Spears/Not in the Classical Sense

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:43 pm

I didn't really plan to play polearms seeing as my first two characters are probably going to be a Fire Mage and an Assassin (dagger/bow), but I love Halberds/Bardiches/etc. It's more in the look of your character holding a polearm weapon that makes me enjoy fighting with it.

Anyways, I typed a pretty lengthy post, spoiler'd for aforementioned length:

Spoiler
Anyways, I think it should be like polearms in the Mount & Blade series. It was only effective a good distance away, up close it was next to useless as you dealt no damage as you never hit your enemy. If spears are in the game, and with the M&B polearm system in place, I believe they [b]should[/] have a chance to knock your opponent back, if only for the sheer volume of enemies that will engage you in melee range. This will provide a new weapon variety, as well as providing a new weakness to go along with the return of it's strength. As for other polearms, like halberds and bardiches, they could follow this same system, but slashing instead of stabbing. Another thing that could be done is only providing the thrust with the possibility of knockback on hit, so non-spear bladed weapons don't knock aside enemies as well as knocking back.

These are just some ideas I had. I'm hoping for more variety from enemies, not just dragons. This means more from humanoids, undead, and Daedra, as well as seeing more weapon variety in-game. I'm sick of these spear threads as well, but I'm all for adding them in than merely leaving them out. If combat is going to be more brutal and engaging, my mage should encounter enemies that could take advantage of my weaknesses. Animals that jump into range, enemy mages that silence and summon, warriors that sprint and dodge projectiles, heck why not archers and assassins hiding out of plain sight to attack me when I least expect it. It's been a long time since Oblivion, and I'm expecting a somewhat different game, and I'm sure others are as well. Spears should be added in, as well as more weapon types, the more the merrier.

Havent played that game.
But I REALLY enjoyed halberds in Morrowind.
And they looked cool.

Maybe by "not in the traditional sense" he means that you can only get a spear if you're a crossbow weilding, dragon riding, werewolf.

"In a Classical Sense" is a little cryptic of an answer.

I really don't know where to go with that. I don't see what a "Non-Classical" Spear would be. I suppose it could be anything from the lack of the iconic "Lance" style polearm, to calling a certain type of projectile a "Spear", such as a crossbow bolt.

In a classical sense means a thrusting weapon.. a pole with a tip used to stab.
None classical a polearm with various bladed implements, use to slash, hack and bludgeon, with an option to thrust.

I think what he meant is that thrusting is out as a constant attack anim.

Many Mods for oblivion had spear like weapons, they were mostly long shafts with bladed tips.
So as Oblivion had them modded, most likely Skyrim will have the same.

I haven't seen a poll about Halberds, Polearms, Pole-axes, Bardiches, Ballista.
I haven't seen a thread about the answer Todd gave about the question of Spears.
Sure this topic has Spears in it.

That is like me saying there is more than 20 topics about the Dragonborn, the Water, or the Windmill, and just because I dont like it,
I'll jump in, and be useless.

Trolling is against the rules or anything.

Not in the Classical Sense.
Which is really up in the air besides what we've seen in concept art.
Halberds, mainly.

A lance would be neat. That would be awesome if you could impale enemies while horseback riding with a lance. Or a spear. Or your fist.

i have always been a halberd over spear person.. especially in these sorts of games.. a spear you can only really jab (yes you could swing but spears arent really much use like that) however with a halberd or glave, you then have the longer reach jabbing of a spear but with some added "flare"
(couldnt think of good word so i used flare.. deal with it)

Sounds good to me, lol.
In Morrowind, jumping off a hill and Jabbing/Slashing a Guar/Nix-Hound midflight was priceless.

In Morrowind almost every character I made used spears. Upon Starting Oblivion I was heart-broke to see that my spears, Throwing knives, puldrons, among other odds and ends were gone. Sometimes it seems in a game like this Where it promises "Do anything, Be anyone." your choice of toys is a HUGE deal. I thought that would have been something Bethesda would have picked up on by now. Taking choices away from the player is not "streamlining" it's insulting. Then again this is just an old morrowind fan ranting about my favorite game being stepped on.

(whats the emoticon for a sad puppy face? lol)

exactly, now imagine that with the amazing new combat system we've been promised for Skyrim.. pouncing from your vantage point to bring the fury of a halberd into a giant head....

to be swiped midflight and end up being smashed 5 miles

With a physic engine, it should be more enjoyable than in Morrowind.

Yes I do think that the Physics, Fighting, and Overall "look" of the games have improved. I can't really argue that. I simply could not Be immersed in Oblivion as I was in Morrowind.

That being said i have no wish to turn this into an Oblivion VS. Morrowind Round 900,483,894. I only hope that the choices remain there for the player to decide what He/She wants out of the game. this seems to be a great underlying point of the elderscrolls seires. At times it makes sense when i hear the rambelings of people who's first introduction to this great company was Oblivion. They learned a game that was unlike the one i was introduced to... and really loved it. My point is simple, i want to have as many options while playing this game as possible.

So to Bethesda, give us the options and we will make this OUR game.

Pity, would have loved to have had a Spartan-like, phalanx type character wielding a powerful shield and laying fools out with a lance. Oh well, I do love swords...

sooky?
Anyways, on topic, I love spears and I wish they were implemented in "the classic sense" but it won't happen, atleast for now. Also when Todd says they will be implemented but not in "the classic sense", I think he means throwing spears, so on the bright side we get throwing weapons back. :)

Would love to see spears and halberds to be implemented but only if there is a stabbing and jabbing animation as well.
