Some X64 Problems

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 4:01 pm

I thought of posting this in Hardware & Software but it's kind of mod-related so I think I'm best off here... if not, just move it, no problem with me.

I recently (as in, today) got a brand new computer with a Windows 7 64-bit operating system. However, the OBSE Launcher I was using is not compatible with 64-bit (it just crashes as soon as I run it), so I can't run the TESCS with OBSE as far as I can tell (which I'm sure I can, so this is just my own inexperience).

In addition, I can't run the Vanilla Oblivion Launcher, as it crashes as well, so I can't adjust the game's video settings...

So I'm facing these two problems:
1) Running the TESCS with OBSE on 64-bit.
2) Changing video settings for the game itself while using 64-bit.

Thanks guys!

Well if you can't run oblivion to start with, it doesn't have anything to do with obse, does it?

edit:
I would advise getting that sorted out before even considering obse :P.
=>Post your Dxdiag in the hardware and software issue to start with...

Oblivion itself runs fine. I can run the game and play it by running the obse_loader.exe or Oblivion.exe... however when using OblivionLauncher.exe or the downloaded OBSE Launching software, they crash immediately upon running.

Sounds like inadequate hardware. Bear in mind "New" does not imply "better" in every case. Please post a dxdiag of the machine in question.

If you can run Oblivion fine then I assume it's an installation issue...
You did reinstall it right, you didn't just copy/paste from an old hard drive?

I freshly installed, then installed SI, then patched, THEN copied my Data folder (and a few other files) over as well.

DxDiag: http://pastebin.com/smCjMnFG
DxDiag-64: http://pastebin.com/Z3gv3BTj
Not sure which you need, so there's both.

Thanks!

Did you try to run OBSE on the fresh install before moving your old data folder over? If not that kind of ruins the whole point of a fresh install...

What on earth does the bolded part mean? I'm confused.

If you can start the game by running the OBSE launcher, then OBSE is working fine.

On to more helpful things, perhaps:
  • Where did you install the game?
  • Is UAC enabled?
  • Did you install the game by running the installer as an administrator?

When UAC, Vista and 7 are involved, permissions are often the cause.

I have had this issue before, or at least a similar one.

What is your anti-virus software?

At a guess, he downloaded one of the Oblivion Launcher substitutes that enables OBSE.

Unnecessary, but bizarrely popular.

That's a new one on me. Installing extra software to launch a launcher? Well, to each his own. I'm going to go play my Oblivion game that I added cel shading and edge detection to so it looks like Borderlands. :) (The things people will do!)

No, I'm not really going for the "fresh install" feel, just trying to get it exactly as it was on my old computer transferred to my new computer.

1. C:\Games\Oblivion
2. Yes.
3. Yes.

Haven't gotten to installing any yet. Just using the Windows default stuff (yeah I hate myself for doing that, but it's just temporary).

Showler is correct; it just provides 4 options on launch: Run OB with OBSE, Run TESCS with OBSE, Run OB, Run TESCS. It's just a nice little menu system to select your program from, especially for those of us who don't know how to launch the TESCS with OBSE to start with. ;)

You need to either turn UAC off (NOT advisable) or run Oblivion as administrator (Right click on icon, select properities, select Compatibility Tab, click "run this program as administrator) or (My method) install the program in its own folder eg. C:\Games\Oblivion. The problem is that Oblivion was written before Vista or Windows 7 and as such has no idea of UAC (User Account Control) that prevents unauthorised users i.e Standard Users, from writing into protected folders ie. Program Files(86).

Hope this helps

I'm gonna suspect the launcher software, then.
  • Is the launcher installed to C:/Games also?
  • Was it installed as an administrator?
  • Does it have appropriate permissions over the Oblivion folder and contents?

Just incase, since I didn?t see it mentioned, I?ll ask the obvious:

Did you install the latest Oblivion patch?

OBSE does not work with:
Oblivion 1.2.0.214 This was the official downloadable 1.2 patch. (as of v0017)
Oblivion 1.2.0.410: the Shivering Isles beta patch.
Oblivion 1.2.0.201: the Shivering Isles DVD build.
Oblivion 1.1.0.511 This was the original Oblivion that OBSE supported. (as of v0017)
Oblivion 1.0: the original DVD build of Oblivion.

Weird. It's installed in C:\Games\Oblivion already, but running as an Administrator seemed to fix the default Oblivion launcher. However the downloaded OBSE Launching menu software still crashes upon running. I can work around this, I suppose, except I don't know how to run the TESCS using OBSE without it! :P

@ Skycaptain; Yes I am using the latest patch.

@gothemasticator; (in order of bullets) Yes, Yes, and I think so.

Thanks for the help so far guys, it's great!

Make a shortcut to obse_loader.exe.

Right click the shortcut, choose Properties, modify the line that points to "obse_loader.exe" to point to "obse_loader.exe -editor".

That shortcut will now launch the CS with OBSE enabled.

Wrye Bash also has an option to do this in the bottom menu.

Return to IV - Oblivion
