Oye, spears...I'll say this: my most complete playthrough of Morrowind ended with me holding the Spear of Bitter Mercy, and I loved that weapon. It was powerful, it was useful, I took down all the game's major players with that thing. I have fond memories of it. And when I found out Skyrim wouldn't have spears...I didn't care. Same as I didn't care when Oblivion didn't have them. They don't add some kind of spectacular gameplay mechanic and they never did, it was just another cool-looking weapon to stab your opponents with. I liked spears when I had them, and if I can't, I'll find something else to disembowel enemies with.
I realize I'm just providing my own opinion, and others obviously feel differently, I just don't personally see what made spears so special or interesting. And again, that comes from an avid user of the things. They were great in Morrowind, but they weren't better than swords or axes or maces and honestly didn't have much to distinguish themselves from those weapons.
