Spears in Dlc, Gameplay DLC

Post » Sat Sep 03, 2011 4:51 am

I don't mean to be rude to the spear enthusiast out there but it was announced back in January that there would be no spears in skyrim and personally I don't care for them since I find them more useless then helpful. I'm sorry to be so negative on a spears but thats just my opinion about them.

This topic is about dlc specifically concerning the inclusion of spears. Its fine if you don't like them, Its fine if other people do.

The reasons that they don't include Spears in TES games is because it takes extra time and people and money to do so. They require a completely different swing animation, grip animation, etc, and that's just not worth it. Spears, being what they are, do not work the same way as an axe or a claymore. They are used very differently. This requires more time, time that bethesda doesn't have.

They are used very differently are the key words, It adds a diverse gameplay style. The time constraints is why this topic is about DLC

I mean by your reasoning, why even play the game at all, why not just imagine playing skyrim.

I just had a vision of some dovahkiin throwing a spear at a dragon.
Then I realized that I did not have enough time for that vision.
Then i had another about a dovahkiin shooting a dragon in the heart with a crossbow.
Then I realized that I did not have enough time for that vision.
Then I had another vision about a dovahkiin.....

See where I'm going. ha
I like spears but they were badly done IMO in Morrowind and in mods so I wouldn't want the Morrowind version or the ones added by mods so it's fine by me.

This whole spear thing is starting to become just as annoying as the werewolf threads...

id say its gone past that... its now at the level of the "i miss repair hammers" threads

yeah, the separate armor sets weren't taken away for any gameplay reason, only so they could make the experience better on consoles.

I would love to have spears it actually really upsets me how they feel they can not include them in the game and still say you can be who ever you want

yeah you can be anyone you want so long as you don't want to be a spearman it's not that absurd to want a spear in a fantasy RPG exspecially one that makes a name off being deep

If you want to run around with a sword there are thousands of games with swords but i want a spear in a elder scrolls games if they won't add them why have argonians they aren't necissary and far less cool without spears

Adding a new weapon type is not something they can do in DLC. It also just doesn't make sense.

That said, I have yet to see a single, logical argument why spears have not or should not have been included. It was a conscious decision on the part of Bethesda, just like the decision to not add horse combat.

Instead, we get marriage, and can cook salmon. Hey Todd, whatever happened to TES being about "the epic rather than the domestic" as you yourself once said? Is your wife cooking salmon more epic than lancing dragons on horseback?

Get back to me on that one, Sport.

A lot of people like them, and played exclusively with spears. I like them, and again, its something that would have been in the original game, but was cut due to time/priority reasons, isn't that the kind of stuff that should be dlc.

No, if I get DLC and it is mainly about being able to use spears, I'll pass, thank you very much.

If you add horse combat, you have to add ways for every enemy to counter that. It's a lot better not to allow it rather than having every creature be able to somehow keep stride with a horse or develop a forced method of shooting something they didn't have before. Get over it.

I'd love to see spears for the sake of a more diverse arsenal. Although, I'd rather have them in the game itself, rather than DLC.

Oye, spears...I'll say this: my most complete playthrough of Morrowind ended with me holding the Spear of Bitter Mercy, and I loved that weapon. It was powerful, it was useful, I took down all the game's major players with that thing. I have fond memories of it. And when I found out Skyrim wouldn't have spears...I didn't care. Same as I didn't care when Oblivion didn't have them. They don't add some kind of spectacular gameplay mechanic and they never did, it was just another cool-looking weapon to stab your opponents with. I liked spears when I had them, and if I can't, I'll find something else to disembowel enemies with.

I realize I'm just providing my own opinion, and others obviously feel differently, I just don't personally see what made spears so special or interesting. And again, that comes from an avid user of the things. They were great in Morrowind, but they weren't better than swords or axes or maces and honestly didn't have much to distinguish themselves from those weapons.

...counter what, exactly? We already can ride horses...and that never prevented NPCs or monsters from attacking us and our mounts. All I want is to be able to unsheath my weapon and hit things that are in range of it. Something that mods were able to do in 30 secs. It's either laziness, or poor design on Bethesda's part. The laggiest, most poorly implemented mounted combat would be better than having to dismount every time you want to fight.

Of course, they could just get rid of horses altogether. And combat. And exploration. They could just churn out Oblivion 2.0 forever. Or they could choose to add content and features not previously seen in the series. I know what choice I would make as a designer.
