Spears!

Post » Sun Feb 28, 2010 4:48 am

Disregarding the whole issue of throwing your spear, how would you like spears to be made?

In TESIII, spears were 2-handed weapons only. But, as we know from history (of spear usage on planet Earth), spears were also used as 1-handed weapons in combo with a shield (yay for hoplites!).

The other weapon skills have 1h and 2h varieties for their weapons:
Axe and Battleaxe
Mace and Warhammer
Longsword and Claymore

If spears make a comeback in TESV, do you want them to be 1h weapons, 2h weapons, or come in both 1h and 2h styles? Or should there not be spears (and other pole-arms) in TESV at all?

FOR DISCUSSION:
Also, what do you think of being able to wield 1h weapons with both hands (as in, without a shield) to add a damage boost? In other words, you grip your longsword with both hands and do extra damage (but not as much as a claymore, of course). What do you think? Should it be something that the player toggles, or should it automatically happen if you don't have a shield in your off-hand?

You could also do this with, say, shortswords or daggers to deliver even stabbier blows (useful for assassinations, yeah?).

EDIT: THIS IS NOT DUAL WEILDING! This is holding your sword with BOTH hands, as opposed to with only one hand!

If anything thing, small spears should be one-handed while Pikes and Polearms would be two-handed.

And, please, FSM, grant us the gift of Spears/Polearms, once more.

I'd like both 1 hand and 2 hand, and I REALLY want spears back, if they bring them back they will definitely be one of my major skills for sure.

I honestly cant imagine TES:V without dual-wielding abilities.

Aye for both. I go for spear+shield whenever I can just because it looks awesome. Unfortunately the only game that I've played where I could do that was AD&D =(

I'd love to see one handed spears being used with a shield, but I think it gets into murky waters when you have one handed spears being used with other things. The fighting style would be rather weird if you used an axe in one hand and a spear in the other, and it would be difficult to animate your character. What if you had throwing spears in one hand and throwing knives in the other, and threw them at the same time? Your character would look ridiculous.

Weren't spears wielded one-handed with a shield primarily in the Phalanx formation? Which means it's only effective if someone is to either side of you also wielding a spear and a shield. As a single person fighting with a spear, the primary goal is to keep your opponent far enough away from you that you don't need a shield? In the end I guess it doesn't matter to me, as I will play the game the way I want to play it and everyone else can play it the way they want to play it.

One handed and two-handed, yes.

And if they introduce the idiotic dual-wielding idea, please put a limitation to keep players from dual-wielding one-handed spears.

I wasn't talking about dual wielding. This is grabbing your sword/weapon with both of your hands, as opposed to holding it only in one hand and not doing anything with your left hand.

I'd love it if they brought back pole-arms and spear type weapons. (They were in MW, yeah? It's been years since I've played that game....)

Those are always my favorite weapons in any game where they're an option, hands down.

You need the other hand to grab potions to drink and add poson to your blade.

But yes I would like a nice toggable option like that, and wether it changes attack style damage/speed/accracy it would be even better.

Would be cool if sufficient strength allowed you to wield some/all 2 Handed Spears with one hand.

Not for duel wielding but so it could be used with a shield. Plus that would just be kind of cool as long as it were explained at some point. Simple red text indicating you are not strong enough to 1 Hand it.

Killing some monstrous Nord who is using some Spear of Unnecessary Carnage, you finish him off and go to pick up the weapon only to find that it weighs a ton and you're like 26 points of Strength away from 1 Handing it.

The weight inherent in carrying such a big spear and a shield would help keep 1 Handing a regularly 2 Handed Spear from being too overpowered...assuming they haven't given in to casual-ness and crippled encumbrance.

I would like to see spears in the game, yes. I really don't see why anyone would vote for no, seeing as the addition of spears would allow for more variety of weapons in the game, since it adds a new weapon type. Now, some players might not have a terribly strong desire to see spears in the game, but at most, I'd think you just wouldn't care. And I would say having both two handed and one handed weapons for spears would be a good idea, after all, other weapons get this kind of variety, so why not spears? Like with other weapons, I'd say longer, larger spears should be two handed weapons while shorter ones should be one handed.

As to holding one handed weapons in two hands when you're not using a shield, I could see this being a good idea, even if it was just a cosmetic animation that did not change anything, I would say that it should not apply to all one handed weapons, because let's face it, using a dagger like a claymore would look really awkward, it should generally apply to weapons that can feasibly be used in one hand but you could still see being practical when used with both hands, like long swords. And if this did add a damage bonus, it might actually give players a reason to consider not using a shield when using one handed weapons. In Morrowind and Oblivion, aside from unarmored characters, none of my characters have any real reason to not use a shield if they can.

Holding a one handed weapon in two hands might have an additional advantage too, it could allow for new animations (more grandiose spinning blows and a Japanese Samurai style of holding the blade when idle).

That'd be pretty sweet I think. Would add a new option between 1 Hand and 1 Hand w/ Shield.

One word: Arrows

Which is exactly what the phalanx formation was designed to defeat. And it's only effective if you can share shield coverage with your compatriots. But if I have a longbow and you have a spear, and you're close enough for me to fire at you accurately, then I better be darn good, because I'm only likely to get one shot off before you drive that spear into my gut. Because just hitting you with an arrow isn't likely to stop your charge. I'd have to put it into your brain pan to make sure you didn't get any closer--and for a moving target, not that easy. In the middle ages, an entire compliment of longbows could be easily dispersed by a few mounted knights, if they could get close enough to charge.

naginatas/glaives
javalins
halberds
light spears
heavy spears

thats a lot more diverse than blunt and blade skills (unless short/long blade is condensed again, that would make blade the most diverse skill
