Speaking with Silence Bug

Post » Wed May 23, 2012 10:00 pm

I'm trying to do the Thieves Guild quest 'Speaking With Silence', where you and Mercer are supposed to go into Snow Veil Sanctum to kill Karliah. Anyway, when I get to the door outside of Snow Veil Sanctum, it says it's locked and you need a key. Looking online, at this point Mercer is supposed to open the door so you can go in, but I cannot for the life of me get him to open the door.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to resolve it? I've 'waited' in game, I've run him around, attacked him, yelled shouts at him, hid from him, etc with no luck. I've done multiple quests with him in the meantime, but I'm getting to the point where I don't want him tagging around with me anymore.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I just got really close to the door and eventually, it seemed, he realized it was his cue to open it. Other than that, rebooting your console or loading a previous save may work.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I've tried all of that, other than the previous save thing. My last save before I initiated the quest is a loooong time ago hehe, so I'm not willing to lose all my progress there.

Maybe I'll try getting really close to the door and just let it sit there for a while and see if anything happens.

I can't seem to find a whole lot on the problem unless you've another follower with you. If you have one with you, I'd just dismiss them until after the quest. Another potential fix is using Whirlwind Sprint/Unrelenting Force to push him toward the door, then crouch and sneak away until the "Eye" in the center of your screen closes and marks you hidden.

Hope this works for you, the PS3 fixes are kinda inconclusive so good luck. :D

Thanks, I've tried shouting Unrelenting Force at him, and I've tried hiding from him, but not together, I'll give it a shot tonight.

Still no luck for me on this... Is there a way to get actual support from a Bethesda support person? Or do we just have to hope they read these threads and put fixes in a patch?

Just signed up to the forums because I've just encountered this as well. I've tried everything mentioned here and in other forums. I've sent an email to Bethesda, but I don't expect much back. The worrying thing is though that in the patch notes for 1.5 this quest is not mentioned despite so many threads created over the past few months both here and in other forums.

I've tried the about, but nothing still. I'm stuck with this idiot following me and moaning and apparently having him around breaks the main story line. So yeah, I look forward to all of this.

Just to update, I finally got Mercer to open the door for me. I didn't do anything special to him, so I'm not sure exactly what the trigger was but I'm assuming it was the '30 days' thing because I've just been walking around exploring and doing misc quests for quite a while. I did leave my companion a ways out so she wouldn't be in his path this time, but I've done that plenty in the past also.
