Soul gems losing souls when taken from container (help!)

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:59 pm

All my petty, lessor and common soul gems that I have stored in an end table upstairs in Breezehome lose their souls when I transfer them to my character! (I didn't want to risk trying it with larger soul gems.) I've tried it several times with each and it happens consistently. Also, tried saving and restarting the game. It seems like the gems think they're being dropped. I did a test with a lockbox in the basemant (mod) and it doesn't happen. However, moving them means losing all their souls and I have dozens of each! What can I do? I'm on a PC.

Hmm, are they stacked, and at some point in the past you dropped one from each of the stacks? Kinda a stretch, I know...

If you have mods, it may be a mod issue, maybe even intended so you can wipe gems whenever you want?

I quit and started the game again and when I would transfer blocks of soul gems they retained their souls. However, when I would move a few, like 1-4, they'd lose their souls. Fortunately, I got most transferred to the basemant lock box. My only explanations at this point are the game got some unfilled mixed in with filled, or it was thinking I was dropping the ones where I transferred 4 or less.

The only mod I was running before this started happening (it happened before) was a magic leveling adjustment mod. Since then I've installed a merchant mod (through Steam) and the Breezehome basemant.

This is a known bug. If you take everything from the container at once (the R key on the PC) the soul is preserved, but if you take items individually and you do not have a matching item (gem size, soul size, and price) in your inventory already, the soul is lost.

The way I deal with it is to have a container dedicated to just soul gems and always only use the Take all command when taking my soul gem out. I also save the game before doing the transfer, just in case.

That svcks. I now have all my soul gems in a dedicated container, but using the take all [R] key seems a clumsy and time consuming work-around. I'm not a game designer, but it seems it could be fixed in an update.

Since you mention you're on the PC --> http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5312

This plugin will fix soul gems such that, when they are filled with a correctly-sized soul (e.g. a common soul in a common gem, as opposed to a petty soul in a common gem), the charge will 'stick' from that point, so you can drop it on the ground, or put it in a container, and you don't have to worry about it losing its charge. The charged gems will also stack correctly in your inventory.

The mod contains other useful fixes and changes in how soul gems work but the bugfix aspect is what you're after I suspect. Works great, give it a try.

The only other things I can think of would to be just dropping them and putting them somewhere around the house. The other way is to simply carry them on your person. They don't weigh that much after all.

Dropping soul gems actually empty's them too. Which I find useful when a grand or black soul gem gets filled with anything less.

i got the same issue too. for mine, it only happens to lesser, petty, and common. it kinda of useful when you have a weapon with the enchantment to help you collect souls from the dead things you kill. this just help recycle the soul gems. one way to avoid would be the suggestion mentioned above of moving them in batch or keep them in person.

Thank you for answering this question. I, too, was losing soul gems and wondering what happened to them. Now I will try the dedicated container and take all method. Thanks.

Installed V1 of the mod. Gems still losing their souls when transferred. Do you know if load order would affect it? It's low on the list. Maybe try installing V2?

Worth a try, I've been using v2 along side Smart Souls and I've never had a soul gem loose it's captured soul since. If you still have problems, you'd probably want to post on the mod's Nexus page so the author can see you're having problems. Not sure why it isn't working for you, hope you can get it sorted out.

The container for the gems is in a Breezehome basemant mod. I moved the acquisitive soul gems mod above the Breezehome mod and all seems well. :)
