Something is seriously wrong with interior areas graphics

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 3:33 am

Whether it is indoor areas seperated by a loading screen or not, the lighting in those places is completely atrocious. Overbright lights, inacurate lighting, everything seems to float, there are barely any shadows. Hell I've seen indoor areas in the damn old Source engine that were way better done... It's really making it hard for me to enjoy exploring...

This game really needs a better ambient occlusion solution as well as Global Illumination...

I hadn't noticed, interiors look better than any other game they have done in fact the lighting and shadowing appear to be 1st rate to me.

You should probably check your graphics options as there are several choices for the graphics solution in the options menu, and they do make a difference in how the game looks if their anything like prior games.

____________

I do play a heavily modified Skyrim with Realvision ENB maybe you don't know but that is considered to be one of the best graphics solutions for Skyrim and totally does the job of making it look better. I'm mentioning it cause I think Fallout 4 does a great job standing on its own with its light and shadows...Also cause its intense on computer resource consumption.

Interiors look great for me. Mind providing some screenshots of what you're talking about? Almost sounds like you have some kind of lighting bug.

Same. The interiors look amazing. I was just in an apartment building and marveling at the lighting. I actually swung a tin can trap to watch the shadows play all over the walls. It's gorgeous.

Dude the game looks amazing... Honestly they are the best graphics I have seen this generation, inside and out. You might have a bug of some kind. try reinstalling the game. the shadows and lighting look top notch to me...

The lack of shadows is the most jarring. Either everyone, including the dog is a vampire, or no one casts shadows.

I've also noticed that when there are shadows, a lot of them are just way too faded, almost transparent and you can barely notice them...

It seems that They're using photometric lighting, which is a physical-based lighting system that relies on the light source's distance to produce the shadow/brightness ratio...The closer the light source the darker and more crisp the shadow, which explains the subtle shadows. I could be wrong but it looks like, they are indeed using AO/IBL/Radiosity/HDRI effects.

You might be right on this but when compared to other games using the same technique, there is definitely a problem in terms of the brightness ratio. One recent example is Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The nvidia tweak guide mentions how some shadows on ultra are too hard to notice because they are so faded. It said that on high the same shadows that are faded are more darker and noticable. It basically said that it looks better on high, but that you will loose out on some minor shadow detail but nothing major. Its much better explained in the guide.

Sure. I'm leaving work at the moment. Should have some images posted in an hour or so once I get home.

EDIT: Okay, here we go. Sorry, I don't have Dogmeat right now, but I can show my character in a few environments.

I have noticed that not EVERY light source casts shadows. But most of them do in my game.

the only problem I have had were shadows that weirded out for some reason, but every time that was in specific locations and was consistent with those locations but not elsewhere, (IE theres one place where you go in a door and your shadow lookes like it was taken from a Silhouette from an MRI "slice" of you, or the shadow actualy looked like a overexposed Black ink on white)

Kind of like this

http://www.graphics.com/article/black-ink-updated-generative-painting

(last image)

from what I saw with one of the locations with odd or weirded out lighting, when I went digging into it, it looked like the light and shadow effect in that building is intentional as going in or out of any of the doors into that area was deliberately force changing your lighting and shadow effects, and leaving Force reset lighitng and shadow effects to what you had it set on prior, (changing the settings did not solve the problem as the game just ignores your settings in that room), but as to How it was getting thoes effect onscreen I have no freaking clue.

I suspect given the location however its probably an easter egg, given that the locations roughly that of a Art gallery in the late 1950s

We are now talking about shadows? I came from a much earlier video game era so shadows are not something I concern myself with. It seems fine to me.

LateWhiteRabbit, your screens highlight one of the things I'm really having a problem bearing : the fact that the shadows are just not dark enough and too faded ( And also, we can not see any ambient occlusion shadowing on any of the background ) When I get the time to play again, I'll take some screens of my own to try to showcase many of the problems I have with indoor areas ( Not just shadow related )

Really? You think they are too faded? I think they look incredibly accurate to real life. You've got to account for bounce lighting. Looking around my study, (which has a single light source), most of the shadows look the same as in my screenshots. Even objects that are close to the wall have faded interiors. And I have Ambient Occlusions on in the game, though I admit it isn't very pronounced in Fallout 4.

But in real life, under those lighting conditions shown in your screens, the shadows would look darker.

The first two images are not available, and the third: Outdoor Shadow has no shadow on the ground.

For me the lighting looks abismal in interiors.

is way too bright and washed out.
