The game crashs to my desktop just before the game screen would normally load up. So more or less right after I hit new game and the character creation page would come up.

Use the second link in my signature to make sure you reinstall FCOM correctly. This will not be that difficult if you are using BAIN as your installer.
You may have forgotten to rename the MMM.Bsa and the FraNewItems.Bsa, but you also installed some plugins that you do not want to use in an FCOM build, like MMM Gems & Gem Dust, and you may want to install the EVE packages for OOO/MMM/Frans, and the correct EVE esp for an FCOM install.

You do not need the SSSB plugin for the Thieves Den, it has been integrated into the Supplemental Patch.
You want to use the MMM-Cobl available from the third post in the MMM release thread, and drop the FCOM-Cobl.esp.
You want to use the MMM Diverse Runeskulls Loot OOO.esp instead of Exnem Runeskulls and the FCOM-Exnem Runeskulls plugins.
Make sure you are using the 3.7b3p3f version of the MMM Diverse Waterlife plugin.
Your crash could also be caused by selecting an option in the Bashed Patch for a mod that you are not using- The MAO skeleton tweak is one that gets a lot of people when they build thier first Bashed Patch.
