of them are 1280x720, either. maybe they're waiting for Bethesda to release the official versions at full quality?

The first pic reminds me of Rohan which is great. Would like to create my own town based on Meduseld somewhere in The Reach or Eastmarch
The second pic is amazing, can't wait to hunt some deer in those parts.

Based on the size of them, and if they were taken while actually *playing* the game, it could be possible that the HUD elements have been cropped from the bottom and sides.

Edit: Maybe not, the non-direct links in the OP are 1280x720.

Yeah. Pretty much. And is it just me... or do the rocks look ... well, unnatural? I get that kind of feeling. Anybody else that gets that as well?

It may sound silly, but I don't like the "art" of the rocks, haha.

I know what you mean. The way they clump together in lots of these screenshots just looks silly, although it is a step up from Oblivion's unusually shiny rocks that all had those eroded "ripples" on them. Personally I think Bethesda's artists are just obsessed with assigning a specular map to everything. If only they knew where to stop - we could probably all run the game with double performance if they just left the rocks alone. :P

The one of the cabin reminds me of Mount and Blade, ahahh. The second one is very impressive esp. the lightning effects going on where the tree is not covering. The third one, very impressive too.

Have you ever considered that there could be a lit torch somewhere off-screen?

The only thing that REALLY turns me off is the not so great distantLOD. Around 100 meters around the player everything looks great, the textures look as nice as can be expected, theres grass on the ground and so on, but then: Muddy, low-res textures. I realize thats the only way to do this, but Just Cause 2 had a great view distance without looking that blurry.

I'd say I'm 99,99% sure there is a fire behind the player. Something like in: http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/DraugrGroup_wLegal.jpg

That's looking up a hill though... I do agree there should be a bit more in the distance though, maybe some plants or smaller rocks.

Dragonborn 2nd muscle screenshot (like the first, but from a different angle - not officially released)

http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/879/skyrim04.jpg

I'm quite fond of this one - the flowing stream and the misty lighting set a nice ambience we haven't really seen in any of the other dungeon screenshots until now. There's also something distinctly Morrowind about the carved rune pillar on the right - perhaps the lack of baked-in bloom. :P

Not surprisingly all the screens look like slightly updated Fallout 3 (graphically) and slightly updated Oblivion (artistically) -- the autumn forest screen tends to stand out the most. Not too impressive. Graphics are not really of my concern, though, but artistically the looks can get old pretty soon as the "updates" don't seem to be all that heavy despite the "new" engine. Imo.

I like the water (Yes, I am referring to Skyrim, people. :P) in that screenshot.
