Songs messing with perception?

Post » Fri Mar 28, 2014 6:51 am

So, for the sake of detail, I was listening to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW1NTN5vMyY by Flying Lotus and some of the beats kind of mess with my head, not in a 'this makes me feel sick' way, but it feels like it's pinging one side of my brain then the other then back. It's just a very odd thought and was wondering if anyone might have an answer, because I was curious what this little phenomenon is about, but I can't seem to pin it down with Google.

I think the effect you describe is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panning_(audio). I first discovered this listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VouHPeO4Gls by Pink Floyd. The song you linked to seems to include http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syncopation compounding the effect of panning.

The song called Miserabile Visu by Anberlin messes with my head all the time. It makes me feel like I'm spinning and it's weird. Once I was really concentrated on the song and it made me sick feeling. It's a good song but makes me feel weird.

I can't say I'm feeling it, but the song is annoying. It's like I'm high and I get too focused on the pulsation of my brain matter. Kinda gross. Would not listen to again.

Well, I don't know if you listened through speakers or headphones, but I was listening in earphones.

Put on some headphones, close your eyes, and hit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUDTlvagjJA. You will be delighted and freaked out and, well, just listen. It's not music.

So tingly...

I really like this recording, I've heard it in the past. Binaural recordings are awesome. [censored] 240p, though.

Shoehorning in an unattuned binaural beat into something that's meant to be slightly unsettling can trigger nausea much the same as shoehorning in a personally attuned binaural beat into an ambiance track with a space wallpaper slideshow can make you start trippin' balls.

Indeed.
