Sound [censored]

Post » Thu Jan 27, 2011 1:09 am

Headsets have been around in competative gaming for a long time, but thanks to advances in science and technology, almost everybody and their mamma has some sort of headset ;). There's almost no escape from it, no matter what sound you put in the game, it can be sound [censored]d. Now, I'm not exactly sure how bad sound [censored] will be in this game, but is anybody worried about it? I know I can't wait to see how much I can sound [censored] with me Turtle beach x4.1's, but I also understand the other side of the story, the "how the hell does this guy always know I'm here!?!" side. Do you guy's think that sound [censored] will be bad in this game? Or will you be a sneaky devil like me shooting other players with every step they take?

Before jumping into a multiplayer game, you can opt to join a server where headsets are not recognized. Otherwise, if a player somewhere else decides to mic spam, you can mute them.

There's a whole article by the guy in charge of sound, Chris Sweetman, on this subject. Here, check it out.

Maybe if your on the PC, I'm pretty sure the 360 and PS3 won't have servers

I [censored] all the time. Oh, someone is trying to sneak up on me. Turn around and gun them down, and after the match they're like "Are you psychic or something?!"

Well, the minimap will show people who you can hear. If someone runs close enough to you, they will show up on your map unless they are using silent running (where you cant hear them anyway), if someone fires nearby, the sound will put them on your minimap (unless they use a silencer).

So the problem is being avoided by allowing all players to reasonably pinpoint sounds on their minimap.

Yeah, essentially, if you listen you will hear. The amount of work gone into the sound is pretty phenomenal.

consoles will not have servers but you can still pick if you want mics on or off before you join a match, just like freindly fire.

These days I don't think many people will think you're psychic. They'll just think you're a cheapo with an unfair advantage. Hopefully it won't be an issue in Brink, but if it is I hope the silent running ability will be enough to counteract it, at least. I'm already at enough of a disadvantage with my mediocre internet connection, I don't need people magically knowing where I am every time I take a step on top of that. :homestar:

Anyway, yeah, the effort they put into the sounds is indeed phenomenal. Different footsteps based on bodytype, different gun sounds when hip-firing and aiming down sights, randomized bullet sounds when automatic firing, different sounds based on what clothes you're wearing. It's amazing, frankly.

If you aren't using silent running; then whenever you more around without walking, people will know where you are anyway. Thats thanks to the minimap.

I think sound [censored] is a perfectly valid tactic. Only thing is that having a better headset gives an unfair advantage. Got to love a surround system on my PC xD

Most games sounds are better with headset, especially games like BFBC2 and so on. With headset you can hear and locate footsteps and other sounds much better.

I was playing with speakers until a year ago or so and just had some very cheap headset for Skype, Mumble, Ventrilo and Teamspeak.
But since I played Modern Warfare 2 a lot, I eventually got me a headset (just a 2.1 one, though) to be able to sound[censored] a little as well (which majorly improved my KDR).

Nowadays I don't want to miss my headset for gaming because the sound is just soooo much more immersive. But I still use my speakers when listening to loud music.

It is amazing. It will really help you identify who is fighting and with what without even seeing them.

This is completely different. With Turtle Beach X41's they place the game sound in the headset, therefore all the audio is crisp and clear (like the sound of foot steps) and is right next to your ears. Muting a player will do nothing to stop this.

Just like I tell my friends on other games, silencers just take you off the mini map and make you harder to hear, but I still hear you shooting none the less. Gotta love Spectrum 5XBs.......work on 360 and PC........

I have to disagree on the validity of being able to buy something, anything, that gives a substantial advantage over players that don't have the thing. Could just be because I don't have a headset myself, though, and thus have never had the chance to try it personally. :frog:

I don't have a headset but with my surround sound I still "sound [censored]", I love it.

Hmmm, I guess the auto-censor didn't have that one!

As for the topic itself, I've never used headsets very much but then I play on PCs and they're not as prevalent - typing in-game isn't really an option on consoles. Over at my brother-in-laws we tried it a few times but I found it really annoying.

yupp, looks like the bethesda forums have a new curse word lol. ;)

I personally have turtle beach x4.1s and lemme say that every little sound you make points you out. A grenade click, a reload, heck even silencers don't save you from sound [censored]s :)

Theres A LOT of new sounds you'll need to get used to. Also, you'll be tinkering around with the dolby sound for a little. One of the options sounds crisp clear, the other one is loud and echoey
