No sound in Oblivion

So, in my last thread I managed to get Oblivion running with a whole ton of mods. FCOM, texture mods, the works.

Only problem is, now there is no sound. I was able to fix it for a little while by installing new drivers for my sound card but now the problem is back.

I run the steam GOTY edition of Oblivion on Win 7 64bit.

I also have OBSE v0020b3 with Elys USV, FastExit2, NifSE, Pluggy, OSR and Streamline installed.

Along with all this, I have the LAA patch too.

So do you have sound if you load with just Oblivion.esm, i.e. is the issue connected to mods or something else?

I haven't tried that yet but I didn't install any sound mods. I also tried remaking oblivion.ini and it didn't help.

Might be a codec issue. Try (re)installing the K-Lite codec pack.

Or go to http://nightmare2013.brashendeavors.net/ and use his codec reset utility.

Reduce the number of sounds in the Oblivion.ini file from 64 to 32 or lower? Do this through Wrye Bash ini tweaks though.

Seems like a sound card issue. You get normal sounds when not playing Oblivion? Did you turn off the sound/music in the settings - just check that as well...

Yeah, I get normal sound when I play anything else. It's just Oblivion.

Settings are maxed for sound.

Reduce it then to 32. Turn the music off in the ini as well. See if that helps.

Only thing for me to say is sound setting in Win 7. I had sound everywhere else in Windows except some sounds in Oblivion. Played with the speaker configuration (I always use headphones) and that is where my problem was. So if just having vanilla oblivion does not work either it has to be Win7 sound config (speakers).

Nope, didn't work. I set channels to 32 (they were at 128), still nothing.

I should state that while the launcher has sound, everything from the opening logos is mute. The game is not muted either.

Edit: Muting music didn't help either. I looked in the Sound settings and everything looked setup proper.

Are you sure you are using Fast Exit 2 and not Fast Exit 3?
Because Fast Exit 3 mute the sound of Oblivion.
There's no way to get it back (remove the plugin doesn't help) unless you know how to fix the code of the plugin or you uninstall then reinstall Oblivion

I will have to second Forli's inquiry about Fast Exit v3. Your problem was so similar to the one I was having 2 months ago that I am now kind of suspicious about the parallels between the two. I too had lost the sound from only Oblivion on my computer, and I was able to figure out that this could have actually been the result of my implementation of Fast Exit v3 in my game. Unfortunately, I found that out too late for that information to be of any use. You said that when you reinstall your sound drivers, you get sound in Oblivion for a playthrough, maybe two yes? I also found this to be the case for my game at the time, which was pretty baffling to me. Installing the K-Lite codecs did not fix it for me as well. What I ended up doing was reinstalling Oblivion. That however did not fix the issue, and it was only after a reinstallation of Windows 7 that I was able to hear sound in Oblivion again. I was wondering if you could try to uninstall whatever version of Fast Exit you have, reinstall your sound drivers, and play from there to see if that fixes your problem? I never tried that when I lost sound in my game because it was only until after I reinstalled Windows that I found out the Fast Exit v3 could have been the culprit. Aslo, did you have any CTDs whenever you quit the game before you lost sound? Just curious about that as well.

Try removing codecs software, and any other software that uses codecs like Archsoft Totalmedia and others softwares.

Other option is to try the software autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

And post here a print screen of the codecs tab.

I was using Fast Exit 3 but I deleted the DLL. Are you saying it's still in there?

No, I have a Realtek ob-board POS. Might bump up to a ASUS Xonar soon though.

Hmm.... I think I am beginning to see where this will lead... Well, Fast Exit 3 could have been the cause of this dilemma. If you look back in the comments section for its upload page at TESNexus (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22410), you'll see some similar issues other users had posted about it (which is how I found out about the cause of the problem too late.) I think SkyRanger is now recommending that v3 should not be used at all because of the issues that some users had had with it. I never posted a comment about it at the time because I had no idea that version of Fast Exit was capable of muting all the sound from Oblivion, but if I had known this I would have tried to delete the plugin. It looks like you have already done this though.... Do you still not have audio in game? I'll point to Forli's post again, as he states:

He says that removing the plugin does not help. If there is no way to get it back, I guess you could try to send a PM to SkyRanger-1 to see if he can help you with it, though I am not sure how he'll take it. You could also try to reinstall Oblivion and see if that can work to fix the problem as well. I am hoping my case was an abberation, and you won't have to reformat your entire computer like I had to in order to get sound back, as reinstalling the game did nothing for me. I am sorry if I could not be of more help, but all I can offer is my personal experience. Again, try to PM SkyRanger about the problem, as he may be able and willing to help you. Otherwise, try to reinstall the game. Goodspeed.

Would I need to completely wipe the folder or is it just the BSA's that are messed up? I'd really rather not spend a entire day rebuilding my install.

I don't think its just the BSAs that are messed up. While trying to fix the sound for my prior install, I tried to delete the Oblivion - Sounds.BSA and replace it with one I had backed up after updating my codecs proved unsuccessful. That too did not fix the problem for me, but as far as I know that was just for me, so things may turn up differently for you. If you are going to try that, back up the original BSA you have now. Honestly though, I think reinstalling the game completely would be the safest bet as that would prevent any future complications. Before you do anything though, please try to PM SkyRanger on the Nexus, as he may be able to help you with the code, or perhaps provide a fix, or something.

BSA only contain files, not game settings. And it's not a matter of files, but a matter of settings.
The plugin edit the volume setting, not the one you find in the game settings or in the ini, but it's an application setting.
I'm tired to say "setting" !! :confused:

The best solution is fix this bug in the plugin to reverse the change.

SkyRanger was able to sort it all out! I got sound again!

However, now for some reason TES4LOD hardlocks when it gets to Hegathe Valley. A google shows that this is the mod: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15251

Is there a soulution for this? Or should I just not use this mod?

Also apparently I've reached a limit on mods that can be activated. Is there a way to remove the limit?

You have to use the Bashed Patch from Wrye bash: it merge the mods so:
- reduce incompatibility
- reduce the number of loaded mods
- allows you to apply some changes to the game settings without need of mods.
