Something Weird I've Noticed

Post » Fri May 20, 2011 11:10 pm

Okay, look at the guy's left hand in the screenshot.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/viewer.php?mode=article&id=247673

It's been confirmed that he has an equipped spell in that hand. Soo.. Wouldn't that look kinda weird if he had a spell equipped in the right hand as well? He'd sort of look like some demented T-Rex running about with both of his hands up in the air like that. I dunno, kinda bothers me. Thoughts?

He already looks weird enough holding a sword right up to his face

Kinda like how stupid he looks holding his sword in front of him as if it was a hot potato; point being, this is how first person games are, and practicality over aesthetics.

Since spells are not weapons to hold, I'd guess that he's only got his spell hand up when casting, and the rest of the time keeping it down like a normal person.

If you look at the Skyrim gameplay trailer http://www.youtube.com/user/EverythingSkyrim#p/u/5/ckxs1vq6CZQ at 1:43 you can see someone wielding magic with two hands.

1. That is mid-cast. He is in the process of using fireball on that thing, you don't always hold your hands up like that.

2. Equipping a spell in both hands creates a single more powerful spell, with entirely new animations. Not two of the same weaker one.

It seems natural to me. If I had a spell in one hand and a sword in the other, that is how I would have my hands positioned.

It was like that in Morrowind and how else are you going to know what spell you're about to cast?

I think it looks BADASS! :) Remember in Morrowind when we would have both hands un front of us.. Epic times. I think this is a great feature, but of course we should be able to "holster" our hands so they don't pop on the screen 24/7. Also holstering and equing your own hands should be at least 4 or 5 times as fast as it was in Oblivion and have a much smoother animation.

How do you know anyway? When you're not casting, all you can see is your hand.

No it wouldn't.
It looks pretty cool actually.
Maybe just move hand a bit away from the face and that's that.

And you can always unequip your magic/weapons -- as in previous games.

Yeah this is nothing new (or bad in my opinion). Here are some screenshots from Hexen, which also did this with spells.

http://www.svatopluk.com/hexenscn/hexen5.png (The lightning looks much better in motion. Great graphics for its time.)

This boss in the game also does it. You can see the lightning in motion too. Warning about the pixelated corpses on the ground in this one though:

Granted Hexen is a FPS but the spells look like what's going on here.

Is it just me, or do the guy's fingers look ridiculously long? Also, try bending the last joint of your middle finger like shown in the screenshot. I think maybe someone broke it :o

You might want to get that looked after... I can easily bend my fingers like that, and they're just as long as those in the screenshot.

If you're talking about the bend in the end of the index finger, I'm afraid you're the odd one out there. That's not normal to be able to do without conscious effort, unless you also bend the rest of your finger.

If a fireball spell seethes and glows in the hand... can you sneak with that 'equipped'?

Hooray I'm special.(I'm also doublejointed all throughout my hand and wrist, so that might explain things)

.....? I'm pretty sure that it doesn't. It's only glowing in the screenshot because it was taken mid-cast.
