Sovngarde Makes me Uncomfortable

Post » Wed Jan 15, 2014 10:36 pm

Sovngarde makes me uncomfortable considering I am not a Nord. I am Dark Elf.

It's basically heaven for white people. Kind of racist.

Oh and for those sticklers on this sight, notice how I spelled Sovngarde right because clearly I have to spell fictional words right for the Not Even English Nazis before they come to attack me.

Sovngarde has some good music. I blast the volume up and just sit there for hours.

Still an uncomfortable feeling though.

How is it "racist" for the Nords to have their own sleep realm when the Khajiit, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Far_Shores, and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Ancestors_and_the_Dunmer have their own?

Why would a Dunmer feel uncomfortable in Sovengarde, Your Ancestors continued the Necromantic Rituals started by the Godless Dwemer on the God that rules the Hall You must enter.

My Temple following Nord was referred to as a Cannibal in Morrowind. Nords that did resort to Cannibalism were cursed to never enter Sovengarde and walk Nirn forever as a Draugr in Morrowind.

I can understand the impression that a Person new to TES might get, but if You investigate the Lore behind the Games You will learn it is not a reflection of the Real World :tes: .

Lay your uncomfort to rest.

It is not about whiteness, for example Imperials like General Tullius don't go to Sovngarde and Tsun outright states that you have a warm welcome no matter your race or previous afterlife arrangements*cough cough* Sithis Nocturnal *cough cough*

I also think it is silly with all the grammar policing, even with fictional names and concepts I feel that as long as you make yourself understood it is all good.

One of the things I find interesting in Tamriel is that the Redguard are widely seen in a positive light because they are such late arrivals and haven't waged any major wars against everyone else and there is no colourism.

Redguards aren't "black" or African-American or whatever, they are Redguard plain and badass and most people like them.

Try going up there as a Khajiit, who loathes alcohol and is slightly pacifistic..

I meant that on this forum some members around here keep commenting about how I spelled fictional characters names wrong or fictional places wrong. I don't care. As long as it has some likeness and has details people can understand who gives a flying monkey muffin about how I spell something.

I know this.

I was merely making a joke on how many Nords were staring at my Dark Elf and his pointy ears.

In that case, it could be that:

  • Your Dunmer is the first ever non-Nord to ever set foot in Sovngarde.
  • Your Dunmer is the only living individual to have ever set foot in Sovngarde.*
  • Some of the Nords there had never seen a Dunmer in their lives because they had died when your character's people were still Chimer.

M'aiq enjoys Sovngarde. He doesn't understand why it makes you comfortable. M'aiq thinks the Nords thought only Nords would be allowed to enter Sovngarde.

Well, Bretons are "white people" too. Except that they aren't tall and bulky.

But why should it bother you? It's not like your character died and went to Sovngarde. He is a visitor.

It's more or less like venturing into an Oblivion plane.

When people start exclaiming that their is racism in a fictional universe, (I mean legitimately complaining about it) I think it's time to realize what pop culture has done to us.

I assume we start talking about how much of an abhorred tyrant Ulfric is next? :wallbash:

It feels wrong applying racial terms like "white" or "black" to the races in these games. :P

To be fair, there's plenty of racism in Tamriel and that's an undeniable fact. There are also legitimate reasons to dislike it, either as an in-game character or as the player. It's only a problem when people apply real world racism definitions to fictional, and very different from our world, Tamriel.

I don't quite see how the existence of Nord afterlife is racist... It's like saying "races exist, therefore TES is racist". Sovngarde is their culture, their belief, and that's okay. Besides, I think being a true Nord at heart is enough to get you a ticket to Sovngarde, you don't necessarily need Nord blood. That said, I can totally understand why people may be uncomfortable in Sovngarde. It's the same reason why some feel that only Nords are the 'right' race to be a Dragonborn - because the main quest revolves around Nordic history and their iconic ability, the thu'um. Visiting Nord heaven holds more significance for someone who hopes to go there after death. But I'm fine with being just a visitor.

haha well he's a tough old warrior so his skin turned to leather :P

so racial terms like "high" and "dark" being applied to elves is better? Racism is a joke that I laugh at often, stereotypes and all ;)
