Spears/Not in the Classical Sense

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 1:14 am

When I listened to Todds podcast with gameinformer, they asked him if there were going to be spears.
He said there weren't going to be any in the classical sense.
Which could mean Halberds, Pikes, Polearms, etc.
I could settle for a Halberd. How bout you?

No! Only regular spears will do. Adding polearms like halberds, but no traditional spears is stuuupid!!!

Todd is too odd...

As long as you use them like spears instead of swords on a stick (main thing that bothers me with oblivion spear mods)
Even CoD WaW had good bayonet fighting and all it did was heavily increase aim assist after you stabbed someone to make it look as if your bayonet was stuck to them and added some gore with the guy falling over.

They may mean throwing spears or short spears when they said not classical though

EDIT: as far as the poll goes, halberds and stuff aren't really my thing. Spears would be the only sharp sticks I would use. The rest are just long hilted swords and axes and aren't really different from Oblivion 2H swords and Sledgehammes with different skins, which I found really boring

Voted don't care, they're not really my thing I like bows and swords :toughninja:
But I wouldn't mind them simply for the variety of weapons for npcs to use.

I voted YES. I think they're cool. and I don't imagine they'd be *that hard to implement. I mean they're basically just a VERY long hilted, two-handed blade.
More variety. Me likey.

Definitely like a spear, like in Morrowind, you could Jab, and in Oblivion, with a Staff or the Wabbajack, it did a twirl upon weilding it, :)

Definitely Like A Spear, but I like the idea of a short spear or throwing spear.

We already know polearms are more or less confirmed as they were shown in the concept art. We also know spears will not make an appearance as having the inherent ability to stab would give spears and unfair advantage over all other melee weapons. Who wants to poke people anyway?

And what ManCowFish said too.

I'd love to have spears too, but It won't break it for me. :D
I like the having separate dynamics in fighting. Like when fighting against a spear wielder you want to get in tight to take away his reach, and when you have a spear you try to keep your opponent at distance to take advantage of your reach and your opponents deficit in range.
I like... dynamics. haha, but even without that I love everything I've heard and seen from what they're doing with Skyrim. I can't wait.

The poor spear...

If its a throwing weapon, I slap M'aiq in the face.
Some people wish to throw their weapons. That seems foolish to M'aiq. If you hold your weapon, you only need one

How dare he go back on his word?!

Seriously, why would we get something based on a spear, such as a polearm or halberd, but not a basic spear.
I think bethesda is just making the spear community roll over in their grave...

As a concept artist (... enthusiast, for the time being)... I know that concept art doesn't always make it in the game. But I like the idea, spear could take the same path as the archery, it's less agile and good/powerful at range, but not so hot up close. If somehow they implemented that into the spear's combat dynamic, making it difficult to land a thrust attack when up close and personal.

I don't know if you've ever sparred with someone with a spear vs. sword; spears are intimidating. You *want to have equal range and reach, but you have to figure out how to adapt to the difference in combat to be able to fight (well) against it. I like it. Makes encounters more diverse, and interesting. But it's good either way. I'll be uber happy when this comes out... even if there are no weapons at all. :D

Yep, the more weapons the better, though I would prefer a spear. It would be easy to make a spear, all you need to do is give it longer reach, push-back, and a stabbing animation.

Well, to create my envisioned hoplite-ish character, I'd ideally need a plain old spear. But I'll take the next best thing in a second, if halberds and such are included.

The throwing spears in New Vegas were awesome, i hope we can get spears to either stab with or throw, then quickly draw a sword and retrieve the spear when the enemy is dead.

"In a Classical Sense" is a little cryptic of an answer.

I really don't know where to go with that. I don't see what a "Non-Classical" Spear would be. I suppose it could be anything from the lack of the iconic "Lance" style polearm, to calling a certain type of projectile a "Spear", such as a crossbow bolt.

Just imagine the coolness factor of riding around, hunting dragons, throwing tridents at dragons and trying to skewer them.... Awwww Yah, that would be so cool.

Its a long shot, but Id like to hope for a Ballista at major cities to defend against Dragons.
Imagine hopping on one of those, shooting 6 foot SPEARS(lol) at and skewering dragons. :)

Come to think of it, with open cities, how would the cities defend against giants or dragons....
Ballista...For you we pray.
OR Guards are now Individually prowess as Batman.
Which I could accept.

I didn't really plan to play polearms seeing as my first two characters are probably going to be a Fire Mage and an Assassin (dagger/bow), but I love Halberds/Bardiches/etc. It's more in the look of your character holding a polearm weapon that makes me enjoy fighting with it.

Anyways, I typed a pretty lengthy post, spoiler'd for aforementioned length:

Spoiler
Anyways, I think it should be like polearms in the Mount & Blade series. It was only effective a good distance away, up close it was next to useless as you dealt no damage as you never hit your enemy. If spears are in the game, and with the M&B polearm system in place, I believe they [b]should[/] have a chance to knock your opponent back, if only for the sheer volume of enemies that will engage you in melee range. This will provide a new weapon variety, as well as providing a new weakness to go along with the return of it's strength. As for other polearms, like halberds and bardiches, they could follow this same system, but slashing instead of stabbing. Another thing that could be done is only providing the thrust with the possibility of knockback on hit, so non-spear bladed weapons don't knock aside enemies as well as knocking back.

These are just some ideas I had. I'm hoping for more variety from enemies, not just dragons. This means more from humanoids, undead, and Daedra, as well as seeing more weapon variety in-game. I'm sick of these spear threads as well, but I'm all for adding them in than merely leaving them out. If combat is going to be more brutal and engaging, my mage should encounter enemies that could take advantage of my weaknesses. Animals that jump into range, enemy mages that silence and summon, warriors that sprint and dodge projectiles, heck why not archers and assassins hiding out of plain sight to attack me when I least expect it. It's been a long time since Oblivion, and I'm expecting a somewhat different game, and I'm sure others are as well. Spears should be added in, as well as more weapon types, the more the merrier.
