I'm sorry Bethesda, but the snow looks horrible...

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:00 pm

I try not to complain much about trivialities or matters of pure opinion, but the snow in this game looks horrible to me. I would normally assume that a game taking place in a northern climate would have good looking snow. One of the first towns I ever visited was Morthal, and I thought the textures on their decks were bugged. Was the snow made in MS paint?

Oh, and why don't I leave footprints in it? :sadvaultboy:

Bigger priorities. Like making an awesome RPG instead of a snow simulator.

Speak for yourself, I would rather have a full blown snow simulator.

Yes, but there's a bit of snow on the ground and the tops of all the decks are pure white. It looks like the textures bugged.

I live in a snowy climate and I gotta say the snow looks pretty realistic. I mean IRL it's basically just, well...white. Yeah, if it's sunny, it might sparkle, but it doesn't always sparkle IRL. Looking outside after it snows, everything just looks like a flat, textureless white color. I'm glad they didn't add lots of textures and shadows or whatever to the snow, because that's not how it looks in reality...Only thing is I do wish for footprints in the snow. For that matter, actually sinking into snowdrifts and walking waist-deep in snow would be cool too (pun intended?)

However, the effects of sunlight and shadows on snow in the game doesn't really look quite right in the game. The coloration is off. In real life on a sunny day there's a lot more blue coloring in the snow and shadows. But that would be pretty hard to pull off in a video game I think...

I thought Dawnstar and the northern portions looked fantastic! Hell, I really have not seen any snow that didn't look good.

I didn't exactly say we needed snow physics so I could throw snowballs at the children.

Shame they didn't really accomplish that either.

Ah, alas. I am but a poor college student trying to make his way in the world. Thus tainting it with a filthy console playing fingers.

This.

And imagine the added quest and/or roleplaying possibilities of footprints! You could track people/animals/beasts by their footprints and/or blood, or you could just happen upon some interesting tracks in the middle of nowhere and follow them to see what they lead to.

I have snow just outside my front door right now, I know what it looks like. I got no complaints about the snow in Skyrim. I'm playing the PC version, perhaps it's good there, and not on consoles... I've no idea.

The snow looks really horrible when it falls through buildings to land on you inside them.

That would be awesome! :P

I will bring those munchkins down in an epic snowball fight to the death. I might whisper "fus" behind my throw a few times though, you know, for that extra "umph"

The snow storms look pretty amazing, but snow on the ground is pretty lackluster, especially on the 360. It's pretty much a sheet of computer paper.

I'm a college student as well yet still have the rig in my sig.

PC gaming motivated me while in college to work my butt off to play on the best platform. Life itself is mediocre and tedious. I'd rather let that all go and play the way games are meant to be played without the mediocrity of consoles. But that's just me :D

It's not perfect I guess. They could add quite a bit to the realism of the effect by applying a normal map with a very subtle amount of noise, and nudging the color just one or two points toward blue.

Honestly though I find the appearance less jarring than the SILENCE. Real snow shushs or crunches or creaks, depending what kind of snow it is.
