Spears/Not in the Classical Sense

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:41 pm

sooky?
Anyways, on topic, I love spears and I wish they were implemented in "the classic sense" but it won't happen, atleast for now. Also when Todd says they will be implemented but not in "the classic sense", I think he means throwing spears, so on the bright side we get throwing weapons back. :)

but M'aiq said throwing your weapons at people was useless.. and we must listen to the omnipotent M'aiq

The rest are just long hilted swords and axes and aren't really different from Oblivion 2H swords and Sledgehammes with different skins, which I found really boring

if you're going to go that route... spears are basically just very oversized arrows.

see, now the spear's image is suddenly ruined.

dont put down halberds and polearms, they're more useful than you give them credit for.

Id really like to know whay Todd Howard meant by "the classical sense". Does this mean no literal spears? Halberds and Pikes, what of them?
A halberd would be cool.

i have the impression that spears were used more in rl combat and war than battle axes and other oversized weapons. so i dont see why they shouldnt be in the game.

Also, anyone seen how some chinese spears are used in combat? Mix of stabbing and twirling like a staff.

Spears are awesome weapons

The range of motion in Chinese, and any other eastern martial arts, combat has never been something BGS has ever been interested in incorporating. <_<

Combat it TES is just not sophisticated enough to incorperate real world technique.

I am tired of seeing these posts, but if you insist.... No.

If you don't want spears, at least explain why.

And I'll take any polearm, but I would greatly much prefer normal, stabby-stabby spears.

I voted no. I'm so sick of these threads, I hope to god you never, ever, ever see spears in an Elders Scrolls game again.

And I hope to God that you never, ever, ever see any Elder Scrolls again, and that you're forced to live a lonely, lonely, funless life full of unhappiness.

But, seriously, dude, don't be a jerk. Nobody likes someone who slams other people's opinions down just because they happen to really, really want a particular feature in a game. That's how games get better, because the fans suggest things that they want to developers and hope that they might include them in the next one and make an overall better game.

I've said this once and I'll say it again; why not add as much weapons as possible? Worst case scenario is that nobody uses them.

Dang it I want a spear in a freaking game! Is it really so hard that single player rpgs can't pull it off anymore?!

... Nerd rage done.

Seriously though why can't we just get a classical spear? I would love a spear, spear and shield combo, or even spear and dagger. I just don't understand why we can't get a good old fashioned spear.

Well seeing as Oblivion had no stabbing or thrusting attacks, my guess would be a polearm used for slashing attacks. I'd venture to say it will be a http://www.trueswords.com/images/prod/c/TS-DRANAGINATA22_540.jpg. Guan Yu FTW

Woooo ROTK!

Seriously. I want a spear. Or any other blade attached to a long pole, and I wish to kill things with it.

Just give a polearm weapon a power attack that is a poke. They pull back nice and slow building power, and finally jab. That way spears can't poke people so much out of range that the weapon is over powering...and spear people have their weapon...

Also...this way there won't be so many people upset about not being able to poke...and not so many people upset about seeing over 9000 spear threads.

I think we could balance spears in other ways, other than just removet them and kill their nature.
Low durability, they break often.
When blocked, and shields could deflect them easily, the "recoil" effect is prolonged greatly, which if the spear were deflected from a thrusting motion, it would glide past the user, increasing vulnerability.
Slower.
Maybe, at lower levels, the spear can miss (like accuracy circles for marksman, sure it might be weird, but thats an akward move to make with 1 hand)

Claymores have a long reach too, although not as long, and they are balanced properly.

Would an "untraditional" spear be a javelin, because..... that would be just as cool.

But what about the more durable, smexy trident that all the kids are raving about? I think that should be invincible. (and sharp)

Indeed, but heavier, and thus slower.
Although, what about it getting stuck in armor? Thats balance, "I lost my trident, his heavy ebony armor bent the tips, holding the trident in place, half pierced into the armor."

Maybe the wooden shaft is prone to breaking, which is a serious problem for all spears, and would likely be the case for a trident as well.

I wanna be able to impale someone (With any weapon) and it stay in them, then I run to retrieve it and some bandit grabs it and tries to run away only to a volley of Nordic arrows trying to uphold the law. That would be awesome.....hmmm?....Oh, yeah spears are cool, but Halberds are better.
