Sooo... Dogmeat again?

Not really, so for the VA has only used the name neutral "boy" when adressing the dog, so a naming option can work.

Well, it's not like the protagonist has to refer to the dog by name. It could always be the player character saying "fetch that, boy" without going by whatever you named it.

Regardless, I personally don't care that much, I was probably going to name it Dogmeat anyway had the option to rename been available.

You can likely call him whatever you want. He's just referred to as Dogmeat so they don't just keep saying "the dog" when referring to it.

I hope I get to name the dog. Tradition dictates all animal companions are named Sir Spoot in my book.

And it's never the same dog. Unless you want it to be. Theater of the Mind.

Just like in Bioshock, there is always the Lighthouse and always the man, and always the girl, in Fallout there is always the dog.

I agree, I'd actually like the options to have more than one dog and abandon the human companions.

Speaking of Dogmeat, I wonder if we will be seeing vicious dogs this time round, or possibly even a new variation.

I know we saw the SM dogs already, and they look awesome!

@GK The Seer: Do the coyotes of New Vegas count?

Granted I wouldn't mind seeing more aggressive dogs. Rotweilers, pitbulls.

The rare attack by a vicious yappy Chihuahua that has somehow survived by cowardice and guile...

I couldn't care less what it's called. It's only going to be used for clearing landmines.

Or a Tibetan Mastiff. I can't help it, I'm an animal lover so I'd be happy with a giant raccoon too.

You need a big, powerful dog though, like a canine Fawkes but more fluffy. I mean, I get it with the Alsatians, but what the hell do they think this is?

Call of Duty? :P

But I hope we get to name her/him.

Dogmeat (as everyone calls him ~or her) appears in Junktown. A man named Phil pleads with the PC to get rid of the thing; it's keeping him out of his own house. He says that the owner (fitting the description and accent of Mad Max) had a problem in the casino, and got beat up and killed for it.

The dog will join the PC if the PC dresses the part. It doesn't ever state the dog's name in the game [afaik].
(Not counting http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/dogmeat_zpsqphh5ki7.png.)

In Fallout 2, the way you get Dogmeat is in an hallucinated special encounter out in the wastelands; 'The Cafe of Broken Dreams'. It contains a selection of 4th wall breaking characters and conversations. Dogmeat is there, and is listed by name ~if the PC is wearing the vault suit; else he is listed as a mean dog. The PC has the option to recruit him if wearing the vault suit.

Dogmeat is described as noticing the vault suit, and then wants to come with the PC [again].

*BTW: in that linked screenshot. That is a new PC, first time in Junktown. Dogmeat just recruited, and the dog did all the damage in that fight.

He's not Dogmeat. He's A "Dogmeat" just for them to keep the trope going.

Awww... I was hoping this would be about having dog meat as an edible in the game.

Mom: "Kids! Husband! Time for dinner!"
*kids come running down the stairs, husband comes out of downstairs office. They all gather around the post-apocalyptic dinner table. Mom comes out of kitchen with a covered tray and sets it on the table*
Husband: "Mmmm, smells delicious June!"
*Mom lifts cover on tray*
Wally and Beaver in unison: "Sooo... Dogmeat again?"
*Que laugh track*

I'm not going to be using Dogmeat, anyway, so it is irrelevant to me. I plan on finding Piper ASAP after the prologue. I hope she is as fun as Veronica was... I hope you can have one humanoid and one nonhuman companion, like in NV. That worked very well for me. Wandering the Mojave with ED-E and Veronica was a blast...

Either way, the dogs name reads Dogmeat, and it's just not cute anymore.

As i stated earlier, if it's just a homage to the original game, using Dogmeat again just seems lazy.

But maybe every dog companion Bethesda is going to let us have, in the Fallout games, will simply all be Dogmeat.

Then call it something different. Get a mod to change it. It's not a big deal. Especially since we don't even know if his name is dogmeat in this one. At the moment his name is dog. He is just referred to as dogmeat so they don't keep saying dog this and dog that.

I'd honestly guess that we can either name the dog this time or it just stays dog.

Dogmeat is the best homoage they could do. I hope they always include "Dogmeat". Having a dog alongside you in a post nuclear world just works so well.

Dogmeat (fallout 1) in turn is a homoage to madmax etc which inspired fallout to begin with.
