Something I would love to see for the staff enthusiast.

To put it bluntly I love using staves, I don't know why but my mage character on Skyrim has a vast collection of them even if they are pretty much useless compared to what I can cast through my own fingers. What I would love to see if a staff which has no spell linked to it, that you could channel your own spells through and use it as a kind of amplifier to your magic. :lightbulb:

Something along the lines of:
"Channeling Staff"
Amplifies destruction spells by 15% when cast through the staff.

You would still expend your own mana while using the staff, for balance sakes maybe put an additional spell cost onto spells which are amped by the staff or negatives when using it to cast other schools of magic, I just would love to see more uses for staves as my mage really doesn't have the opportunity to use them effectively as it just hinders his levelling progression. The amount of good looking staves in the game compared to how many I can effectively put to use makes me a sad mage, I would gladly welcome back something similar to a quest to craft your own staff like back in Oblivion for the Channeling staff.

Either way this is just the thoughts of myself with no real idea on balance or anything like that, just something I would like to see in maybe an expansion in the future, though it's highly likely it will only ever be a mod.

Hope I didn't waste anyones time with my drool for said sticks of magical explosions, or healing if thats what you fancy!

Yours truly,
A mage who wants to pewpew with staves more. :flamethrower: :flame:

my first attempt at using staves was ironically on a stealth character. i spent the next hour increasing my pitiful destruction skills so that they lasted longer. i had a blast using two staves and although i had to lower the difficulty to expert it was still alot of fun. i like your idea of increasing the school of magic if your using that type of staff though. it would actually give a reason for spellcasters to walk around with a staff equipped, just like wizards do in real life. :)

The only time I ever get to use staves is on characters that are magically inept like my stealth character just like you, which seems silly to me as a staff really seems like a wizards or mages tool which is why I would love to have something like this implemented. :)

Great idea, I'd love to see Bethesda implement this in a DLC, or perhaps a mod.

For some unknown reasons every thing in Skyrim that's Mage-related have been a bit lackluster. :brokencomputer:

Maybe Bethesda thought they did too much to Mage in Oblivion. When compared to Mage, melee and ranged didn't look so bright.
So they've decided to add duel wielding for melee, add bow bashing for ranged, and remove some features of Mage to make the three look more or less equal.

What I really want to see is staff damage increasing with your Enchanting level. My first character was a mage without destruction that relied solely on staffs for damage. Total failure.
The only skill that increases with using a staff is enchanting, when you recharge them with soulgems. It's only fair that this skill increases the staff's power.

Even the idea of having enchanting make staves better would suit me fine, just anything to make using staves a bit more useful to a character who actually uses magic.
It just seems the only thing a staff will do for a mage is stunt his skill, I'd like to see them as more of a tool for mages rather than a walking stick. :liplick:

Cool idea, I definitely like the notion of using staves in such a way. There would definitely need to be a balancing factor though, so not everyone feels like they have to use a staff or suffer being less effective than possible. The increased mana cost I think would work well, the staff add flavor yet the increased cost keeps things more or less balanced. Could be good for those moments when you really need to lay down the magical hurt.

I'm sure there are others that could expand on this idea as well and maybe balance it out even better but I like where you're going with it.

I absolutely love your idea, OP, and would be giddy to see this implemented. I also wouldn't mind having enchanted items slowly recharging like they do in Morrowind so that you wouldn't have to lug around a ton of soul gems just to keep them fed.

Ultimately, though, I'd give up everything about how staves are currently if it meant being able to go back to beating the snot out people with my whammystick.

I didn't notice this thread rise up again, very glad to see others would like this as well! :D

With balance I really wouldn't mind if this was even just for flavour and didn't benefit your spells at all, I just want to be able to use staves more as I really like the look of just about all of them but have very little use out of them as they currently are. :sadvaultboy:
