Uhh the fallout american flag, does not really look like an american flag at all... It is quite different unfurled.

I do not really see this as any sort of issue, even rp wise.

Thats me though.

Just remember that the BoS were formed by deserters from the US Army, which some may consider distasteful as well.

You're right they should have done their duty and helped commit horrific atrocities against civilians.

Yeah, Fallout America is not real life America. Its an imperialist, hyper-reactionary, oligopoly that http://fallout.gamepedia.com/New_Plague, http://fallout.gamepedia.com/FEV, http://fallout.gamepedia.com/Enclave, http://fallout.gamepedia.com/Third_Street_Municipal_building_terminal_entries#Inter-Office_Email, and expects a nuclear war but makes a bunch of survival shelters that are http://fallout.gamepedia.com/Vault#True_purpose. As an American I have no more affinity to it that I assume an Englishman would to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nations_of_Nineteen_Eighty-Four#Oceania.

Look, I'm really not overly reactionary, but I am a bit more prone to speak my mind than some others. The thing to remember is that this is the internet, inhabited by all types, and just from text it can very difficult to tell what's a joke and what's not. The things you posted I have heard many times, and not as a joke. It gets old... :)

Don't take me too seriously though, I'm just an old guy doin what old guys do, eh? That is tickin off the young 'ens and being irascible... Listen, did I tell ya about when I was a kid and had to walk uphill to school both ways? Scarred me for life! :)

I've got a brother in the UK army and I respect army well enough. Having said that, I'm more than happy for them in DLC to create a room with 100 union jacks in and them all be junk.

It's a game, you don't have to get caught up in the meaning of it. One of the factions condones slavery of another race, do you think there's many people who will say "my great grandparents were all slaves so I find this offensive"? Well actually, I'm sure some people would do, but the point is it's a game and people shouldn't get so het up about things represented in a fantasy world.

Of course I did, but I don't see many people on here making that same argument to Bethesda about the Institute - do you? And that was the point, if there's a more contentious issue that people aren't lashing out to Bethesda about then I really feel like a minor quibble over flags is by the by, especially when it is just a game to begin with and as Legion mentioned - with many people forgetting their history a couple of centuries after a thermonuclear war - there's plenty of valid reasons for the flag to be considered junk.

Well not a lore expert at all but I think Canada agreed to get "annexed" in exchange for keeping part of the oil resources. The guy getting executed might not be a soldier per say but a "freedom fighter" of sort.

I guess if we ever come to a point where resources are very scarce, that scenario is not out of the possible as Canada is a resource-rich country. A sort of deal would probably be reached because there's no way we could hold our own alone in a conventional war. Guess we'll have to build nukes and buy fatmens :shifty:

Oh for crying out loud.

There is a time and place for this sort of thing.

Wait, strike that, there is never a time and a place for this sort of thing. It's just over the top nonsense.

Oh trust me, I'm sure someone will get offended over that. They just haven't said anything about it yet.

But yeah, even if the flag of Fallout!America were exactly like the real American flag with an extra star or two, I still wouldn't think it was Bethesda trying to piss on its own country. And even if they were, why couldn't they? Freedom of speech and all that jazz. Just because you're native to a country doesn't mean you're not allowed to make fun of it/critique it in any way.

I mean, isn't that what they're kind of doing anyway what with the mantra being "War...war never changes..." and we're fighting remnants/descendants of the Old World army?

I dunno, maybe we Yanks are just a tad too sensitive about certain things? :P

To be fair though, being offended is a trait shared by many countries. If this were Fallout: UK instead, and we spent our time looting through the remnants of London, with Raiders occupying places like Big Ben, the British Museum of History (sorry, don't know the name), and we had the UK flag in the 'junk' section, there will probably be an equal amount of British folk who would be offended, just like there folks like you who just honestly wouldn't give a damn because it's a fictional universe.

---

lordritcher is also right, while most people in-universe just see it as scrap material, since we're playing a pre-War former soldier, we can decide just how our character will treat that item. While some of my characters simply scrap it, others have stored it in special places, even hung up a US flag in their homes in Sanctuary Hills and Diamond City.

You'd be surprised at how people are easily offended over the most minor thing. While I can understand why it touched a nerve, I don't think emailing Bethesda to release a patch to have it put into something other than 'junk' is the appropriate response.

When you click on the flag in the beginning of the game as a female character she says something like "I'm so proud of him". So, it's fair to assume the flag was given to the hubby for his service.

Don't know what the male character says, but it only takes a minute to find out if you're curious.

You are aware that it's not only Americans playing this game? And, personally, without going into details, since this is frowned upon here, flags should be junk. Even more so, since this is a tribal society, with warring factions. The previous societies dropped the bomb, after all.

I feel extremely humiliated and insulted that the only Scandinavian speaking NPCs are raiders. Scandinavian culture is very deep and interesting and in this game it is reduced to a bunch of thugs. I'm going to take this to the highest place, no wait, no I'm not because I don't care.

There's a reason why people on here don't get upset about the institute. It's not personal, because I doubt very much that any of the people on the forum are synths or even descended from synths. the flag strikes a chord because it IS personal. It's my flag, it's my country, it's my people that are represented by the symbol of that flag. It's the blood spilled beneath that flag by my family, and my friends. I have grandchildren serving in the National Guard right now... and all of that makes it personal if you offer disrespect.

Yes I know it'a a game, and I stated way back at the first of this thread that it's not the American flag, and it's not an issue to sweat about. People get upset about the confederate flag because it's personal. their great-grandad was a slave, or their great-grandad died fighting for the confederacy, either way it's personal. Who can really say their great-grandad was a synth?

I'm sorry, but the only thing I can see when I read this is Randy Marsh going "I thought this was 'Murica".

It's NOT your flag, it's NOT your country. It's a fictional universe based on this one. It's NOT personal.

I'm sure there are many excellent forums on which to discuss the love of one's flag though. Should I google it for you?

And who are you trying to enforce something on the whole gaming population? A company can't take everyone's sensibilities into consideration. It's just the same as with the one wantiing them to change the main story because he's got small children and didn't want to play a parent having lost their only child.

Well, tough. It's a game, and given the games lore, flags are junk.
