Sound Volume Issues Thread #1

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 2:44 am

Yes it's Skyrim. I've never ever had trouble with sound in games before on my computer. Got the newest drivers also.

Gstaff emailed me before asking about this problem and asked me to post my sound information of my computer. So they're definitely aware of the problem. I think we just have to wait. 2 months though is a pretty long wait just to get something as fundemental as acceptable sound volume.

Hi, I agree with you.

Have you tried setting it to 5.1 in the windows audio control panel, not Realtek?

There is a guide to doing this in my sig.

Yeah, that was another thing I did early on trying to fix it.
Windows actually doesn't even give me any other option than "Stereo".

Is it possible, or does anyone even know a way, to force Skyrim into outputting it's audio in stereo instead of 5.1?

EDIT: Before anyone asks, I've already updated my drivers to the newest possible version. Just want to go ahead and cover that.

Hi,

I've been reading most of the posts, but I can't find the problem I have.
I'm under XP, with a XFi 5.1 system that usually work great.
I do have low dialog issue, but only when I face NPCs. When I do, the front speaker is very low and I can't hear the dialog. I have to look beside the character to hear what it says in the left front or right front speaker. In thet case ,volume is perfect and I can hear everything clearly
I have to maximize the volume of the front speaker only to hear mumbles. I do have a codec pack installed but the ffdshow icon doesn't appear when the game is on.
any idea what this could be ?

I reply to myself just to let you know I found out that it was for me an hardware issue. My 5.1 system died on oblivion (my system is a bit old, like 15 years old). The center speaker output was weak on oblivion but normal in windows during my first test just enough to let me believe it was the game. Last tests prove me wrong. Now It's a 4.1 :-(

You can increase the volume "fAudioMasterVolume" setting in C:/Users//My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/SkyrimPrefs.ini to 3.0000

That's not working for me either. It's like the sounds don't even exist for me.
Everything from water noises of any kind, to my own footsteps, to animal sounds. Even my magic has no audio when I cast spells. Just not playing at all, or the may be sound is so low I can't hear it even with headphones.
Just about the only audio in the entire game I can hear is the spoken dialogue, the music, and when my character swings her weapon I hear the noises she makes.

Also make sure that "Emulate Surround" is turned off in your Realtek HD control panel. When I turned that on, it made everything extremely quiet. I had to turn it off and reload my SkyrimPrefs.ini file in order to fix it.

For me, my low volume fix involved enabling loudness equalization in the enhancements tab for my audio output.

This fixes Skyrim sound for me as well, but screws over the sound in every other game I've tried.

The problem is a Skyrim code issue. Bethesda need to rectify it.

I would love a patch as well. The volume is okay for me, but the sound quality is very tinny and hollow without being able to switch my speakers to 5.1 mode in the Realtek control panel. So far, AC3Filter does not seem to work on my mac.

Thought I'd just mention I had the exact same problem - the volume was really quiet. And saying that, the volume was really quiet in other things as well. Loudness equalization fixed it for me. For those that don't know (this is on Windows 7 mind you):

- Control Panel > Sound
- Double click the playback device you want.
- To to Enhancements tab.
- Tick Loudness Equalization.

For me it hasn't made the audio terrible and it sound really awesome now. I'm also using headphones 90% of the time when playing which probably makes it sound better (cuts out whitenoise from outside).

as stupid as this may sound, it was exactly my problem when I was having this issue....

If you are using 5.1 or 7.1 surround system speakers.....make sure all the satellite speakers are plugged into the proper jacks.

I felt like a heel when I realized this was my problem, but it definitely was the problem, especially with the "turn 90 degrees from the NPC" thing....

Hi this issue isn't noticed in the 1.4 release note.
I'm afraid...

It's the holy cheat when you have a 2.1 or 5.1 Speakers + Realtek HD integrated on Asus MB like P6T series.

Please, Bethesda, fix that.

Same problem here as well. I must turn volume up to 100% before I start the game to be able to hear the dialog well :(
I use a HP Pavillion dv7 laptop computer with Windows 7 64-bit, and my soundcard is listed as ATI HD Audio.

The volume in Skyrim is just not very high. I have the volume on my computer turned all the way up, and the in-game volume maxed (for sound effects and such, not the music) and it's fairly low, overall. If I have it on maximum it reaches what I consider an acceptable level, while in most other games I find that the maximum volume is too loud. It just seems a bit odd to me to find that maximum volume is at a normal level, and anything less is just too quiet. I also have to make sure my built-in laptop speakers are all the way up before I start Skyrim, because if I start hitting the "raise volume" button while the Skyrim application is running, it won't adjust the speaker levels at all. Skyrim seems to be disabling that application somehow.

Anybody else run into this?

i`d check your pC volume controls. they`re probabaly set at least than 100%. I have no problems with the volume; sometimes I have to turn it down.

Had that problem when my fiance turned down the volume control on our PC. Thought something was wrong with my speakers. Fixed it and am no where near at max volume. So I don't know what to tell you. It's loud enough for me.

Skyrim has low sound issues for a lot of PC players: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&andor_type=and&sid=b511ec1bb636721a431e627515df1559&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BsortKey%5D=date&search_content=both&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5Bforums%5D%5B%5D=180&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BnoPreview%5D=1&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BpCount%5D=&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BpViews%5D=&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BsortKey%5D=date&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BsortDir%5D=0&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BsearchInKey%5D=&search_term=low+sound&search_app=forums&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BsearchInKey%5D=&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BsortKey%5D=date&search_app_filters%5Bforums%5D%5BsortDir%5D=0

It's fine for me. Although I hate how loud some specific things in the game are. For example, the bears are loud as hell, as well as draugr's shouting, and the dialogue for Meridia (everyone else's is fine). At these certain points of the game I usually have to turn it down. At least, that's been my experience.

Edit: Probably disregard this. Didn't know I ended up in the PC subforum somehow, lol. I'm on Xbox 360. Though my complaint about the varying sound-effect volume still stands.

Way to loud for me ..i can only have volume slider(windows) at my normal 60% and volume knob on Speakers (z-5500) on 2 out of 20.

Minimum Specs
Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
Processor: Dual Core 2.0GHz or equivalent processor
2GB System RAM
6GB free HDD Space
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM
DirectX compatible sound card
Internet access for Steam activation

On-board is not, and never will be considered (in my mind) as a true CARD.
