Spear Durability

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 4:38 am

Seriously why do spear have such god-aweful durability. Spear are my favorite weapon ever but it seems like they always get the short end of the stick in games.

Basically I am forced to end up using a weapon with several thousand durability (Dai-Katana, Daedric Hammer, Fang of hyaenekametint, stalhrim mace, etc.) to avoid breaking it in like under 100 hits.
Especially since I end up Playing on max difficulty It takes several hits to kill a single High Ordinator even with Hircines Spear.

And what I really didn't like was when I found out that a dagger (Fang of Haynekhtnamet(spelled it right!)) was better than my Hunters Spear in ever way.

Well, spears do break easily in real life, unlike swords or hammers... You want to think their poor durability has something to do with it. :)

Just take a look at some descriptions of some medieval tourneys, ancient mammoth hunters or so. Their spears were always broken. :P

Spears have a very large Range, which can make battle a lot easier. (attack and run backwards, you'll never get hit)
I guess the lower durability is to keep them from being overpowered as a weapon class.

I would normally agree that it keeps them from being too powerful, but considering their dps (damage per second) isn't that good compared to other weapons (hircines and spear of bitter mercy aren't that bad, but look at how many other weapons are more powerful). If you really wanted to, you could make your own mod (which would be really easy and introduce you to CS if you haven't used it already).

What makes Spears awesome is the attack reach. You can constantly retreat from enemies while attacking them from outside their striking range and it massively cuts down on the chances they get to try to hit you back. Sometimes you can find terrain or scenery to jump up on where you can attack from complete safety. DPS might be low compared to blades and axes but the amount of damage you deal out relative to how much you take is much more in the Spear user's favor.

I dont care about getting hit with my 2000 armor rating and my 2000 HP though.

That may seem extreme but try taking a smack to the face by Mortaag Glacier Were-Wolves to the face.

Well I guess Ill go back to my fang of Hyeanekamenitnnemanemnntemet.

Extremes like that render it all moot. You may as well be using a Fork of Horripulation. Just fortify your Strength to similar proportions and use whatever.

I will point out though that your second sentence totally undercuts what you said and only reinforces what I said. ;)

Expensive ring with CE Bound Spear (1000 durability). When the spear gets damaged, just take the ring off and then put it back on. Boom baby!

Do we need to go over the list of the other 10,000 overpowered enchantments? <_< But either way, that's a pretty good idea.

Au Contraire. A Daedric shield with CE bound (helm, cuirass, gloves, boots and spear), now that would be overpowered.

Especially OP with the one mod (can't remember off the top of my head) that adds it so you can summon all the kinds of armor (full bound armor and weapon set ftw!).

I just carry armorer's hammers around. Pretty simple solution to low durability weapons. I buy a bit of training if my Armorer skill is really low, like 5 or 10.

Spears are sharp points at the end of long, brittle sticks. Regardless of the materials of which they are made they should always logically be less durable than any other form of weapon made from similar mateiral, even Daedric ebony.

I've never used Spear as my main weapon, but it's a fun backup weapon for an Archer or Mage, to keep enemies at a distance, and there ARE one or two with a very high AP in the game, mostly quest rewards for difficult portions of the game.

The main reason spear is such a great weapon class is that it uses endurance as its governing attribute. The ability to get all those multipliers in endurance early in the game makes it alot of easier even if you are sacrificing some damage and stagger in comparison to a warhammer or battle axe. When people talk about balance for this game, realize it should have very little to do with the expansions. 90% of the game is about fighting with steel, iron dwarven etc. items. Not the daedric or artifacts.

I disagree, Spears are much more useful for their long reach. Retreating while jabbing means you don't even need high Endurance because the opponent is getting in a lot less attacks than they would if you were duking it out with them using sword and shield. High Endurance is still a good thing to have, but not the main thing.

So, why should a "knife on the end of a stick" do a lot more damage than a knife in your hands? A few specific items in the game (like the Fang of "whatchamacallit") have absudly high stats. That doesn't mean that you can judge all weapons of that type according to the uniques.

Of course, Spears were short-changed by the developers, there are very few decent ones in the game, which is why "nobody used them", leading to their removal from OB. It's not that they weren't wanted by the players, it's just that decent ones were few and harder to find.

Personally, I favor them as a second weapon for many of my characters. My previous archer used Bow/Spear, my current Mage uses Staff/Spear, and at least one earlier figher used Longsword/Spear.
