soul gems? Don't you mean batteries?

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 6:15 pm

There were many things about Oblivion that annoyed me, and although many part we fixed, I have noticed that again weapon enchantments are rather annoying to have.

You weapon runs out of charge and you have to recharge it with a soul gem....and now that your only choice, you cant even get an expensive NPC to do it...only find soul gems. This means that any character that wants to use an enchanted weapon (aka, all characters) needs to then carry around soul gems, or as I call them 'batteries'.

Seriously, you give us regenerating health, but not regenerating enchantments? what the hell? Why couldn't you go back to the Morrowind style, where they slowly recharged over a number of days, meaning that if you wanted full power constantly you could go the soul gem batteries route, but if you jsut wanted a causal blade you didn't have to worry about it.

This aspect is what put me off enchanted weapons in Oblivion (Until the Duskfang/Dawnfang combo arrived) and its completely put me off enchanted weapons in Skyrim. I want to be out exploring and killing bandits...not searching shops for soul gems and refilling my weapon's enchantments.

PS: Yes I know about the perk in the enchanting tree that refines 5% when you kill a creature....too bad you'd use that amount just ot kill some of the creatures....and half the time you are fighting NPCs anyway. Not to meantion it takes quite a few important perk point to get that perk, so I dont want to do it with every character....despite every character needing enchanted weapons.

I quite like it actually, makes no sense for souls to recharge, you use them they go away. It's only logical. I agree it can be annoying, especially if you aren't somebody that uses soultrap and has a great amount of soulgems with him, but I don't think there is anything you can do about it. Unless you're on PC then you could either cheat or wait for a mod...

I'm playing a Nord warrior who doesn't use enchanted weapons. I'm at level 22 and it's working great for me with a Dwarven Greatsword that I've improved to exquisite.

Wait...are there no mages in Skyrim who can enchant and refill your magic weapons for you? I play a straight up warrior who will never use enchanting, but I'll still need magic weapons to kill certain critters!

Well, that svcks. The dragonbane sword is extremely useful when fighting late-game dragons, and so far I've only been lucky enough to stumble across one greater soul gem that's actually filled.

It'll be even worse with my current playthrough, where I've decided I'll be a plain warrior/werewolf and not use magic at all.. so no soul trap.

You can also use silver weapons, and the base damage of enchanted weapons should still hurt those critters even if the enchantment has worn off, I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong, but thats how it was in oblivion.

I've played the past two games with the soul trap enchantment on my weapon, and I just purchase every soul gem I come across. was planning the same for skyrim. After a bit you end up selling the minor gems, it's pretty good profit.

I like the whole soul gem idea. There should be SOME challenge in using enchanted weapons. It's good you have to do something to keep them charged or it would be overpowered.

Its easy to charge soul gems, i've picked up about 100 lesser ones. They are everywhere! Get a weapon of binding shouldnt be to hard and kill stuff. I did one dungeon and ive got enough charges to last me ages. You dont need to be good in enchanting or anything either. Soul shards also recharge your weapons look out for em.

Not really a problem for me.

I actually like it that way. Its a good money sink and its a way to spend the dozens of gems i find in dungeons.

I don't really mind the soul gems, but I have to admit, other fantasy games have greatly spoiled me with static enchantments. (ones that don't use charges) I'd much rather have a Sword with a flat +3 fire damage that I NEVER need to recharge, than a sword with +10 fire damage I have to recharge every few fights. I do realize there are certain "artifacts" that make this easier if you know what I mean, but I'd still like the option to do a static/permanent enchantment without charges. Maybe a mod someday. :)

You can find filled gems in some stores and in loot. Also, you might be able to find a weapon (again, either in loot or a shop) with Soul Trap on it - just use that to kill weak stuff to keep your looted gems filled, without having to learn enchanting yourself.

Maybe you should get the soul siphon perk under the enchanting tree. Death blows to creatures recharge your weapon.

At least in Oblivion there was the Umbra sword, which came with a soul trap enchantment. Not only was it the best weapon in the game, but when combined with Azura's star you'd never run out of charge.. ever.

I find loads of empty ones, sometimes buy a couple, and i always carry a weapon enchanted with soul trap. I never run out of Gems or charges. Works like a charm for me. I did not spend a single point in enchanting until it was lvl40 and i wanted to pimp out my Ebony set. Put 2 points into the first skill so every enchantment gets 40% better. And i quite like the disenchanting system, if you find a ring with a really nice stat you can get excited twice as much about it :P ( The prospect of having an armor from which each piece regenerates Stamina 18% faster is quite exciting for me ;) )

The only thing i'm wondering about is what kind of Gem i need to trap human souls. I trapped dragons, giants, even mammoths, but never a simple bandit. Always says the 'Soulgem isnt large enough'.

And in what level is a Grand Soul Gem with a Petty Soul different from one containing a Grand Soul? Does this only affect the amount of charges it gives? Because i'm always confused when i used a Grand Soul Gem for a +10 Frost Dmg enchant but only get a total of 15 charges on the weapon...

Ya Im not a big fan of it either simply because if you are running a none mage character, using a spell just to recharge one of your melee weapons just breaks the immersion for me, so I just don't use enchanted weapons. It would be nice if you could simply buy charged gems but thus far I haven't seen any being sold and I never find charged soul gems... so its kind of borked.

Is Azuara's star in Skyrim?

I hated the battery pack soul gem mechanic in Oblivion. I much preferred the Morrowind system where you could use a soul gem for a quick fix if need be, but enchanted items recharged themselves slowly over time anyway. As soon as the CS comes out I'll be modding that in... again.

I'm pretty sure Azura's star is the prize for completing her 'Black star' quest in Skyrim.

I don't see the big deal here. Just go to one of the stores that sells charged gems, buy or steal some, refill weapon. Have a few on you for emergencies.

Recharging slowly over time ... you could simply use that time to get a soul gem instead, what's the problem?

I mean, you can't have everything without any effort, can you?

Saying that enchanting with soul gems is a great idea because that's a good way to use all the soul gems you find is a nice bit of circular logic....but anyway, enchanting has always sort of annoyed me. I rarely did it in Oblivion, and I find myself ignoring it in Skyrim.

If you're a mage it's really easy to have soul gems always full in your inventory. For one, unlike previous games, soul gems are plentiful. They're everywhere. Add onto that the fact that if you have a high rank in the class of magic your enchantment uses the drain is greatly decreased, and I find myself barely ever having to recharge my destruction enchantments. It tells me I am getting 100 hits when I make the enchantment, but it seems to be more than that.

Something tells me your character isn't a magic user.

So regenerating health, magicka and stamina is bad but regenerating enchantments is a must.
