Spears, not able to balance? What the hell?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 7:22 am

Tell that to all the dead mammoths.

Spears were not unique to any part of the world and no, you nord did not prefers swords and axes. Spears are a universal thing, but don't tell hollywood.

Uhm you do know that vikings and mammoths didn't live in the same time period right?

And not even in the same region. Mammoths = siberian tundra.

Yeaaa, but the poster you responded to was talking about the nords of the real world aka vikings back in the day, which is what nords are more or less based upon.

Ok, let me break this down for you.

Nords often fought with a spear and shield. Mammoths were killed using spears. Therefore, spears are relevant to the setting of the game.

I know they have been confirmed, but simply because there are mammoths spears doesnt HAVE to be included.
Spears would be cool yes, Bethesda would do them better than the modders yes, if this is such a big deal to you then I'd advise you to use these months untill Skyrim to learn to make 3d modells of spears and learn to animate and all that stuff.

Never understood such fascination and fury surrounding spears... just don't get it.

The part I wonder is.... if spears are so darn important to the game experience, why are there so few spear mods on the Nexus?

That's not the point we were responding to, because that's honestly not what you made it sound like before. He was saying that vikings actually prefered swords and axes, you then said; "tell that to all the dead mammoths", we then pointed out that that doesn't matter because these two things didn't meet.

But thank you for rephrasing it :) and Yea I agree, spears do make sense for skyrim

Animation was my major, I'm pretty busy modelling for the company I work for but I'm sure someone else could do it...

This isn't the problem though, spears were implemented in Oblivion, but it was impossible to do it properly due to the limitations of the construction set. This is one of those things that could possibly not be properly modded in, hence why I am taking issue with it.

I don't recall Bethesda saying it was a balance issue. I really don't. It may be a problem with balance, but it could just as well be another problem entirely. What could that problem be? Ask Bethesda, they're the pros on this stuff.

The problem here is that, let's face it, constantly thrusting with a weapon, and thrusting, and thrusting will get pretty repetitive after a while, and with the more dynamic combat system Bethesda seems to be going for in Skyrim, such repetitive attack animations are likely something Bethesda wants to avoid. This might explain why they'd do non-spear polearms but not spears as they'd have the main advantage of spears, but could allow for more variety in attack animations.

Excellent point I second this.

Historically vikings used spears mostly to throw them from their shieldwalls. Im not saying they werent used, but they're not essential or anything.

Axes were the prefered weapons as everyone had them (for logging etc etc), bows were also commonplace. When swords started making their appearance in this snowy country of mine called Sweden, they became the symbol for a more honourable warrior. In short, swords became status symbols. Then nothing much happened untill we started using guns.

this post is just so wrong on too many levels

Please elaborate... Spears are the most important weapon in our history bar none. The nordic freemen loved them.

Axes were preferred by grunts in large battles, I will admit, but how often do you think that will be happening in this game? We are not playing footsoldiers here. We are slaying dragons, a spear would be the perfect weapon for such a task. I don't know why I seem to be the only person that can understand this?

I'd just like to mention something with regards to this sentence, directed at Shish.

But hey, you're right, dual-wielding is way more important because you know we were all requesting that...

The problem with community feedback is that almost all of it stems from an awareness of issues with the previous game in the series. However, identifying and fixing problems with Oblivion wouldn't give us a sequel; it would gives us TES 4.5. Game developers, if they wish to make truly great games, must go beyond mere improvement. It's about raising the bar; redefining the genre. And believe it or not, as people who don't spend 10 hours a day trying to do this, and who aren't professional game designers, we're not likely to be the ones to come up with such revolutionary suggestions. If a developer were to place the importance of an endeavor on how much support the community had been giving it beforehand, the gaming industry would stagnate.

...

Yeah none of that is right. In fact, if anything, what you said is "lets focus on cramming more stuff in a game without fixing the stuff we got wrong before." This is pretty much everything that is wrong with the industry at the moment.

And you think non-footsoldiers used spears? Spears were mostly used in warfare with group tactics and against cavallry. The warfare the norse people (i.e. vikings) used did not emphasis on anti cavallry or group tactics but warband raiding. They just werent used for much anything other than hunting boars and bears.

And yes, it would be an awesome weapon addition, but not a neccesary one.

Why, why do you think it has to be one or the other? It makes no sense at all. You know it is quite possible to add new features as well as improving on existing features right?

As I said, spears were used for hunting boars and bears. Otherwise you'd use a bow.

Ever tried to chase down a deer with a axe or a spear? I haven't, but Im pretty sure its a lost cause.

People have hunted dear with spears for thousands of years. They are easier to master than bows and much more versatile.

Don't forget that our ancestors used spears to hunt down mammoths ^^
Very suitable for Skyrim I'd say :D

While this is true, they still ought to see the flaw that they've made with the content they intend to keep in the game and fix it. A good example is the level scaling. It was obvious that OB's level scaling was broken so they took time out the fix it(hopefully). Taking out spears could very well be seen as another one of these mistakes. Allthough I never actually used spears in Morrowind, it's apparent that they have a huge following and that taking them out made the game worse for a lot of players. So while I don't mind them focusing on bringing us something new, I still think they should focus on bringing what they know already works.

If you sneak up and throw them yes. We're arguing about spears as melee weapons right?

And the previous post of yours: Ofc you should improve what was wrong in the last game if you implement it in the next one. You could, however, also just change that entire thing if you're making a new game.
