Somebody Please Help

Post » Wed May 06, 2009 6:03 pm

I have no patience for computers. Everyone is different. I bought Sacrifice, a game from 2000, to play on my XP. I downloaded the Demo two weeks ago and have been playing it fine. But when i put the actual disk into my computer to install it spins for a minute then stops. Then nothing shows up under DVD-RW drive in My Computer. Yet everyother game i have works fine in my computer. And the Sacrifice game has shown up for install in the other 4 computers i've tested it in. I just don't understand why it has to be so friggin complicated. Somebody please help me or point me in the direction towards help.

Have you tried to clean the disc to see if that works? Perhaps the laser for that drive just has a hard time reading it due to the condition of the disc?

I also assume all your drivers are up to date?

As i mentioned. The game i purchased works fine in four other computers. And also that i have about a half dozen games that i tried in my drive that pull up the install wizard fine too.

In case you're having problems getting our email, here is the response we sent to you earlier this week:

It sounds like it could be a bad disc. Even if it's been sitting in the box for a period of time, some discs can still go bad. There is also a very, very small percentage of discs that are manufactured with errors.

Unfortunately, Sacrifice is long out of print and we no longer have any replacement discs.

You might try the following:
* Clean the disc, look for scratches.
* Return the game to the place of purchase for a replacement or refund (depending on their policies).
* Try to install the game on another computer. There is a really, really small chance there is some kind of incompatibility between the disc and your DVD-RW drive.

With the additional information that you've provided, it actually sounds like an incompatibility. The disc is okay, your DVD-RW drive is okay -- they just don't want to play nice together. As Elven6 mentioned, you might try updating your drivers. They can sometimes fix these incompatibilities with the driver.

Right but it could be an issue with the drive itself unable to read the disc for what ever reason, it's making sense in my head but I'm having a hard time writing why. It goes back to your saying that everything is different, certain drives might be able to read certain things better than others. Asides from cleaning the disc and trying, I can't think of anything else that can be done.

Edit: I see Chris has posted while I was writing up this post, in-case you can't get a new copy of the game and none of the solutions work, you can pick up a digital copy from Good Old Games.

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/sacrifice

It's only $5.99 with extras included and is guaranteed to work with new systems by the seller, you can download it as many times as you want on any system and there is no DRM on the games either.

Your drivers are most likely up to date then, did you try to clean the disc? Even if you don't have a cleaner at home, simply using water and some soft tissue paper could help.

If you have four other computers that the disc works with, is it a possibility to install one of those working drives into the target system as a secondary drive? Most computers have an empty expansion slot/bay for another drive.

If you mean physically taking the drive out of one of the other computers, then no. But if there is some other way that wouldn't alter the other computers. They arn't mine so... But i've researched this so much i have found that some people are getting the same problem and are saying to check the DVD region settings to make sure it is set for your location. Well under mine it says none selected..... I don't know how that possible if it was just working a week ago. But when i try to select USA it says, "Unable to update region setting. Please make sure the drive contains a region 1 media and you have administration privilege". Yes i know that you have a LIMITED number of times to change this, and it says 5 changes left because i have never changed it. And the user I'm on is the administrator. So I don't understand why the computer is being so stupid. Other people have gotten this message but havn't found a cure yet.

When you tried to change the region on your drive, did you have a disc that you know works in the drive?

Yea its a Deer Hunter 4 game that has always worked on my computer. And it still said, Region Not Selected. And wouldn't let me change it to region 1. It doesn't make any sense. I just want it fixed so i can play my game. I have asked on countless forums and gotten nothing. I don't understand how every other game works execpt this one. But it works in EVERY OTHER computer. It makes me furious, its an old game so i know my comp can run it.
