Since writing this post my girlfriend has informed me that I merely svck at Skyrim. She says she rarely if ever has problems facing enemies who have the disarm shout. She has explained to me that the key to success involves hiding behind pillars and using objects and tactics to avoid their shouts and defeat them. Truly, I never had as much of a problem with them (which is not to say I never had a problem with them) when playing a mage or an archer. And coincidentally, my girlfriend only ever plays mages and sneaky thief archer types. When fighting them from afar, you have that extra split second to get out of the way.
My character who was having all the trouble was a shield-wielding warrior who needs to fight up close. At this range there's really no way to avoid their shouts. I told her this and she explained to me that you can always tell when they're about to shout, as if I didn't know this. She suggested that when I see they're about to shout, I unequip my weapon using the hotkey and then re-equip it when their shout is finished (again, as if I hadn't already thought of this and tried it with limited success).
The bottom line, I tell her, is that I shouldn't have to go through all this utility and management and methodology during a fight. Some people might enjoy the challenge, but I just like to fight.
Have your GF Try Playing at Level 5 using the mod "Unlevelled SKyrim" trying to get the Horn of Jurgen WIndcaller when most of the Draugr are all Scourges and Deathlords.
I was losing my weapons really quickly, and was forced to do a Benny Hill Routine with each Deathlord that followed me until I was able to slowly (agonizingly slowly) whittle them down to nothing.
AT that level I would get cutscenes of my butt flying around the room when one would hit me with unrelenting force.
