Hopefully you would be able to come down someplace relatively safe - but I but Mission Control wouldn't be much help with that.

That's one of the times crickets like to chirp :)

Why wouldn't rats survive? They are very adaptable creatures, just like cockroaches. I'm sure after a nuclear war there would still be plenty of both running around..

Well depending on if you believe Fallout Tactics or not.....but at some point the Space Station MIR was up there...and there was also Presper's BOMB 001....so I guess the astronauts went there...or just maybe they had a shootout with the Cosmonauts on MIR...causing it to crash?

Or so you were told...<_<...>_>

Anyway. Maybe the animals felt a change in the wind, and scurried underground where they were safe, sewers would have been pretty safe from the bombs. And from what we've seen, radiation doesn't affect creatures adversely in comparison to humans, infact their mutations are usually beneficial, often making them more fertile.

In the early years of the space program, space shuttles had manual controls in case all technology failed + the astronauts were all military pilots, so no problem at all.

Hmm so they would have the option of choking to death in orbit in space, or coming back down to earth in the module with nobody outside to come out to the water and open the module for them.

Unless they had a shuttle ofcourse, then the option would be fly down and possibly get ghoulish.

Basically they are screwed.

in the book "World War Z" the astronauts on the International Space Station hijacked supplies from the chinese (or russians or something i read it a while ago so i'm not really sure). That allowed them to stay in space for a lot longer until the zombie infestation was dealt with. That would also let them buy time so they could find a good place on earth to come back to. It could also let the radiation and stuff settle down.

IIRC though, I think it was implied those astronauts eventually themselves got sick due to solar storms/gamma rays... I guess in the Fallout universe though those things would cause you to turn into a ghoul or at least develop some kind of super powers like the Fantastic 4.

The astronauts didnt get sick....they were up there for years, and their muscles shriveled and died from lack of use...

And it takes decades, centuries for radiation to settle down...good luck surviving that on styrofoam ice cream...

It does take years and centuries for all the radiation to die down, but you only have to avoid the area for the first couple months to be "safe." Sure, you're not as safe as you'd be without the radiation, but it's enough that at worst you'll get cancer and die in 30 to 40 years, not turn into a ghoul, or any of the other fast deaths from radiation.

most insects would. there were likely many places not effected by direct nuclear hits where insects could survive. then they just spread out again.

Of course, rats survived. That's how mole rats came to be in the first place. Most likely radiations merged moles and rats and voila a new species. The other rats who survived were the ones living in caves. Cave rats from FO1 especially,

Yeah, nope:

"On the "Pentagon Library Terminal" in the Citadel, it can be discovered that the mole rats in the Capital Wasteland (and possibly the other mutated rats in Fallout 1 and 2) are the result of a government program to develop an invasive organism that could be planted in China, where its aggression and fast breeding would help undermine the Chinese war effort. It is noted that a genetic 'kill switch' was included to help the US Army clean up the rats after the theoretical fall of China. (This may be the mechanism stumbled onto by Moira in the Repellent Stick.) Additionally, it is revealed that the researchers attempted to use FEV to further augment their creation, but dismissed this course of action as the result proved sterile. "

Considering that Vaults have the meanings to survive in defiantly underground (barring equipment failure), why wouldn't a space station have similar water chips and food/clothes dispensers? Maybe that could be a back story for a new FO game. A crew of astronauts living in space are forced to land because of malfunctioning equipment.
